• Local Hero (1983) • Repo Man (1984) • Crash (1996) "Local Hero" is one of the very few films for which I have any memorabilia (a couple of original posters, making-of book, lobby cards, novelization). It's very special. Voluminous bonus points for being a direct inspiration for the TV series "Northern Exposure," also a great favorite. "Repo Man" - astoundingly audacious first feature from rogue director Alex Cox. How in the hell does this picture work, at all? I've thought about this way too much since I saw it in its first run in '84. "Crash" will probably not win any fan favorite votes. I have seen some, but not all, of Cronenberg's films, and this is the one I enjoyed most. Beautifully filmed, regardless of the subject matter. Probably unwholesome and unhealthy though. Has some great car sequences (what else?) including awesome footage of a 60s Lincoln Continental convertible careening around a crowded highway.

• Peggy Sue Got Married (1984). Directed by Francis Ford Copola, Oscar nomination for Kathleen Turner as best actress. Also, Nicolas Cage. A great, great date movie. • The Bear (1988). Winner of the French Academy Award for director Jean-Jacques Annaud. Nominated for the American Academy Award for best editing. Stars Bart the Bear, Youk the Bear, and a few humans. • Soldier (1998). It could be Kurt Russel’s most underrated film. Some call it a “cult” film now, but I just thought it was a good action/sci-fi movie.
