As you might imagine, Life of Brian caused a great deal of controversy for its blasphemous content when it was released, and it led to this famous debate on the BBC when Michael Palin and John Cleese were invited to defend the film against criticism from the Bishop of Southwark and Malcom Muggeridge. It's definitely worth taking the time to watch this too. https://youtu.be/ZYMpObbt2rs?si=oEbvR7VATdZf4M5N

So glad you watched it, Ames! I think you got most of all the stuff that was there to get...

Best ending ever! I believe Eric Idle said that the only thing that kept The Passion of the Christ from being truly great was not having a song at the end. I like to imagine Christ being fed up with his followers and telling them to fuck off. But I'm a very twisted individual. Thanks to George Harrison for stepping in to finance the film when EMI pulled out at the last minute. Handmade Films, the production company that was created, was responsible for a few other notable films (Time Bandits, Mona Lisa, The Long Good Friday, Withnail and I). Don't sell yourself short Ames. I think you were on top of your game.

Great watchalong. I’ve seen all three major Python film releases at least a dozen times each. But Ames, I think you are waaaaayyyyy too hard in yourself. Just for perspective, I was probably 17 when I saw these films and I cried laughing. For The Meaning of Life, which I hope you get to, I was literally rolling on the floor cry laughing, that’s no joke. I’d never seen anything like it and it was a revelation. But I promise you, I understood maybe only half of the references. It really doesn’t matter. No one expects any more of your reactions than the first time we saw the films. I pray you get to The Meaning of Life soon. There are a few slow parts but the majority of it is gut busting stuff. As always, NIH!!

First time watching Life of Brian. Hilarious. Satire hits home for a kid raised catholic. I actually prefer to Holy Grail. I don't know if that's blasphemy or not. More of the skits hit for me and felt like there were more one liners. It's honestly not my favorite type of comedy but really enjoyed and had some big laughs.

One bit of context that younger people tend to miss is that there were numerous factions in the Middle East that in theory were fighting against Israel, but which often tended to be arguing with each other, sometimes splitting off to form rival factions. These rival factions served as inspirations for the People's Front of Judea, the Judean People's Front, the Judean Popular People's Front, the Campaign for Free Galilee, etc. Without getting into the politics of it all (which I don't know much about), the names of some of these groups include the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, the Palestinian Liberation Front, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, etc. You can see how they served as inspirations for the names of the groups in the movie. Of course, rival opposition groups fighting against one another rather than uniting against the common enemy ("The Judean People's Front!") is still a feature of resistance movements today, so catching the historical reference isn't necessary for understanding the joke. :-)

For me some of these Monthy Python films are more like documentaries than satires. They are really not that far-off from reality. So that makes it a bit hard sometimes to laugh at them. Really talented folks these silly buggers.

This film is 100% accurate to my life

I love that during the "Yes, all of us are different" bit, there's actually an improvised line from an extra who goes "I'm not." It's a great addition and I love the fact that it wasn't a Python who came up with it. Holy Grail is my favorite, followed by And Now for Something Completely Different (basically a compilation of their greatest hits), which I definitely recommend checking out.

I remember watching this film for the first time in school some 16 years ago. Our Catholic religion teacher showed it to us in class. Very cool guy! I also remember the girls in my class not fancying the film AT ALL lol I guess they didn't get any of the jokes 😅 There are so many gems in this movie: the Latin grammar lesson, the hilarious depiction of Pontius Pilatus (making a laughing stock out of the fierce and authoritarian politician), taking the piss out of Judaism and Christianity along with their customs and traditions, satirizing the neverending fights in Israel/Palestine between various groops, pointing out the disgusting hostility of the human race; This is one of those movies I could watch over and over again and never get tired of. In Austria it's shown on TV every Easter and I love it 😊
