When I started this page I was knee-deep in size-difference work. The feeling of being small in the presence of something large and (hopefully) peaceful. The main driver was this bear shaman, and I kept imagining her in conversation with Kalahari, who’s not especially small by most standards but ends up feeling dwarfed by comparison. And I love that dynamic with a creature who’s otherwise gentle but still impossible to ignore because of the space she occupies. Kalahari is always a gentleman even when hanging out naked with a spiritual guide, but in this case I imagined her offering something to drink that would erode some of the usual social guardrails. Nothing sinister, just something to empower his instincts. And I guess the result is a kind of flustered admiration that’s a little embarrassing, but equal parts validating.

Then there’s some experiments with hyena proportions that got a little silly in places, but all in service of feeling out their yeen-ness. There’s a special place in my heart for hyenas, probably because I saw so many of them in Kruger Park as a kid. At the time my understanding of them was shaded by their famous rivalry with lions, but as an adult I saw them more for what they actually are. Which is admittedly very cool and interesting. Later on I started appreciating them for what they actually are: social, intelligent, a little chaotic in structure. If foxes are “the dog that would be a cat”, hyenas are “the cat that would be a dog”.

Further down, there’s some skunk foot studies in 4- and 5-toed variants. I’m still not sure where I sit with toe count on skunks and mustelids, and right now it’s just on a case-by-case vibe check. Anyone opinions on this will be well received.

Oh yeah, and there’s a little self-portrait in the style of Bojack Horseman. That show really surprised me. I expected an irreverent adult comedy, but it ended up resonating in some profound ways. I mean, some of my favorite fiction does this, wrapping fragile observations about human sadness in a protective coating humor and irony. Sometimes that’s the only way those ideas can make it from one person to another. If it was less funny or more poignant I probably wouldn’t have cared as much as I did.

Anyway, I've got an otter boy in the works...

These look awesome! I can’t wait to see this otter boy you are designing! :D

Looks like you were inspired by Tyunre, perhaps? (The chicks w dicks, yes!) Love the fishermen setting the perfect example of casual, if not practical nudity. Clothing in this respect would just get in the way. Plus drying them out. Best to avoid, if possible! 😁

You absolutely are killing me with this page. Where to start? I LOVE the piece between Kalahari and the Shaman bear, but that's no surprise and you know it. "A little embarrassing, but equal parts validating" is exactly what's conveyed in that piece - I am assuming these sketches are what made it into that piece? (I ask, because they look a little more...like your modern work?) Hyenas - Great shapes. And you're unafraid to try out anatomy with them. An occasional favorite of mine that I love to see! More of your seals with their great builds and shapes. Just so soft, but there's a little more about them that you convey here. (The selfie pose is, to me, equal parts soft, inviting, and somewhat prickly!) Skunks! My original fandom favorite. I would absolutely love to see what you do with them. How you allow the animal anatomy to inform the biped anatomy in your work - and how you seem to love letting those bipeds play with the parts that make them animals - in this case, the huge, fluffy tail of a skunk. If nothing else, the exploration of form is a reason to do a few more. Please say there will be more. :D And....Bojack. I'm with you. What I expected was not what I got. I wasn't expecting to actually learn something about myself through a character. (In my case, Todd.) I have not finished the series as it was becoming a bit too painful and close to some realities for me, but perhaps it's time to do a re-watch. Great post, please do keep sharing! I love all that you share, even if I'm a little quiet. :)

I'm now imagining the seal and the otter guy exchanging nudes since they are here both with their phones, that's why he's a little excited 😛. She's doing a great job distracting him from his work! And yeah, you used to do more hyenas. I appreciate the experimentation with proportions. Total FiFi vibes in the bottom right 😀.

I really like all of these. But three otter boys looks interesting) one of them is aroused looking something)

I always wondered a bit about the story behind the Bojack avatar image, whether it was a commissioned piece or yours! Very neat and very well done, I must say! Lots of feets and pawbs here too... Never was nor am a feet person (except for grabby rodent peets), but it really is amazing how much personality and even emotion can be added to a character piece from something as seemingly inane as foot and toe orientation! As for the toe count discussion, I usually go by claw count... I also tend to draw my characters with similar feet as their animal counterparts because I like how it looks aesthetically, but I say five toes! I used to be a three finger drawer myself for a while, but I've since adopted four fingers again. Minds change over time I guess! Intrigued a bit on the backstoru behind what I'm assuming is a hyena or dhole on the middle left there? [EDIT: Somehow I overlooked your mention of them in the descript... Nevermind haha] Love getting to peek inside your process with these!

Kalahari

The only backstory I have for the hyenas is that I want to draw some more of that :) This was a sort of playful exploration of their body types, leaning into the round belly and the pseudopenis. I guess the rounded thighs are my own invention... Rodents are good candidates for the 5-toe treatment. Unless they're really cartoony, I think it looks pretty natural on them, especially with their fairly slim digits.

Kalahari

A scene was evolving here, and I wish I kept with it. This'll have to come up again in some form or another.

Kalahari

That's a super good catch, and it fits them too well... seals and otters share a lot of turf (or surf I guess). Not hard to imagine them sharing a few pics during the day :) I think Fifi has to be the one who inspired most of the 90s furries fascination with skunks haha.

Kalahari

These are indeed the earliest sketches for the Kalahari and shaman pieces! Because I transferred them to paper and finished them in marker and watercolor, I think a lot of the subtlety of the sketch was lost. Whenever I got back to doing more serious pieces in watercolor I want to be sure it doesn't fall victim to that same game of telephone :P I think a lot of 90s furries cut their teeth on skunks (if I can use the phrase), and for good reason. Their luxurious tails, and the bits of delicate pink on their otherwise pretty stark fur. I love them, but they rarely seem to make it into finished pieces. Usually just waiting in the wing. Something I oughta correct! Oh man... Bojack got very heavy as it went on and some of it hit me squarely in the soul. The very end of season 5 (between the scene and the song, if you haven't seen it yet) was resonant in a way I might never experience again from a tv show. Always good to hear your thoughts, whenever you feel like offering them!

Kalahari

Not Tyunre exactly, but I really dig his work! Getting in and out of the water benefits a lot from forgoing clothes altogether -- certainly for species that have a natural adaptation to it. So I can see aquatic mammals being pretty fond of nudism as a rule.

Kalahari

I know I've got a collection of otter boys at this point, most of them just one-offs... hopefully this one holds up!

Admiral Storm

I hope to see more of them when you have them completed! Always enjoy seeing your artwork
