Clue (1985)

Used to watch this on Comedy Central on repeat back in the 90s. Not just funny but also fascinating. In theaters it ended differently depending on the showing, so you could watch it more than once and have a different outcome. That’s seriously awesome.

Such a funny movie, great watching your reaction. I think it is the best board game movie ever made. When this movie came out in theatres, there was only one ending, but depending on which theater you went to, you would have one of the three ends. So each of the theater received one of the three endings. So now when you watch it they put all three ending into the movie.

I think it's always funny, how no one notices (first time viewing) that Yvette's French accent disappears right before she's murdered and all the women are wearing opposite colors to their pseudonyms: Mrs. White is in black; Ms. Scarlett is in green and Mrs. Peacock is in gold. Funny little things all around. I think you'd love Noises Off. It's based on a stage play... about a stage play. Great dialogue and physical comedy. Also the cast list would knock you silly. 👍

Just think about how diverse a performer Christopher Lloyd is. All within a year and a half's time, he was the Klingon captain Kurg in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984), Professor Plumb in Clue (1985), and Doc Brown in Back to the Future (1985)!

When the movie was released, there were 3 different endings. Every theater had one of three endings randomly. When it came out on video, that's when they added the "or maybe this happened" endings.

Clue is one of the best comedies and the only good adaptation of a board game. It's so funny with jokes coming from an all-star cast. Tim Curry is the standout, though. Tim Curry has gone on record as saying Clue is his favorite role. Great reaction.

I also know of some interesting trivia regarding the ending: -Mrs. Peacock's ending originally had her getting shot dead by the evangelist as she tries to escape the house. However, at one point, this was changed because they thought it was too dark. So Mrs. Peacock's death shot was left on the cutting room floor, and Eileen Brennan recorded a line of Mrs. Peacock's cry of "Let go of me! I'm a senator's wife!" for her ending to be dubbed over in the scene. The chief's line "We got her" thus changed meaning from shooting her down to merely taking her into custody, although gunsmoke from shooting Mrs. Peacock is still visible when he holsters his gun. -A fourth ending was filmed where Wadsworth kills everyone but was cut at the last minute. The events of the movie play out as usual, and the ending starts out completely identical to the second ending, with Wadsworth accusing Mrs. Peacock of murdering everyone. It leads to the "turn out your pockets, empty your purses" sequence. Wadsworth produces the gun, explaining that in his lifelong quest for perfection, he has always failed: he tried to be the perfect husband, only to have his wife kill herself; he tried to be the perfect butler, only to find himself employed by a blackmailer. Therefore, instead, he decided to commit the perfect murder by killing an entire blackmailing ring and leaving no witnesses. When the guests point out that they're witnesses, Wadsworth informs them that the brandy they were served at dinner was a slow-acting poison and that he plans to lock them in the house and leave them to die. The Evangelist returns and wrestles Wadsworth to the ground. Wadsworth confesses by beginning to reenact the murders again, while the Evangelist is too confused to stop him. When he reaches the point where he greets Colonel Mustard, Wadsworth leaps outside, slams the door behind him, and locks it, trapping the others inside as he escapes in a police car. The Feds break through the conservatory window. The film cuts to Wadsworth driving away, smirking at his success, only to hear growling from the backseat. He turns to see the guard dogs, who leap at him just before the film fades out. However, it was cut because it was deemed too dark for a comedy. They figured that no one wants to spend 90 minutes laughing along with these characters only for all of them to die in the last five minutes

Tim Curry should have won all kinds of awards for his performance in this movie. Unfortunately, comedies are not awarded all that much. But his running around and all those lines, and that spectacular acting in the three endings was amazing. I love the running joke of "To make a long story short......." "Too late!" was great. And I think they were doing an homage to the Holy Grail every time they said, "Get on with it!" This is a one-of-a-kind movie and I hope they never try to do it again with another cast. It's perfect as-is.
