Ben affleck almost unrecognizable in this… as a child of the 70s these actors were much like my next door neighbors the Hartmanns. The soundtrack brings me back… can’t get enough 70s nostalgia. Check out THE ICE STORM and my all time favorite THE TREE OF LIFE if 70s nostalgia appeals to you..

I thought it was very insightful of you to pick up on the chemistry between much of the cast and wonder if they're still friends. Many have worked together quite a bit. Your guy, Rory Cochrane, who played Slater, returned with Renee Zellweger (who has a cameo in this) the following year in Love and a .45, and worked with her again the year after that as Lucas in Empire Records, which I believe you've seen. Ben Affleck also brought him back for Argo. Cole Hauser (Benny) worked with Matt and Ben in Good Will Hunting. Joey Lauren Adams played opposite Jason London's twin brother, Jeremy, in Mallrats, with Ben, and the red head is played by Marissa Ribisi, Giovanni Ribisi's twin sister, who was in Saving Private Ryan with Matt (and everyone else), and Adam Goldberg (Tony) and Anthony Rapp (Mike), play sidekicks again as Saul and Bender in A Beautiful Mind. I'm sure there's more, but that's all my brain could come up with, without going down an IMDB rabbit hole.

Time is funny, Dazed and confused was made 17 years after when the movie actually takes place, and even in 1993, 1976 felt and looked like such a different time and era. But if you made a movie today that took place 17 years ago, it would take place in 2007, and I don't think it would have the same nostolgia tha the 70's had even in 1993. The individual decades before 2000 all had their own unique look and identity, which I don't think we've had post-2000.

Ames, enjoyed your reaction. Linklater did do a good job capturing the 70's in that setting in Texas (and could be in other states or Canada, etc.) I was a high school freshman in Texas in 1977 (one year after the time in this movie). The awesome soundtrack is the music we listened to. In high school, I spent so much time in those places shooting pool, and playing foosball (no spinning) and pinball, and listening to music from the jukebox.

I remember this movie genuinely changing my life when I first saw it. I had never seen anything like it before. I didn't know you could make a movie and just have characters interact with one another, talk to one another the way I talked with my friends at the time. And it's always a blast watching someone else experience it for the first time. If you enjoyed this then I would highly recommend Everybody Wants Some, Linklater's unofficial sequel to this movie. It's not AS good, but still quite enjoyable and extracts that same nostalgia on a college campus set in the 80s. Good stuff, great reaction!

SUCH a good reaction. Also Rory Cochrane, who played Slater, has an incredibly great performance with Renee Zellweger and Liv Tyler (daughter of Aerosmith lead singer, Steven Tyler) in the movie Empire Records. It is weird and quirky and fun.
