Wow! #28 on the AFI List, All About Eve (1950), really blew me away. I was not expecting this funny, sharp, cutthroat film. This will mark many firsts for me with this cast, like Bette Davis (an incredible performance) and Marilyn Monroe!

I am enraptured by this film because I loved its story structure, its look into the theatre, and what the cost of fame does to you. You see it reflected in all the characters in this, but it leaves me pondering, "Is it worth it?"?. I am still ruminating over the end scene with Phoebe. She is standing in front of the mirror, already rehearsing the same smile Eve wore, and you realize the cycle isn’t breaking. She'll replace her, and it will go on and on. Just a new face on a new girl. Ugh. That triple-mirror shot was INCREDIBLE! I am still thinking about this film as a whole. It has left me thinking a lot.

I don’t want to say the industry is all bad and all women are catty, because it’s not, but I think it is an interesting story about the ruthless ambition that lives in anyone. It felt so hard to watch, gross at times and for what? To be forgotten about and have no one left around you. Still left thinking. Was it worth it?

Let me know you're thoughts down below!! Can’t wait to hear them!

In my humble opinion, one of the finest films on the AFI list.

What I want to know is.....Sunset Boulevard? Or All About Eve! (same year, always compared with each other, similar subject matter, Oscar competitors (Bette, Gloria, Best Picture nominees etc. ). The two actresses actually split the vote that year and neither won, ha! A total shock and an upset! Anyways.....Bette is one of my absolute favorite actors of all time, she was a total chameleon and before Brando changed the game with "Streetcar Named Desire", she did the same thing twenty years earlier with "Of Human Bondage". "All About Eve" was one of her many "comebacks'! ("Whatever Happened To Baby Jane" was another!) Ok, talk after I see the reaction!

This was one of my first Bette Davis movie that I watch as a kid and thought she was great. Amazing actress. I would recommend the following movies that she is in. The Petrified Forest (1936) Marked Woman (1937) Dark Victory (1939) Jezebel (1938) Now, Voyager (1942) The Letter (1940)

This (along with The Apartment) has one of the best screenplays of all time. All About Eve improves tremendously on a second viewing, maybe the most in film history. I highly recommend checking out this amazing film and Ames' great reaction!

My favorite line: "Max, you sly pussss.." I have to admit, I was not expecting this kind of jewel. There's something golden about past cinema: The elegance with complexities and understandable vulnerabilities of one or more characters; even the camera angles gives you something more in perspective. Bette was absolutely brilliant! Even with the mentioned line, it was delivered with a noticeable mask to cover how Margo truly felt about Eve seizing an opportunity to become her understudy; like a birthing star draining a dying one. I thought the same thing. It made me wonder about the industry. Bruce Willis, for example, is one of my favorite all time actors. It really makes you cherish those actors and actresses and what they've brought to the screen over the decades.

Wow. 1st time watch for me, and what a terrific movie. Overall, imho, the storyline felt like a modern day soap opera, with a much more talented cast & much better writing, obviously. The snarky dialogue back & forth, along with the sly digs by the actors performances, was the highlight of the movie. Brilliant dialogue performed by brilliant actors. A great script performed by great actors is the meat & potatoes of any great movie. Betty Davis is clearly the standout performance here, and her entire scene in the house party, where she, in essence, says ‘fuck it, I’m going to get hammered & tells these assholes what I really think!’ is just a tour de force performance!! I loved every thing about her in that scene!! And, HOLY SMOKES, is Marilyn Monroe just screen gold. There’s beautiful, and then there’s Marilyn Monroe beautiful! She just lights up the screen in any scene that she’s in, in her limited time to work with here. And, post reaction, I am completely fascinated by your discussions, Mrs. Ames. Knowing that you have an acting background, knowing that you have 1st hand knowledge of being on a production set, your post viewing monologue was fascinating to me to mull over. Classic plot point in any drama. “For what will it profit a man if he should gain the whole world, but lose his soul?” Wonderful reaction, and a wonderful 1st time watch of a wonderful movie for me!! 👏👏👏👏☺️
