Star Trek: TNG S3xE25 Season Finale "Best of Both Worlds Part 1"

Comments

Janeway knows

🖖🏼🖖🏼🖖🏼🖖🏼 Deanna is only half Betazoid, she mainly reads her mother’s and relatives minds, she mostly senses heavy emotion, also explains why she often senses nothing, so at the poker table she can choose not to sense the others. There are few who like Shelby less than me. Data and Worf need to be careful there crossing the streams like that, I always notice something when watching with reactors

You won't be surprised that a lot of people had this day highlighted on their TNG calendar. And now we have to wait a week again for the conclusion just like back in the day haha. Looking forward to your reaction and insights aka rambles :)

One of THE BEST Season Finales ever made. You were right on how hard it was to wait a year for Part 2. Some trivia: This is the first episode which established Earth as being in sector 001. Wolf 359 is a real star. It's an extremely faint red dwarf, approximately 7.8 light years from Earth, and the 5th nearest star to our sun. This episode is the first time the Borg's iconic catchphrase, "Resistance is Futile", is uttered. This episode (along with The Best of Both Worlds Part II (1990)), were listed on TV Guide's '100 Greatest TV Episodes' (ranking in at No. 36). The visual of the Paulson nebula is the same as the one used for the Mutara nebula in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982). It was created by placing a plastic sheet over a transparent acrylic tank half-filled with fresh water, adding a layer of salt water, shining colored lights through it, then pulling out the sheet and stirring it in a circle.

“Fire.” I like how decisive Riker at the end. I liked the intensity in your reaction. As the excellent S3 progressed, it salvaged TNG after the ‘sins’ of S1 and S2. This last episode of S3 truly put TNG on the map. The icing on the cake of S3 was this finale and bridge to S4. The S3 final episode won Emmy Awards for "Outstanding Art Direction for a Series" and "Outstanding Sound Editing for a Series." The Best of Both Worlds, Part I, went on to be one of the most acclaimed Star Trek episodes. For instance, it is in the TV Guide's "100 Most Memorable Moments in TV History". The episode has routinely been ranked among the top of all Star Trek franchise episodes. In 2016, The Washington Post ranked it the best episode of all Star Trek. Apparently, Patrick Stewart's contract was up at S3 end and there were rumors he might not return for S4. Also apparently, Stewart's job was never safe for the first few seasons – that he could be replaced by Riker, a more Kirk-like character.

Nothing to add that others haven’t. Since you mentioned O’Brien, and how it must be a cool gig to come on periodically to work the transporter. I don’t think it’s spoilery to say his role in the Star Trek universe does expand. The actor, Colm Meaney, got his start on TNG but he’s now a well known Irish movie (and sometimes TV) actor. Always good to see him still acting. Fantastic reaction. Definitely been an impatient wait for me but well worth it.

Ames: I really hope they end this season with a big bang... Me: Well... Riker: Mister Worf... Fire. It's almost hard to articulate how huge this episode was for Trek fans when it aired. I was young when it came out, and I still remember what it was like to watch it. I was so freaked out, and I thought it was so good. I also remember that, that ending set the bar for cliffhanger endings in TV for years to come. That ending line from Riker resonated so strongly even a few years later that I have perfect recall of people watching cliffhangers at the end of shows, and if they didn't measure up, you'd hear, "It's no 'Mister Worf, fire.' " What a great reaction, and to one of the best episodes of Trek, not just in this season, but, like, ever.

This was such a huge deal when it aired, viral before we used that word. Michael Piller, the writer, had put a lot of his own situation into writing Rikers's story since he himself was unsure if he was returning for S4 after only having signed a 1 year contract. The speculation among the fanbase, and just television viewers/tv media, was off the charts. Was Picard going to survive? Was Riker leaving? Would he become the new captain if Picard didn't make it? What about Shelby kinda giving off main character vibes, was she sticking around in some capacity? None of us knew and with the longer wait between seasons back then, usually a full summer or longer, it just got more intense. And was hell with the waiting lol.

Since I haven’t seen it mentioned, Picards Borg name, Locutus, is Latin for ‘The one who speaks’

An personal inside joke.. I was an engineer for the Borg-Warner Corporation from 1978 to 2012. After this episode of TNG, my wife and I exclusively referred to my company as “The Borg.” “You got an email from the Borg.” “I have to finish my project for the Borg this weekend..”. Always, the sly nod to this episode..”Resistance is futile. Freedom is irrelevant. Self-determination is irrelevant.” Always in good fun, however, because the Borg is/was a really great company to work for. I still fondly remember my time with the Borg.

So I just did the watch along with you. I can't emphasize enough what we are all feeling on June 15, 1990. When those words "to be continued" came on the screen it was a kick in the gut for us fans of the day. Then we had to wait nearly THREE MONTHS for the second part of the episode to premier, one of the longest summers i can ever remember. Now it doesn't seem like that long of a wait but keep in mind this was television of 1990....no digital, no streaming, you couldn't go to amazon or netflix or itunes and instantly bring up the episode when you wanted to. We actually had to wait for the conclusion and that wait sucked.

I am one of those fans who watched this for the first time that summer evening. I remember that I had taken a long weekend to visit with my parents. It was a beautiful June evening, so I turned on the TV on the deck. Mom and Dad were not fans, but my father brought out beers and watched with me. I told him that this was going to be completed in the autumn. At the end, when Riker said "Fire" and it cut to black, Dad turned to me and said "You're going to need to visit again in the fall." I'm 60 years old. I've watched a lot of TV. I can easly say that The Best of Both Worlds is one of the most memorable episodes of TV that I've ever seen. This is right up there with the M*A*S*H finale, Seinfeld's The Contest, and Two Cathedrals of The West Wing, and The Battle of the Bastards in Game of Thrones. There were 178 episodes of TNG. It means something when you remember where you were when you first watched a single episode.

Sins of the father is still my favorite of this season Pickards epic delivery of FAFO is spectacular but this one is a close second and being the first real season ending cliff hangar I remember this being one of the first times I experienced that "are you kidding me, this is BS moments" at like 8 years old. So mad, but so excited lol. Youre so right about the writing, you dont even have to be a sci fi fan to enjoy TNG lots of just good stories, I feel lucky growing up with this series into my teens.

A's reactions to Data being threatened are intense, no question. But her seething, cold hated for Shelby is really something else 😆 You're right, A, she's a really great character, written and acted, to elicit these types of reactions from us. (I've rewatched this reaction way too many times already lol)

Ken Schneyer

Another amazing reaction, Ames! Thank you. The 98 days between this episode and the start of Season 4 were torture. On Saturday, September 24, 1990, I had gone into work by public transportation, and literally *ran* from the bus stop to our apartment so that I wouldn't miss the start of Part 2. And while you (Ames) may know (or at least think you know) certain things about the rest of the series, *we* had no clue as to whether Patrick Stewart had even signed for Season 4! Most excruciating cliffhanger EVER.

Anakin Starkiller

I hope they end this season with a big bang . That's definitely an understatement.

Imagine what it was like not knowing what happens next haha. I was pretty young when this came out so I don't remember but having to wait until the next year to find out what happens must have been hard.
