True Grit (2010) Watch Along

Gotta give the Cohen brothers credit here. NOBODY writes dialog quite as well as they do and this film proves it..

Awesome, the version with John Wayne was a great movie. You’d love the sass and dialogue from Kim Darby it was epic.

I saw this at the theater and it's good but just not as good as the original with John Wayne

This movie followed the book pretty well, including dialogue (few contractions). This IS a better movie than the Wayne one, in every category. Comparisons and examples available from numerous critics. Only exception might be a young Robert Duvall as Pepper (of course). Anyway, it is a moot point, because at the end of the movie, and book, which character REALLY had True Grit? You decide Ames...

Douglas C. Jones has a whole slew of western novels about this lawless period in Indian Territory, Judge Parker, and underpaid Deputies.

Normally I do not like remakes, especially when the original was of a rather noteworthy cast and good overall film, that's not to say remakes are bad but somethings should be left alone. This is however, one of the few exceptions where I was not disappointed.

I like this movie (I like it better than the original). I enjoyed my rewatch with your reaction. Good production (e.g., cool lighting in certain scenes, etc.), good dialogue (as RFK fan noted), good story, etc. I like near the end him carrying her to save her. I took my son to see this in the theater on Christmas Eve in 2010. Nominated for 10 Oscars including the Coen brothers, Jeff Bridges, and Hailee Steinfeld. Hailee Steinfeld was cast at age 13. Jeff Bridges was apparently supportive of her. She has nothing but good to say about him. And as you noted, what an opportunity for her. You may not hear much about this, but I very much liked the Apple TV+ comedy-drama series (such a cool series) starring Hailee Steinfeld as the poet Emily Dickinson: DICKINSON (2019-2021) (3 seasons, 10 half-hour episodes per season) IMDb=7.7 Rotten Tomatoes 92% (Audience score 92%)

THANK YOU!! I love this movie. HUGE fan of Hailee Steinfeld! She got a best supporting actress nom for this role in 2011 and its well deserved!

Hailee Steinfeld set up a "swear jar" on set, just like the Hollywood actress Loretta Young used to do. Monetary penalties for swearing went into the jar for Hailee. She said Jeff, Josh and Matt would daily fill it, and she did well.

Thank you for this. In the puzzle of the last 100 years of American Film, the Coen Brothers are definitely an important piece. And Westerns have a special place in my heart. They combine an alien landscape with the familiarity of the human experience, and that makes for the perfect escape from our lives. I wouldn’t want to live in these harsh times, but I envy how boundary free people could be if they wanted to be. Westerns, along with Jazz, are American art forms well worth preserving and contributing to and I’m SUPER happy you’re exploring them with us.

Good film, the epilogue gives some nice extra weight. It's much better technically than the original, but I think the original is actually kind of mid-tier John Wayne (his Oscar was more of a "lifetime achievement" award). Hailee is great as Mattie and Damon is much better as LaBoeuf. Jeff Bridges is a much, much better actor than Wayne, but I still think that, in his best roles, Wayne has one of the strongest screen presences in American movie history. For more info on the squabble btw Rooster and LaBoeuf over Quantrill's Raiders (early in the film), Ride with the Devil (1999) is a really good depiction of the guerilla warfare during the Civil War in Kansas and Missouri.

It’s a real pleasure watching you discover these great films— this, one of the best western tales ever written ( thank you Charles Portis). These characters are so real and perfectly portrayed in this production. That desperate scene of flight under the clear night sky is haunting. Thanks for choosing this film. (Also, don’t forget Gran Torino.)

Ok.... it turns out I wasn't ready for the scene where Blackie is shot!! :( I'm still not over Marley & Me!! They need to put a warning on these goddam things!!

A great film and reaction, Ames! After LaBoeuf kills "Lucky" Ned Pepper, Cogburn saves Mattie from the snake pit and jumps on Little Blackie with Mattie in his arms to ride to Fort Smith for help. I wish Cogburn would have thought to take the reins of Ned's uninjured horse along as a spare. That way, when Little Blackie started to falter they could switch over to Ned's horse and Little Blackie could have been released in time to be able to recover. Also Rooster wouldn't have had to carry Mattie in his arms for the last mile(s)... although the movie was much more dramatic the way it was written in the script. I just hated to see Little Blackie treated like that. What an amazing horse he was! I couldn't believe Mattie got him to swim that river with her on his back! R.I.P. Little Blackie.

the writing is just top notch! Please check out Hail, Cesar! another great movie because the writing's just crisp!
