Newman is one of my favorite actors, just naturally cool with a twinkle in his eye all the time. Cool Hand Luke definitely would be a great reaction. In the first scene, the bartender is Vincent Gardenia. You’d recognize him as the flower shop owner in Little Shop of Horrors. He was Oscar nominated for Moonstruck. Also in the first scene is Willie Mosconi, probably one of the most well known pool players in history. Later in the film, the famous boxer Jake LaMotta plays a bartender. LaMotta was nicknamed the Raging Bull, and played by DeNiro in the brilliant Scorsese movie. Don’t know if Ames has seen it. One of the best American movies ever. Sarah is played by Piper Laurie. Sissy Spacek’s mother in Carrie. I LOVE this movie. Starting this now. Thanks to the winner for nominating it!

I DID notice that that the movie wasn't included on that poll list and thought...."Hmm, did my W.O.W. selection win?" YAY!!!!!!! I'm an avid pool player and I've loved this movie for over 35 years!!! Thanks Ames!

A true WOW film. Great choice by Reggie. Been re-watching Twin Peaks to get a Piper Laurie fix. Love her! Glad you did a last minute shout out for Jackie Gleason. A really nicely nuanced performance. This was a great way to distract my attention from the latest heat wave. One weird question: Do you think some people think this is a Pete Rose bio-pic?

The sequel to this movie is The Color of Money from 1986. Newman reprises his role, and it also stars a young Tom Cruise.

Ames, I don't know if you knew this but the boxer Jake Lamotta who the movie "Raging Bull" is based on played a small role in this as the bartender that kept saying "check" when Eddie and Sarah were ordering their first drinks. I hope you react to the sequel "The Color of Money" directed by Scorsese with Paul Newman reprising his role with Tom Cruise co-starring. This is my fav Paul Newman film. I love the 60s fashion and cool jazz music, reminds me of Twilight Zone black and white series with the jazzy score. All four actors Paul Newman, Piper Laurie, George C Scott and Jackie Gleason were Oscar nominated for their performances in this outstanding movie. Brilliant in every category. Casting. Acting. Ensemble. Score. Cinematography , with enough noir to make it profoundly haunting. Riveting performances, editing, player/pool playing scenes. Gleason is a marvel. Should have done more dramatic roles In His life. Loved the chemistry between George C Scott and Newman. I'm very glad you enjoyed it!!

Great reaction Ames, I'm glad you enjoyed the movie! This film is very special to me. I first saw it when I was 16 years old and just starting to play pool seriously. As a nineteen year old about 35 years ago I was what was known as a "pool bum", jobless and constantly at a legendary pool room in Louisiana that was open 24 / 7 / 365 trying (unsuccessfully) to make a living at the game. I got to meet some of the greatest players of all time who dropped by the place, one of whom was a former world champion who would give me advice. When I first saw The Hustler I was focused on the pool scenes in the film, but upon repeated viewing over the years I came to appreciate more it as a great character study. One interesting thing about the movie I would note is that Jackie Gleason (most famous for playing Ralph Kramden in the classic TV show "The Honeymooners") was an excellent pool player in real life. He grew up dirt poor and hustled pool when he was a kid to make money. He was a phenomenal talent widely known as "The Great One" after being called that by Orson Welles. Thanks again Ames (neat that you have a poolroom named after you!)

I loved the new spin on the spin!

Congrats Reggie. Enjoyed the movie. Sarah dying in the end was sad. I agree that Paul Newman is awesome. Seemingly such a natural as an actor. I really like George C. Scott acting in this. I most know of George C. Scott from watching Patton (1970) over the years and seeing him in the news. My dad liked Jackie Gleason. Ames, sounds like you enjoy pool (billiards). I do too. I played when I was really young and then when I turned 13, a college student methodically taught me how to play over a few months at a game room in an apartment complex. I continued to play regular. The bets I did in high school at a local pool hall dive (w/two tables and a juke box) were $1 or $2 per game.
