I've been waiting on this one, out day dreaking but when I get home I'm turning this one on!

Woke up EARLY Friday morning and binged on both episodes before work. Loved it. off to a good start. 👍😁

The CO's bloody vomit was most likely the result of a stomach ulcer, the reason he was drinking milk was probably because it helped calm the severe heartburn that ulcers cause.

The environment they were in was very unique. Mostly flying around 25k feet, a warm day was 20 below zero, could be as low as 60 below, they showed how if you even touched metal you would freeze to it instantly. Without oxygen masks they'd pass out in under a minute and asphixiate shortly after. With the flak each mission was more or less the shelling from breaking point episode from BoB. It's why that's one of the few jobs that had a tour. If you survived 25 you were done. Later by the time my grandfather got on one, they upped that to 35 missions. With 10 men on each plane, losses stacked up quickly.

I have not watched yet. Will do first watch with you. Been looking forward to this series.

Yeah, production is gorgeous on this one. Bit of a double-edged sword as the lack of HD helped BoB with looking so real while this is so polished and crisp but I’m in awe of how it looks and looking forward to learning more about this group and remain ever so grateful for the sacrifices this generation made. Also watching first time along with you, Ames, and excited for the next drop so I can continue the series.

Great watching this first episode with you, Ames! What a way to start the miniseries! Maj. Gale 'Buck' Cleven is one cool customer, but that mission was intense! First the flak, then the German fighters. (Although, come to think of it, Gale had Bucky's “lucky deuce” two-dollar bill AND Marge's photo stuck to the cockpit window, so he was pretty well protected. 😅) When Gale was inspecting his plane after the mission, it gave me chills looking at all the damage. When he says to Bucky, "We've got a long road ahead of us", the truth is really hitting home. Flying test flights over Nebraska definitely didn't prepare them for this!

The production is awesome. I am no expert, but advantages of bomber planes (large, slow) over fighter planes (small, fast) include the bomber planes carry more fuel (for longer trips) and more bombs (the purpose of a bombing run). When the US bomber aircraft were returning after the aborted mission and being chipped away at by the German fighter aircraft, it's not about German planes generally being better than US planes. Instead, it's that the fighter class is a smaller plane that is fast and more nimble. In contrast, the bombers are large and less nimble, and can be like sitting ducks. Thus, I guess in that context, the German fighters were "better" than the US bombers. For missions not far away (and thus do not require too much fuel for fighter planes), the bombers can have fighter escorts (having smaller fuel tanks) as protection.

This was great. Though with all the characters wearing oxygen masks I'm probably going to get confused about which character is which. The german fighters can fly at over 400mph/643kph whereas the b-17 flew about 200mph/321kph. That's why the german planes looked so fast. Bombers can fly much further than fighters but the trade off is that single person fighters are so much faster than bomber planes.

I enjoyed the first episode. It's clearly well made. It may not be fair to compare it to Band of Brothers, but it's inevitable. With BoB they allowed you to spent a good amount of time with the characters before the action. It was really like you were one of them, making it so heart wrenching when bad things go down. Of course the interviews with the actual persons, helped to make it so real for the viewer. Not saying they should repeat that here, at this point that can't anymore of course. But it wasn't even clear to me if these were actual persons, but that may be my bad. But they do however jump in the action so fast, I hardly know who's dying/getting hurt and just care a whole lot less than with BoB, because they feel much further removed from me that with BoB. But it was the first episode, let's see what they do with the whole season.

I have been looking forward to this series since I heard it was going to be produced. I’m 61, and literally every adult in my family participated in the air war against Germany. Most significantly, at the time of this episode, my great uncle was in command of the 8th Air Force Fighter Group, then the 8th Air Force 2nd Bomb Division, flying 24 combat missions in fighters and bombers as a major general (two stars). The 100th Bomber Group depicted in this series was part of 8th Air Force. This guy was a legend in my family, and, as a teenager who had already fallen in love with history, I talked to him quite a bit in the years before he died. He had no kids and I think it tickled him to indulge my many phone calls and letters quizzing him. Based on what I learned from him, I’m looking to see if some big developments in the air war are examined. First, the adoption of spare fuel tanks on the fighters that could be dropped when they went into action. This allowed the fighters to accompany the bombers all the way to Germany as well as control the skies over Normandy on D-Day. Second, the change in tactics of the fighters, from close-in defense of the bombers to flying far ahead to actively hunt to German fighters. Looking forward to the rest of the series and your reactions.
