Just rewatched this one myself a few weeks back. Paired with '11001001' from season 1, an interesting exploration

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

Obviously Picard taking over at the conn position is super fun but I also like how it shows how responsible he feels for the people on the ship. If anything went sideways he wanted to be the only one to bear that burden. I find watching the crew problem solve very satisfying and seeing Geordi in his element in Engineering is pretty cool. "Commander, we should be going like a bat out of hell!" Fricking badass, man.

The regular computer voice on the Enterprise is voiced by Majel Barret. She played nurse Chapel on TOS and married Gene Roddenberry. We will see her some more as a different character in a recurring role on TNG.

Ah Geordi. When you fail at romance, just turn to the holodeck! Endless possibilities.

This came out in October, 1989 (over 35 years ago) but hints at how people might use AI (and the holodeck in particular) for romantic uses. Specifically, I found the parallels between holodeck usage and how some people today have formed romantic and emotional relationships with AI. It'll be interesting to see how these issues will be addressed down the road in fiction and IRL.

It’s so fun to see your excitement for the show because it reminds me of my excitement when I was 9 years old watching this episode. Seeing that slingshot effect was amazing because we’d never seen the enterprise do that before. I also really like this episode and always have. Also did you notice that Picard had a new uniform this episode? No longer had the 2 large seams on the front. Now a single piece front with a zipper in the back.

Geordi is an awesome character. Picard performed well. Riker a good right hand man. Picard's animated response in the discovery of the ship in the beginning of the episode was cool. The technology discussion seemed esoteric at times but not too much. A very nice touch w/the creative simplicity of the sling-shot maneuver -- agree a super cool moment of the episode and for Picard. The hologram (facsimile) was pretty and animated. Geordi's interaction (including the kiss) with the facsimile a little weird to me. Yet, I guess could be good practice and a confidence builder.

Such a great episode! I loved it for getting a more in-depth look at the Enterprise-D. Some trivia: This episode marked the first appearance of the final version of the Starfleet uniforms used in the series. The seams running down the sides of the chest were removed, the shoulder pads were made smaller, and an elastic waistband was added to the bottom of the uniform top. Captain Picard is the only one wearing the updated uniform in this episode. Susan Gibney (Dr. Leah Brahms) auditioned for the roles of Counselor Deanna Troi and Lt. Tasha Yar before Marina Sirtis and Denise Crosby were cast respectively.
