Although I think this film may have a couple of flaws, I didn't mind because I really enjoyed it! I thought it was action-packed, tense, and emotional! I don't think it tops my Spielberg faves, but I loved it!

Thanks for getting me to watch this one!

Not my favorite Spielberg movie, but it's a fun ride all the same. Always happy to see Tom do his thing onscreen. Any movie that has young Dakota I'm in. She always shines maybe even more than the adult actors in the movie. All the time in this movie we're on this wild ride and it's great, but then comes Tim Robbins and wow. He is just so fantastic and the whole sequence in the basement is great. The grandparents at the end were the stars of the 1953 movie Gene Barry and Ann Robinson. It's always great when you can give a little nod the the original one.

I agree with your post reaction commentary on this. Everything that happened here was completely unexpected and grounded in reality. Dakota Fanning did an excellent job and her later roles are just as amazing. Some trivia: During the filming of the underwater scenes (where the ferry capsizes), director Steven Spielberg played a prank on Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning by playing the dramatic music from Jaws through the massive underwater speakers on the sound stage. While filming nearby, Tom Cruise, along with a twenty-member entourage including Steven Spielberg, visited a Lexington, Virginia Dairy Queen. Cruise saw a jar on the counter with a photo of Ashley Flint and her story. Flint had been in a go-cart accident a few months earlier, leaving her family with a mountain of hospital bills. Cruise put $5,000 cash into the jar

Not my Fave Spielberg flick but not sure any other director outside Villanueva and James Cameron could have done any better.. Let's be honest. the real star here (despite Tom Cruise appeal) are the Special effects team. I was HEARTBROKEN when this won the Spielberg Poll. The BEST film he's done in the last 20 years was MUNICH. Shame you couldn't react to that. BTW....Caught DISCLOSURE DAY last night.. It's not great but it is entertaining and not necessarily a film people need to see in the theatre. Let's hope he has at least ONE last great film in him because as good as Disclosure was? It's not even in his top 10...

This movie scared the crap out of me as a teenager. Still does. Also the ex-wife was in lord of the rings, she played the Princess in The Two Towers. The Earth diseases thing is true to the book, but the characters and plot are very different, although the themes of hopelessness and one-sided nature of the fight are accurate to the book. Robbie is the worst. I get that he has tension with Ray, but I lost a lot of sympathy with him when he started running towards the fighting and explosions and putting his sister in danger.

Mister Lou

So they get zapped to dust but their clothes dont burn or anything? OK.. then why were there so many dead bodies floating down the river? Other than those inconsistent alien kills, this is a fun ride!

Tom Cruise trying to throw a baseball: biggest laugh in a Spielberg movie ever. Biggest laugh in a Tom Cruise movie? Tom taking batting practice in A Few Good Men. Stay away from bat sports, Tommy. You have as much chemistry with them as you do with your leading ladies.

I like the movie. “No time wasted” and “dread” are good descriptions. Tom’s ex-wife is Éowyn. Robbie somewhat not all there, but did help those people get on the ferry. Agree, Dakota Fanning = incredible kid actor. Tom Cruise = shows once again how good of an actor he is. The PBS American Experience documentary on the 1938 radio broadcast by Orson Wells (then age 23) is great. https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/films/worlds/ I enjoy Lincoln (2012). I love Bridge of Spies (2015). I like Empire of the Sun (1987). I read your comments about Disclosure Day on Discord. I may see it this weekend.

I really enjoyed this when I saw it in the theater. It’s tense, brisk, and fun. I appreciate Spielberg being so varied in his work. This is a popcorn movie, as is Jaws, Raiders, Catch Me if you Can……then he has meat and potatoes movies like Close Encounters and Minority Report…..then fine dining like Empire of the Sun, Saving Private Ryan, Color Purple, Munich. Then, for me at least, theres the outlier better than anything Schindlers List. And I like them all. I don’t eat one kind of food. Sometimes I drink beer, sometimes wine, sometimes scotch. And I am glad this channel seems to feel the same way. Thanks Ames.

I haven't gotten into the reaction, but for me, the movie loses its momentum when Robbie inexplicably decides to run away. Not that I loved Robbie, but the core of the movie was Ray's strained relationship with his kids. So when one of the key components of that relationship disappears, it felt like the story that had been building got cast aside. I also feel like it didn't really have a satisfying climax/conclusion. The solution of the germs defeating the aliens while true to the original source material, didn't work for me here. I mean, just about every other element in the story was updated and unique to this movie, and then they just randomly threw in this solution from the other versions, a solution which wasn't set up at all. I'm making it sound like I hate this movie, and I don't. I just have mixed feelings about it, to the point where if someone said that they loved it, I could understand that. But if someone said they thought it was disappointing, I could understand that too.

Dakota Fanning's sister Elle Fanning stars in Super 8 (2011), another film where Steven Speilberg was the producer. It was directed by J.J. Abrams. It's another film with a younger cast carrying much of the story. With a bit of E.T., a dash of Stranger Things, a pinch of Goonies and all the heart of Stand By Me, it really is a great watch. I cannot recommend it enough.

A fine movie. I knew the ending would not play well in a Hollywood movie, but in the book it works well. HG Wells was a science teacher and explored themes of natural selection, social Darwinism and European colonization. I don't get the motivation of the son wanting to join the army, doesn't make sense to me. But other than that I agree with the positives you pointed out Ames. Not the ultimate War of the World adaptation I was hoping for though. Probably in Spielberg's mid range catalogue, but that means it's still a good movie. I would like to highlight two adaptations not everybody may know about. 1. In 1938 Orson Welles directed a radio drama based on the book. They used the breaking news format. Not all listeners heard the introduction and thought it was real causing panic in some households. It sparked a whole controversy. There is a tv movie about this. The 'Night that panicked America'. A fun watch. This helped put Orson Welles name on the map, allowing him to have carte blanch on a movie you may know. It sits atop a list you have been working hard on. ;-) 2. In the 70's Jeff Wayne made a musical version of the book. It's quite unique. Something in between an audio book and a musical, a Rock Opera of sorts. It features the narration of legendary Richard Burton who easily equals Morgan Freeman in narration. It's a double album and I love it. Wayne has toured with this show in recent years and I went 3 times over recent years. It features a band, orchestra, big screen and a big alien tripod. If you like 70's music (rock/guitar) and scifi, definitely give it a listen.

I haven’t seen this since it came out in theaters. Might revisit it with Ames.

Absolutely awesome! You know, these watch along really give me a chance to watch all of these wonderful movies again. I haven't seen it in so long and I'm so happy I get to watch them. The action in this movie is so intense, and Tom Cruise was the man to bring it. The Action Man himself. Great and fantastic. Thanks so much for this fabulous watch along. I think I need to do the Spirited Away watch along again after this. These magical movies are my favorite.
