Thank you for putting Jacob’s Ladder on the poll. I’m sad it’s doing so poorly. It’s a really good movie. I’ll shut up about it now.

A great episode that showcases how Empathic abilities can be mistreated by somebody who just wants to use it for their own gain. A little info on the Ferengi: They offer up a bag of gold as part of their bid to the Barzans but they actually view gold itself as worthless. It's only use for them is a way to transport their main form of currency, Latinum. Either this characteristic of Ferengi culture was not have yet been established, or the Ferengi knew of gold's value to other cultures.

I like that the TNG writers kinda called themselves out by giving themselves an unfair edge in every bridge main screen interaction by having a living lie detector on the bridge. They turned in into a theme to explore. I mean, in general, you've got to wonder what possible pragmatic reason there would be to have a counselor sitting on the bridge of a star ship. Especially since most counselors wouldn't have emphatic ability. Maybe it was a 80's thing. Just to indicate how the quality is of S3, this is the lowest rated episode of the season on IMDB.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

Probably not my favourite episode, but not bad or anything. As you pointed out Ral comes off as pretty off-putting as does the romance, but then I suspect it's supposed to. As with a lot of Troi episodes the story isn't as strong but I'm of the opinion that the actress works/acts her butt off to elevate both the story and the actors around her. And of course the scene between Riker and Ral in Ten Forward is incredibly satisfying. There's still a lot to like in this one even if maybe it isn't quite as good as our other S3 eps that we've seen so far. A lot of folk will tell you that S3 is their favourite and I have to agree that it's at least right up there at the top. If this one is one of the "weaker" ones then I think it really speaks to the strength of the entire season. Edit: All just my opinion, of course. Folk are all gonna feel how they feel about each ep/season etc and they're all valid.

I won't spoil anything. But for me, the best Troi episodes are the ones where she either acts totally out of character due to some outside influence, or the ones where she plays host to a visiting family member. The only romantic storyline worth the ride is her relationship with Riker.

Marina Sirtis is a great actress, and I love the line data says about Geordi having him to talk to if they are stranded on the other side of the galaxy.

Troi sure was pleasant to look at this episode. I am glad TNG has a half-Betazoid as a significant character. The ‘romantic’ dynamic between her and Ral was weird, not really convincing or believable to me. An interesting aspect is confirmation of Riker’s positive character with the dialogue of Riker handling Ral in Ten Forward. Riker to Ral: "If you can bring happiness into Deanna's life [which we know unlikely Ral could with that weird not-believable chemistry Ral had w/Troi], nothing would please me more ... Deanna is just the woman to bring some meaning to your sorry existence." Riker may want Troi (at least he cares about her happiness) and likely would think odd for Troi to be with sleaze Ral, but Riker was just stating fact with a confident smile on his face. Lastly, I like episodes with Ferengi. The Ferengi are an interesting aspect in TNG.
