Cute movie. I remember watching it in US Gov't class

From Ben Kingsley you definitely have to check out Gandhi (1982). A fantastic film full of great actors about a truly great guy. I really like Kevin Kline in De-Lovely (2004) about Cole Porter. Kline and Ashley Judd were great. If you haven't seen Lincoln (2012) Ames it's high time to watch it and Gandhi. Thirteen Days (2000) about the Cuban Missile Crisis is also great movie about a historical event. Charlie Wilson's War (2007) also deserves much more love than it's getting. It was such a great cameo to have Oliver Stone in the movie talking about conspiracies. Things have only gotten worse since 1993 with money being speech, companies being people and being able to give unlimited campaign contributions.

Kevin Kline was the it guy for a period of time. The Paul Rudd of that era, if I were to equate another actor. Fish called Wanda French Kiss Silverado Sophie’s Choice In and Out Big Chill Soap Dish I Love You to Death Grand Canyon Just a good actor with an amiable nature. I wonder if Ames has seen A Fish Called Wanda?

For me? This is a Gold Standard comedy. Incredibly charming, sweet, funny and brilliantly written and directed. It's really a throwback to the way they used to make comedies in the 30's and 40's. It's IMPOSSIBLE not to smile throughout the entire film. Kudos to Ivan Reitman's deft touch and wonderful casting. Kevin Klein is always a bright spot whenever we see him and lets give credit to Sigourney Weaver who does comedy well when she's given the chance. The hidden gem for me was the Frank Langella's performance. Never get to see him often in a role like this and he killed it. You can never go wrong when you see Charles Grodin in the credits either. First class comedy all the way around and one we really haven't seen in awhile sadly...

Saw this one with my mom back in 1993 and it became one of her favorites that she watches over and over. I love it also, but more because of my mothers love of it. Really good movie. I love that Oliver Stone was able to make fun of himself on the TV saying that he believes there is a conspiracy if you compare the photos. Made me laugh, since Stone is know for the JFK which he says the is a a conspiracy. if you never seen the move JFK (1991) by Oliver Stone I recommend it

I loved watching this with you, oh many of the other actors who portrayed senators and congresspersons and talk shows pundits were actual real people in their real roles at the time as Senators , Congress and press. Oh the older lady who said way to go after he announced his jobs program was none other than the late Helen Thomas who holds the record for the longest-serving White House correspondent, having served in that role for 57 years until her resignation from UPI in 2000. She was a pioneer for women in journalism, becoming the first female White House press correspondent and holding the position of UPI's White House Bureau Chief for over 25 years. It was a different time in politics when members of different political parties would argue during the day, then have dinner and drinks with each other that evening. Lots of respect unlike today where they all actually hate each other. Just a different world back then in American politics.

I enjoy this movie. “I ought to care more about you than me.” I like the connection that evolved between Dave and Ellen, culminating w/kiss in end but agree can’t shake the feel of weird aspect. I thought Ving Rhames (stoic Secret Service agent Duane Stevenson) did well. “I would have taken a bullet for you.” If you recall, Rhames is Marsellus Wallace in Pulp Fiction. Those journalists on CNN "Crossfire" (you asked about) and PBS "The McLaughlin Group" depicted in movie were real and famous. I watched those two shows religiously in the early 90s. As Lana indicated below, several actual US Senators and US House members were in movie. One was Tip O’Neill - a powerful Speaker of the House having the longest uninterrupted tenure (1977-1987) as Speaker.

I love what you said about Kline's performance being "more challenging that he probably gets credit for". I was thinking the same thing. You have often pointed out actors doing private moments and with this movie I was loving that early scene when he comes home and he's singing, thinking he's alone. That "getting home after work" feeling. So good. He's so loose! "Sophie's Choice" has such a heavy reputation....and yet when I think of it, I always think of Kevin Kline and a lot of the comedy that's in his performance! (and Meryl's!). Love him. An underrated actor in a way, although he's always been tops in my book.

Great Reaction, Ames! I'm glad you enjoyed the movie. I really enjoyed watching along with you. This is one of my all-time favorite films. If only...

Okay, so "Dave" is actually one of my favorite movies of all time. I saw this twice in the theaters when it was released. I remember the audience for the first screening was SO into it. Literally every single humorous moment had people laughing. And when Dave fired Bob Alexander, there was a guy in front of me who did a fist pump and whispered, "Yes!" I can recommend a couple other comedies with Kevin Kline in them: "A Fish Called Wanda" and "French Kiss." ("French Kiss" is basically pure romantic comedy, with many of the genre's tropes, so that may or may not appeal to you.) Aside: The "conspiracy theorist" guy that was on TV, saying that the President looked different if you compare photos from before the stroke to after, was Oliver Stone. I think it was after he directed the movie "JFK" (1991) he was known as a conspiracy theorist, so that cameo was him gently poking fun at himself.

I like French Kiss (and have wanted to rewatch) but has been unavailable to stream on any major service due to complicated ownership issues.

It's great that you remembered Ben Stein and his famous "Beuller..Beuller". Its very appropriate that he was in this move beause before he got into acting he was a speechwriter for Presidents Nixon and Ford.
