"Fission is good, but nothing comes close to that staggeringly gigantic fusion reactor in the sky..." - Elon

- Optimus can now explore unseen spaces autonomously. It can locate and self navigate to the nearest charging station and plug itself in using its rear cameras. It can now pick up significant payloads, such as a 25 lb battery tray. Grouped together, Optimus bots can build a shared understanding of their surroundings. Optimus can walk up stairs, interact with people via AI, and can hand you different items upon request. These skills are learned by a single neural net running in real time on Optimus’ embedded computer.

- You can now submit your questions for the Tesla Q3 earnings call. The call is scheduled for week on the 23rd of October at 4:30 p.m. CST. Link to submit your question is in the Sources section.

- Tesla has installed their 60,000th Supercharger in Japan's Shizuoka Prefecture. Looks to be in Quicksilver. They also installed the country's 600th Supercharger covered in origami art. Pic by @tesla_yuddy.

- Tesla filed a patent application for a Data Synthesis for Autonomous Control Systems. "An autonomous control system generates synthetic data that reflect simulated environments. Specifically, the synthetic data is a representation of sensor data of the simulated environment from the perspective of one or more sensors. The system generates synthetic data by introducing one or more simulated modifications to sensor data captured by the sensors or by simulating the sensor data for a virtual environment." H/T Chansoo Byeon (@ByeonChansoo).

- Borja de Lis, of Aloha Solar, just completed the first-ever Powerwall 3 installation in the remote part of Hana, Hawaii. "This breakthrough project brings unmatched whole-home backup and energy resilience, perfect for the unique needs of Hana."

- Milan Kovac (milankovac) has been promoted to Vice President of Optimus.

- The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Omead Afshar will now oversee operations in North America and Europe as VP of Sales and Manufacturing. Senior executives in those two regions will now report to him. He has assumed some responsibilities formerly held by Tom Zhu.

- Paul Sutton, Centre Manager at McArthurGlen in London, posted pics if the newly installed V4 Superchargers plus the onsite do-it-yourself Demo Drive Model Y.

- Some more cryptic messages, this time from Tesla Thailand. 7 17... Anyone? Got one day to figure it out.

FLYOVERS:

  • Tesla Lithium Refinery: Joe Tegtmeyer (@JoeTegtmeyer), 17th of October, '24.

  • Giga Nevada Semi Pilot Plant: Zanegler (@HinrichsZane), 17th of October, '24. Eight new semis and what looks to be near 50 total.

  • Giga Texas: Jeff Roberts (@peterdog15), 16th of October, '24. Glass installation is about to resume on the southwest corner.

■ SPACEX:

- Drone ship A Shortfall of Gravitas returns to the Port Canaveral with Falcon 9 booster B1080 from Starlink mission 10-10. Pic by Jerry Pike (@JerryPikePhoto).

- Drone ship Of Course I Still Love You returns to the Port of Long Beach with Falcon 9 booster B1017.19 from Starlink mission 9-7. Pic by Matt Hartman (@ShorealoneFilms).

- Yesterday, a new Falcon 9 booster went vertical at the McGregor, Texas, Test Site.

- NASA announced they will use Crew Dragon for both the Crew-10 mission in February 2025, and the Crew-11 mission in July. Crew-10 will fly NASA astronauts Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers along with astronaut Takuya Onishi from the Japanese space agency JAXA and Roscosmos cosmonaut Kirill Peskov. The crew for the Crew-11 mission has not been announced yet. NASA was hoping to use Boeing's Starliner, but it is still not certified for flight.

- Yesterday, Brownsville, Texas, City Manager Helen Ramirez took this pic of the SpaceX Booth at the 4th Annual Careers & Coffee Job Expo. Per Helen, "We had a record breaking 3,200+ career seekers attend with 50+ companies!"

- danielle x (@lovemesomemusk) spotted the SpaceX Boeing 737 at LAX. "From what I know about the plane, it flies between LA and Starbase for employees to go back and forth. It also has 2 Starlink aero terminals installed on top." She is correct... 😉

- In the sources section I placed the link to SpaceX's lawsuit against the California Coastal Commission. It argues the state retaliated in violation of the First Amendment and that federal law preempts the commission's action.

- According to a bill signed by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, they are transforming the Alcântara base in Maranhão into a space launch hub and the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) is trying to attract SpaceX, specifically Falcon 9. Starlink was also highlighted in the military report as an innovative technology with great potential to support Brazilian missions. Brazil has created Alada, a state-owned aerospace company, as part of their effort. As doubtful as this is, thoughts of how X has been treated in Brazil makes me wonder if Elon would even consider this.

Countdown to 144 (96 - Falcon 9, 2 - Falcon Heavy, and 3 - Starship):

  • Launch 102! Thursday, 16th of October, at 7:53 p.m. ET, Falcon 9 Starlink 8-19 will launch from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral, Florida. The booster will land on a drone ship in the Atlantic Ocean.

  • Launch 103! Sunday, 20th of October, at 10:09 p.m. ET, Falcon 9 OneWeb 20 will launch from Space Launch Complex 4E (SLC-4E) at Vandenberg Space Force Base, California. This is a batch of 20 satellites for the OneWeb satellite constellation, intended to provide global Internet broadband service for individual consumers. The constellation is planned to have around 648 microsatellites around 150 kg each, operating in Ku-band from low Earth orbit. The booster will land at Landing Zone 4 (LZ-4) at Vandenberg.

  • Launch 104! Monday, 21st of October, at 6:40 p.m. ET, Falcon 9 Starlink 6-61 will launch from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral, Florida. The booster will land on a drone ship in the Atlantic Ocean.

■ THE BORING COMPANY: N/A... boring.

■ NEURALINK: N/A...

■ STARLINK:

- Governor of Maine Janet Mills announced the state is going to pay to subsidize Starlinks and service under a new program called Working Internet ASAP. The Maine Connectivity Authority plans to connect 9,000 homes and businesses that have no internet access. Per Mills, "Maine has more work to do to build out our broadband infrastructure – but by the end of this year, everyone in our state will have the opportunity to access a reliable connection."

- Today, SpaceX filed a request with the FCC to match their 2022 request and deploy up to 29,988 Starlinks. In 2022, the FCC only granted permission for up to 7,500.

- Elliott Aviation recently completed its first Starlink Aviation installation on a Beechcraft King Air 350 at the company’s Atlanta DeKalb-Peachtree Airport (KPDK) facility. Per Bill Forbes, VP of Avionics, "It is great working with a team that takes pride in every project they deliver. With Starlink, our customers can enjoy uninterrupted internet access from home, to the office, and now in the skies. This installation is a game-changer for business and leisure travelers alike."

- GIZ Nigeria and Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) announced the ECOWAS Peace and Security Architecture and Operations (EPSAO) project has officially provided 16 Starlink Kits to the ECOWAS Commission. They will be used to significantly enhance the Early Warning and Early Response (EWER) system across ECOWAS member states. They can now better coordinate with National Centers for Coordination of Response Mechanisms.

■ X:

- "Leaving X to go on X," by X's Chris Park (@chrisparkX).

- Per X's Mike (@cambridgemike), "The infra built by engineers at X (present and past) is world class. Incredibly reliable at X scale, often with minimal maintenance thanks to great runbooks, docs, monitoring, and alerts left from previous teams, not to mention exceptional design decisions.

- X London's Shayma Tai and Team held their first ever collab event with Tesla. "What better way to network than in a Tesla showroom followed by test drives."

Shayma is X's Lead Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) Events Manager. The above pics are from an event in Zambia of South Africa. Below is from the SAUDI NATIONAL DAY 2024 event.

- Per Bloomberg, the European Union has issued a warning to Elon that it plans to claim revenues from SpaceX, xAI, The Boring Company, and Neuralink when calculating potential fines for X under the EU's Digital Services Act. Tesla would be exempt from their calculation because it's publicly traded and not under Elon's full control. "In considering revenue from his other companies, the commission is essentially weighing whether Musk himself should be regarded as the entity to fine as opposed to X itself."

- We need X Merch, Linda (@lindayaX).

■ xAI:

- As I reported yesterday, team eXpect was the runner-up at xAI's Hackathon, earning $5,000 in API credits. In the above video, Ethan Shaotran (@EShaotran) explains eXpect, a X reply prediction model that uses Grok.

- According to Lohan Simpson (@Lohansimpson), xAI may soon release their new model from the recent Hackathon event in the API. Lohan also found that xAI will be giving us a Grok 2 Mini vision model. Follow Lohan and support his work.

■ ELON NEWS:

- Per Elon, "Currently, I have 3 talks scheduled in Pennsylvania, but will probably do half a dozen throughout the state."

- Per Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman, "In the business, a lot of surrogates really doesn't count for much. But Musk, it's undeniable that he's successful. He's the world's richest man, and he's been involved in a lot of important things, like SpaceX, or AI, and those things. And he has – he has a brand, and that's attractive to a demographic that we need to have, to win in Pennsylvania. And it's not even about his checkbook."
