Star Trek: TNG S4xE15 First Contact

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

If I'm being real honest I've never been a big fan of the Riker/Malcorian lady sleeping together schtick. Not that I have any objection to the joke itself but it feels somewhat out of place to me in TNG. But whatevs, it's not something I'm going to get too bent out of shape about. That aside, I adore the rest of this episode. The way it is told somewhat from the other side, like you pointed out, A, is really fun. And all of our guest actors crushed it. The fella playing the Chancellor really nailed his speech at the end. Great reaction as always, A, catch you in the next one 👍🖖

I love this episode. I love it when shows/movies find ways to make us see familiar characters in a whole new light by introducing other characters react to them. So now we see the Enterprise and Picard and the whole crew through new eyes. Aside: I know the scene between Riker and Bebe Neuwirth probably doesn't play as well today as it did then, but count me among those who found it very funny. I think it helped too, when it aired, that Neuwirth was more recognizable at the time as Lilith from "Cheers," so it felt like a blatant cameo, and the audience felt more in on the joke.

For a classic sci-fi twist with similar first contact overtones, check out The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951). Only this time, it's the Earth being visited by an alien on a first contact mission. It's directed by the ever surprising Robert Wise, who also gave us West Side Story (1961), The Sound of Music (1965), and the first Star Trek movie (Star Trek: The Motion Picture, 1979), among many other fine films. How about that for diversity?

You may want to avoid looking at the poster for any of the movies, as some of them contain spoilers

Great episode. Great reaction/outro. I love the concept of first contact. Riker is open-minded enough to do what he needed to do. The more advanced species initiating first contact being perceived as a conqueror (not benevolent) or at least a security threat -- and with the less advanced species being confused and scared -- are issues. I think most on Earth would not be ready to learn we are not the center of the universe if that were the case.

Yes, TNG in fine form here. It was a nice touch that the wine Picard drank with the chancellor was from his brother from the episode Family. He told Jean-Luc to not drink it alone and he didn't.

Love ethics episodes from the Trek universe ! Truly feel that Star Trek has always been groundbreaking with its treatment of moral issues, love that the chancellor makes the choice to wait based on his people's reaction and that he let Mirasta go knowing that her disappearance would fuel government conspiracy theories. A pleasure to re-watch this with you!

I like this one a lot, I like that not everyone is ready for first contact. We also learn more about the reasoning.
