weee!!!! Excited to share this amazing movie!

🚨Spoilers Below🚨

So I selfishly put this on the poll cause I wanted to watch it thinking I may have seen parts of it as a kid but I HAD NOT! I am soooooooo excited I followed my gut! I have seen a few Zemeckis films but this one is prob one of my faves next to Who Framed Roger Rabbit. This is the subject matter I love! Poses sooo many questions I think about daily.

I got philosophical and forgot to talk about how Jodie Foster was so incredible in this film especially the end in the court room scene. She’s just such a wonderful person to watch. Loved all the famous people in this one! James Wood was a perfect “Villain”. I didn’t even know Matthew McConaughey was in this but for sure reminded me of Interstellar and Arrival. This film must have inspired those.

Well! Enjoy!!!!

Amazing movie. A fave for sure. Good story, production, well acted, music, etc. And I also love the subject matter. Science, looking to the sky, big life questions. Gonna enjoy this watching along!

It has one of the coolest shots I've ever seen pulled off in the slo-mo shot of Ellie as a little girl running up the stairs, down the hall and into the medicine cabinet to get her fathers medication. GENIUS! I actually became friends with William Fichtner while he was in town shooting THE LONE RANGER here in 2013. There was an incident at a local restaurant where he was recognized by an older lady who came up to him to express her delight at meeting him as CONTACT was her fave film and was shocked to find out he wasn't really blind!

Can't wait! Saw back in late 90s. Dont remember much and definitely wasn't as into "aliens" then as I am now. LFG

djKENTO

maybe the last truly great film Robert Zemeckis made...

I can't wait to see this reaction after work, Ames! Contact is one of my favorites! It's always humbling to be reminded once again how tiny we are in a vast and glorious universe!

This movie is one of the all time greats for anyone interested in the future of mankind. Only Carl Sagan could have imagined something like this, although... and this may be blasphemy... having read the book I think the movie is far superior. Watching Ellie's journey, seeing her and Palmer basically swap positions, the philosophical questions it raises, it's the total package. I love seeing others discover how amazing this movie is. It will tear your heart to shreds in the best way possible, while simultaneously blowing your mind. The cast is stacked and phenomenal (especially John Hurt as Hadden), the sfx and cinematography are stunning, and you end on a hard-won yet hopeful note. I loved your reaction, Ames. 10/10, no notes. :)

I love Bobby Z! (This, BTTF & Roger Rabbit are my top 3 of his) This movie introduced me to Carl Sagan and his books. There was certainly a shift in my perspective and thinking of science after this film came out. Can’t wait to watch it again and hear your thoughts!

I prefer Contact over Interstellar in the Matthew McConaughey space exploration movie that makes people cry and also where the alien/higher intelligence has grand plans that are outside the scope of human intelligence genre.

Good movie. If anybody's interested, I highly recommend the book, and really anything Carl Sagan did.

WOW! That's a great movie! I watched it for the first time as a watch-along. I've had a crush on Jodie Foster forever! She is such a great actress. The first time I remember seeing her was on Kung Fu in 1973. She was so young then. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddEpPgopeRE She was also on Saturday Night Live in 1976. Just watch her expressions. She is a born actress. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ny837E635D0 I was surprised to see Rob Lowe, one of my favorite actors. Have you seen The Stand, a mini series based on the book by Steven King? He was wonderful. He played a deaf-mute the whole time (except for one small speaking part). That had to be very hard to do. I had an uncle and aunt that were deaf and I know what a hard life that can be. But here's a brief clip of Rob: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2TiXb8OQvWI I recognized William Fichtner as well. He guest starred on the TV series The West Wing (I think it's one of the best shows that's ever been on TV). Unfortunately, Rob Lowe had already left the series, or they could have starred together again. But he is also a great actor. You really need to see the whole episode (S5 E 17, The Supremes) to appreciate how Fichtner fit in the scheme of things. They all hated him, but he got on the Supreme Court anyway. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SyCwH0BFXck I didn't realize this was a Sagan thing. He was a pretty smart cookie. And it looks like Jodie watched and studied a lot of his ideas. She portrayed them pretty good. The whole cast was excellent. The guys that played assholes did a great job of it. I'm like you as far as the excellent filming, scenery, and effects. For it's time, it was great. It may not be as prominent in Canada, but it's so typical of our "wonderful" government to take care of us by moving in and deciding what we need to know. What a gong show, eh? PS: The wormhole looked a whole lot like the one used on Stargate SG-1 (another of my favorite sci-fi series). Filmed in Canada, too! ;) PPS: I hate to admit it, but this is the first time I've seen Matthew McConaughey. I need to check out some of his movies. Recommendations?

I saw this movie when I was in college with a bunch of friends. We all thought it was going to be an "alien" movie. Everyone else was disappointed it wasn't the typical action movie. But I absolutely loved it. I like to rewatch it every few years at least. It's one of those movies that has gotten even deeper and more thought-provoking as I've grown older. Also my spiritual journey has changed my perception of it. Back in the 90's, I believed more like Palmer, or even Rank (Rob Lowe's character). I've gravitated more towards Ellie though. Especially Ellie at the end. Jodie Foster did an amazing job. So many great actors: Jodie and Matthew of course, William Fichtner, James Woods, Angela Bassett, Tom Skerritt, John Hurt, Rob Lowe, and Jake Busey as the preacher/terrorist.

Contact...so many good things to say. I love this concept and have gotten super into the idea that we are not alone over the last decade. I think the SETI program is so cool and just love that "we" actually are looking and listening. Love the idea of an obsessed kid unwaveringly following her dream. I think the debate about whether or not technology and what amount of technology is beneficial is especially relevant today as I type this out on a phone that allows me to connect with an amazing community of people but that I also despise when I go out in public and people are staring at them and not connecting with each other. Anyway...I really liked and enjoyed 99% of the movie. And then there's the 2 minutes on this other "planet" with her alien dad...ugh...didn't work for me. I get it. Download her memories give her something familiar to communicate with just too strange and creepy for me. Didn't really like how it looked either. Loved the other 99% of the movie. We are arguing about it on Discord and no one can change my mind. Other favorite scenes and best Ames lines also on discord.

Thank you for reacting to contact, such a beautiful and powerful movie and watching it again with you was another great experience. Although Robert Zemeckis is amazing, the science and poetry and message of Contact is the brainchild of Carl Sagan. Carl was a great scientist and astronomer and public communicator. He was mentor to Neil deGrasse Tyson and inspired him to become a next generation science communicator. He participated in our Viking Missions to Mars and our Voyager probes leaving our solar system. He convinced the Voyager team to point its cameras backwards towards home as it was leaving the solar system, and took arguably one of the most famous and profound photographs in human history. Here is Carl's poetic and philosophical rumination on that photograph, called "Pale Blue Dot". You should watch his (3 minute) narration of the photo, and you might even want to turn on the camera and react to it because it is so powerful. It's basically a movie worth of impact compressed into a few minutes of his wonderful words. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wupToqz1e2g My favorite moment (among so many) was Ellie, a scientist, trying to explain the beauty and grandeur of the universe during her trip saying "they should have sent a poet". There is so much I can say about the movie but I see your loyal audience has covered it so well.

from Contact or Interstellar? - Strong father daughter relationship - bright young scientific girl growing up - strong willed female scientist lead character - Matthew McConaughey - Discussion about relativity and time - Discussion about Love being something unprovable - A science fiction movie taking science seriously and portraying both the science and the people who do it very realistically. - Irrational humanity doing self destructive things

Gonna check this out tonight! Can't wait!!! 🤩

I liked even better this watch than the 1-2 times I watched before. Some great concepts (I guess thanks to Carl Sagan). As I agreed in a reply below, "they should have sent a poet" is a good line. I like the depictions throughout the movie of stuff occuring -- well done. James Woods did well. I liked Jena Malone (the kid Ellie) in this and in Donnie Darko (2001). Thanks for the reaction. This movie ranks at No. 4 on my favorite Robert Zemeckis films: 1. Back to the Future (1985) 2. Cast Away (2000) 3. Flight (2012) 4. Contact (1997) 5. Romancing the Stone (1984) 6. Allied (2016) His films I Wanna Hold Your Hand (1978), The Walk (2015), and Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) are on my watchlist. So much to watch, so little time.

Love the watch alongs Ames. If I could make a suggestion/recommendation to help us with syncing. Instead of doing immediately at the beginning pick a spot to pause it like as an example in a Universal movie when it fades to black right after showing the logo. Pause there then do a 3, 2, 1, play. My experience it’s a lot easier to sync the movie with the reaction that way. Different streaming platforms can have extra stuff when it first loads and it takes a few minutes to try to sync it right. Again love the content I’ve binged a bunch of your YouTube videos and I’m happy to be on here to get the full thing.

Probably my favorite watch-a long with you so far, Ames! I can tell how intrigued and passionate you are about this subject matter. As am I. The original 1985 book by Carl Sagan is a must-read / audiobook listen👌Apparently John Hurt's character is based on a real individual named Timothy Taylor of NASA. The stuff about secret knowledge Ufo/UAP programs...Turns out is very much true to life.

Great reaction! Think I had this on DVD but must've sold it. I love thought provoking Sci-Fi as well so even if I hadn't watched this for years it stuck with me because of the story. Jodie Foster is a great Actress and can knock it out of the park in any genre.

Carl Sagan's favorite star constellation is the Corona Borealis (a crescent star constellation) and it appears multiple times in this movie. Like when her dad (alien version) shows his handful of sand you see the shiny bits in the shape of the Corona Borealis or the spilled popcorn on the floor in the shape of a crescent. It appears some other places also.

Man. Screw James Woods. I am glad his house burned to the ground. Such an evil Senator ass hat!!!!
