Fun! I don't remember this movie, but "they" were definitely a big part of my life when it came out. Congrats to winner.

There was indeed a tv cartoon. I watched it all as a kid … and while it’s all truly just a smart way to market toys, I still love it. The film was even more marketing, as the reason for making it was to kill off many of the generation 1 Transformers, paving the way for the new wave of toys. For another movie from 1986 with a soundtrack full of 80s greatness, Ames, you should watch Rad. It’s a movie about BMX racing, produced by a Talia Shire (Adrien from the Rocky movies, she also has a supporting role), and also featuring U.S. Olympic gymnastics medalist Bart Conner as the “villain”. It’s 80s cheese in all it gloriousness and if I don’t have a movie on your wheel, please make it my pick (or replace whatever I might have).

I hope you’ll be able to watch the non-animated Transformers movie sometime…lots of action and humor and just a really fun movie to watch! ❤️

Eric Idle from Monty Python, top billed!

This reaction is HILARIOUS...and I've never even seen this movie. (the music! :D)

This movie was the rare occasion where my family went out to the theater and yes, it was traumatizing lol. We grew up with these characters and seeing so many killed off like this was brutal. Of course we got over that shock not long after and continued watching the cartoon. Optimus Prime was never intended to return to the series after the movie, but a public outcry (which surprised the producers) resulted in him returning The Transformers franchise originated in Japan with the Diaclone and Microman toy lines from Takara, a Japanese toy company. Hasbro purchased the rights to the toys and rebranded them as Transformers for the U.S. market. Hasbro worked with Marvel Comics to create a backstory for the Transformers toys.

Wait, I won? I won! LFG! " Til all are one!"

This one is so much. It's a pretty good follow up to the first two seasons of Transformers while setting up the third season. Although I don't really think you need to see the show to enjoy Transformers: The Movie. The action is pretty fun, the soundtrack is pure 80's awesomeness, and it's just a good time. Great stuff.

I've got to recommend Transformers One from last year as a follow up reaction. It's basically an origin story for the Optimus Prime and Megatron while also being a great intro to many of the Transformers characters. It's also a beautifully animated movie by ILM. In particular, they visualize the planet of Cybertron before the war between Autobots and Decepticons, and the planet looks spectacular. The action and comedy are also absolutely on point. It's just so much fun, and it'd make for a great reaction.

Transformers! More than meets the eye! Transformers!

OMG is it my birthday?!? Ames is winning!🏆🥸

Fun fact, composer Vince DiCola, who did the musical score for Transformers: The Movie, also composed the score for Rocky 4(you'll get there!) a year earlier, and both scores are very similar!

ooooo I got this on 4K blu-ray. GORGEOUS restoration. Look forward to it.

Some timeline context since you’re jumping right into what is essentially the relaunch of Transformers after 2 years of cartoons. So a few million years ago The Autobots and Decepticons get lost in space after a battle and land on earth, all of them are in hibernation until 1984. This is when a young “Spike” Witwicky (Shia’s character from the movies), and his father “Sparkplug” meet the autobots and they engage in a decades long battle with the decepticons. this movie picks up after season 2 but also skips forward 20 years into the future. So this is the introduction to a BUNCH of new characters. It’s the first time we see Spike as an adult and meet his son Daniel. this was a pretty big shock for young fans. So many of your favorites die off and the story is lead by mostly new characters. Now you’re caught up. As fun as this movie is, the show does NOT hold up. The writing is pretty bad and the animation is strong for the time, but did not age well after 40 years. Some of the reason for the mixed character designs and art is that Transformers is actually several Japanese toy lines by Takara cobbled together. Size/Scale goes out the window after they created a new story line and background for them all. Also I HIGHLY recommend Transformers One from last year. A truly fantastic origin of the Tranformers civil war.

Excellent reaction. So happy you enjoyed not only the film but also the soundtrack (which never ever gets the recognition it deserves). This film takes place between seasons 2 & 3 from The Transformers cartoon which started in 1984. As you’ve probably already heard & figured, this film was intended to introduce new characters and toys to replace the old ones. And yes as a child, I cried when Optimus and Starscream even died. As per your question of other cartoon movies (not the Bay live actions). Most of them should all be available to watch for free on YouTube. Season 1 actually kinda has prequel (3 episode) movies kinda spliced as a movie in the old VHS edits. These are “More Than Meets The Eye” (the pilot) & “The Ultimate Doom”. Season 2 has “Megatron’s Master Plan”, and “The Key to Vector Sigma” 2 parters. Now after this movie, there’s 2 more companion episodic films in the form of “The 5 Faces of Darkness” (a 5 episode one) and of course “The Return of Optimus Prime” which is certainly the Part 2 redemption of the movie. Be sure though to watch “Dark Awakening and Ghost in the Machine” before you watch Return of Optimus as the former explains how Optimus returns and Ghost in the Machine explains what happens to Unicron’s head orbiting Cybertron still. Hope that helps explain the old cartoon and what companion episodes to check out if you want to explore this films lore a bit more. As far as Transformers One the newest one, even though “technically” it’s not connected to this film, imo it’s still an amazing watch and could by some aspects still be considered a prequel imo. So definitely add that to your list. Thank you so much again for reacting to my favorite film from my childhood!!! Bought a new subscription so I could watch along and can’t wait to watch my other favorite films you’ve reacted to already. Thanks again and have a good weekend!! rockstarbd82 (YouTube)

OMG, I almost missed this. Spock and Citizen Kane in The Transformers, how can you not love that. I was a big big fan. Probably my most watched movie as a kid. Optimus Prime was my hero. Seeing him and other regulars just killed off like that broke my little kid heart. Up until then in the regular tv show nobody ever died, but this was on a whole other level in every way. Little did I know they had to make room to sell new toys. Loved your reaction, you got it!

Great reaction video. I also highly recommend Transformers One. It was an amazing movie!
