Happy AFI Saturday!

Sunrise (1927), ranked #82 on AFI's list, is seriously impressive for being so old! The actors totally nailed their roles, and whoever was behind the camera really knew what they were doing - they came up with some pretty cool shots that were way ahead of their time. I loved the transitions and the superimposed layered shots. Sure, I had some small issues with how some of the characters' stories played out, but the overall plot still works well. There are so many great scenes throughout, and I bet this movie was a huge deal when it hit theatres back in 1927...that movie magic kinda stuff!

Well said Ames…I too was impressed by just how fast the medium was advancing considering it was still in its infancy in 27. Since special effects were also in their infancy, I always admired older films reliance on story and character development than they do today . And the acting seems better then in many I watch.. weird….🤔

This is an excellent commentary on Sunrise recorded by John Bailey, a cinematographer (Groundhog Day, In the Line of Fire) and expert on early filmmaking techniques. Fantastic thematic and technical analysis, lots of interesting stuff. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0rfokM7v6A

I usually enjoy your reactions very much, Ames. But I do WISH you had checked your 21st-century cynicism before you began watching Sunrise.

I’m not going to apologize- that’s the Canadian thing to do! LOL but, I think is clear I really appreciated this movie, even if I joked around a bit about some of the plot. At the end of the day, the story of redemption and forgiveness really stood out to me…it was beautifully told and wonderfully crafted, especially considering it’s from 1927! Those actors were incredible!

This was a first time watch for me and I really enjoyed it. I am glad we are getting more silent movies on the channel. I agreed when you said the storytelling is so patient. The set dec and technical aspects of how this film was made are still impressive almost a hundred years later.
