Star Trek: TNG S4xE2 "Family"

Comments

Janeway knows

Heart of glory season one explains everything as for the holodeck that appeared in Emissary and Where silence has lease, in season 2. Long story short Worf’s parents were kilked by Romulans when he was 6, the Intrepid rescued him and the Rozshankos took him in. Hope you are feeling better, while you rest you could watch a few season 1 and 2 episodes that you missed. (For season 1 Heart of glory, Arsenal of Freedom, 11001001, The big goodbye and Lonely among us, for season 2 the Emmissary, where silence has leased, manhunt, the Royale and Samaritan snare. Haven from season 1 as a bonus if you want to see Troi’s mom the first time.)

So happy you are on this journey. The character of Picard has been a hero of mine my whole life. There is a great deal of Patrick IN Picard and he becomes even more incredible as you go on.

Really excited to see Picard grow his relationship with his family. It's like a fire that Picard will continue to warm up to.

I think at least part of what you're sensing about the pacing, A, is that there isn't really a sci-fi component to this one. There is some day-to-day Starfleet stuff, the ship repairs, crew scheduling etc, and we make reference to things that have happened on past eps. But there's no real Trek style problem to solve, no alien politics, no spacey timey vortex, no super powerful being to defeat. It's 100% character focused, which is a little unusual given TNG's episodic format. This might be the first episode we've seen that takes this sort of line, and I think it was a very smart, kinda daring, choice right after BoBW 1&2. Almost the exact opposite, BoBW was *very* sci-fi. So this was almost a pallette cleanser of sorts. Top tier episode. Obvs the acting, the story, writing, ect are all amazing. But I think what I appreciate most is the willingness to try a different sort of storytelling for Star Trek. And they pulled it off. Wonderful reaction as always, A, see you in the next one🖖

From q who to here. TNG knows how to spin an arc! As excited as i was for the last two eps, I knew this would be a big one for you! Yeah worfs back story has been broken up across the seasons in bits and pieces, from sins of the father it was mentioned after the attack on kitomer he was rescued by a federation ship, the Klingon empire unaware of his brother they told federation his family was dead and he ended up a foster with a family on Earth, being raised by humans is one of the point of contentions every time he encounters Klingons. Why Kern wanted to test if his "blood was klingon" before mentioning the challenge in the high council.

"Family" is one of my favorite TNG episodes. Partly because my favorite part of this series are the character interactions, and this is basically an entire episode of that. But I also like it because it has such direct continuity with the previous couple episodes, and that's something that was rare in traditional "episodic" TV. (I guess because viewers didn't have easy access to past episodes, besides reruns. So they wanted individual episodes to make sense to viewers, even if they just watched them randomly out of order.) I think it really wasn't until the 2000s, that it became the norm where series had these big overarching storylines. Here in "Family," we get to see the logical, emotional ramifications that the characters would go through after such an event like the Borg cliffhanger. No magical reset button.

Hiya Ames... absolutely loved your reaction to this one - even though seeing you cry made me cry! 🤗🥰 This and BOBW1&2 are definitely a trilogy and goes to show there is a lot of pain from the fallout of having something so terrible happen to you - pain that doesn't go away overnight; the acting by Patrick Stewart and Jeremy Kemp as the feuding Picard brothers was top-notch, Robert forcing Jean-Luc to face what he was suppressing... just what you need family for - to help you! Sending love and best wishes from the UK 😍😘 ...oh, hope you have a lovely Valentine's Day soon too Ames!❤️

The best episodes of TNG and Star Trek in general are ones that shine a mirror to our humanity. Data exploring his wish to be human, Worf struggling with his dual natures, Q trying to define humanity, and most of all Picards needing to be reminded of his humanity. These episodes with Picard doing just that are some of the best Trek ever. It’s why the weight of this episode and the silliness of him taking a vacation on a pleasure planet are so good. It was important for Picard to be grounded after being Locutus. It would have felt like a cheat to just pop him back into the crisis of the week stuff. Love this episode.

Great writing and great acting.

I won't even try to match Catchermag's insightful post below. When I first watched S4E02 back in the day, I thought the genius Ronald D Moore (who wrote Family) laid it on a little thick with Picard's older brother, e.g., his animosity. Worked out in the end. Did great w/Picard. I thought the Wesley Crusher dad hologram well done. Sad that Wesley's dad is gone. Enjoying your TNG reactions.

When I make a list of Top 10 TNG episodes, this is always near the top. While I love a good action episode with lots of hardware flying about, the character episodes are the ones that really hit the hardest. Worf and his Parents: Worf was orphaned at the age of 6 during a surprise Romulan attack on the Khitomer outpost. (See, The Enemy, S3E7, where he refused to donate blood to the injured Romulan.) Sergey and Helena Rozhenko are his adoptive parents.

Silver Machine

A superb epilogue to Best of Both Worlds 1 & 2. I actually think of this 3-episode story arc as the first (and best?) TNG movie.

Def one of those episodes I didn't really connect to as a kid, but now much more so. A daring and wise choice to let the 3 characters reflect and work through stuff they went through. Picard has build such a high wall around him and he went to his brother to knock it down. Even for just a moment. We become more and more invested in this crew. Bring on season 4!

Look, it's not a Deanna episode. I get it, how often can I manage to shoehorn in a compliment for her in these comments 😆 But can we talk about the scene between her and Picard in his quarters at the beginning. Getting to see her be both a friend and counselor at the same time, the genuine happiness on her face for Picard, a little cheekiness, but at the same time understanding what he's is going through even if he doesn't...Stop, I can't😭 My queen.

The only reason I'm watching your reaction is because someone else died. I'm 3½ years post transplant and I can so relate to this episode. Life can break you and, with luck you can be rebuit, but you can never be the same afterwards. But we simply carry on and do the very best we can, because we owe it to those who love us and to those who have given up so much for us.

I jumped right to this reaction from the Season 3 cliffhanger. Ep1 is good, but Ep2 is what really cements Picard's experience into the storyline. Such a great episode, even the B and C plots were excellent. Its one I come back to a lot.
