Great reaction Ames! This is episode gets you in the feels. We're right with you through the guts and glory.

Yes, unfortunately it doesn't get any easier as we move along in the series.

Bittersweet /ˈbidərˌswēt/ "pleasure accompanied by suffering or regret; containing a mixture of sadness and happiness". Great reaction Ames! So many lovely moments in this episode, but with a common thread of anxiety and sadness throughout. I felt so bad for Leckie. He was crazy about Stella and was completely caught off guard. Definitely a "calm before the storm" episode. Every Marine knows their time in Melbourne is a chance to catch their breath, before being thrown back into hell. As the ship pulls away from the port, each soldier is asking himself, "Who will we lose this time? Will it be me?"

In Episode 1, at Alligator Creek (the Tenaru), though not really shown, Leckie and his machine-gun crew removed all the tracer rounds (usually one per every six bullets) from the machine-gun belts. Every time you see the flash of a tracer, imagine 5 other invisible bullets around them (think back to BoB). At night tracers can help you adjust fire but you can function without them. The dangerous thing is an enemy can follow the tracers back to your location. And THAT is what happened to an adjacent gun crew with Johnny Rivers and Al Schmid. The Japs zeroed in on Rivers, killed him, and threw a grenade that blinded Schmid. Schmid wiped the blood away and fired blindly, directed where to aim by the ammo bearer. Over 200 enemy bodies would be found near this gun. Schmid received the Navy Cross and did recover some of his eyesight. His actions would be the subject of a Hollywood movie, "Pride of the Marines," starring tough-guy John Garfield.

Ames, please give the timestamp when the episode actually begins. Not all of us have those introductory scenes. The actual episode begins around 6:06. Please note the difference in future reactions.

"I'm a foreigner on your shores, forgive my ignorance of your customs." Apparently, the head writer Bruce McKenna noted, "The 1st Marine Division spent more time in Australia than Easy Company did in Europe."
