READING ORDER for FIGHT NIGHT:
Fight Night (Oscar)
Fight Night - Part One (Daisy Calloway)
Fight Night - Part Two (Daisy Calloway)
We highly recommend to read this after reading Daisy Calloway's fight night chapters.
I NEED SOME FUCKING ANSWERS. I’m going out of my fucking mind. The hottest rage simmers beneath my blood. Boiling inside me, and I don’t even know who I’m angry at yet.
Winona is hurt. Emotionally hurt. I can see it all over her like Daisy can. Someone hurt our daughter, and I want to fucking kill them.
Daisy guides Winona to the indoor basketball court in the hotel suite. Goldi, her golden retriever, dutifully at her side. She’s already in tears—our daughter.
I can’t get over how she wants Dais to explain to me what happened. That she doesn’t even want to tell me herself. So it’s bad. It has to be fucking terrible.
I’m not going to react well. Fucking fuck. I’m not reacting well right now, and I have such little information. Now it’s just me, Garrison, Willow, and Vada left in the living room. Lily and Lo are at the hot tub talking with Audrey and Kinney.
I text Connor while Vada is rooted in place. She’s unable to go to the game room because she’s pissed too.
About what, I don’t fucking know.
“Did something happen at school?” Willow asks her daughter gently. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine,” Vada says from her chest. “I’m totally fucking fine, Mom. It’s just…ughhh.” She rotates three-sixty degrees, then rests her hands on her hips, then crosses her arms, then shrugs tightly. “It’s whatever.”
“It’s not whatever,” Garrison says. “It’s something. If you know anything, Vada, about Ben or Winona—”
“It’s their shit, Dad. It’s not my place.” My niece’s eyes ping to me.
I grind my jaw and run a hotter hand through my hair. “Does she even have cramps, Vada? Was that the fucking truth?” Audrey said they all did jello shots to help with Winona’s cramps tonight, but I’m getting the sense there is way more to the story.
Vada groans, slinging her head back. “No, okay.” Her voice drops to a hushed level. “Audrey and Kin could tell Winona was off tonight, and Nona didn’t want to worry them. So she made up this stupid excuse, and they bought it. So when Audrey proposed we all do shots together to make Nona feel better, we kind of had to.”
“You can say no,” Garrison tells her.
“It was in solidarity or whatever,” Vada says quickly. “I couldn’t say no if Winona was playing along.”
“Oh my God.” Garrison rubs his face.
“Mom,” Vada whines to my sister.
“We’re just trying to figure out what’s going on,” Willow says. “We know you’re trying to be a good friend.”
Garrison adds, “But sometimes that means doing the hard thing and speaking up about your friends when they’re in trouble or doing something that’s not right.”
“Ben would’ve done what was right tonight—I bet he would’ve done so much more if she told him sooner. But she, ugh, she wouldn’t tell him! And he wouldn’t fucking listen to me. But he’s the only one who’s ever been able to shut that cunty dick up—”
“Vada,” Garrison says.
“That’s what he is, Dad! He’s a fucking sick cunt.” Angry tears prick her eyes. “You want these for cursing? Then fucking take them. Take them!” She rips the shoelace bracelets off her wrists. Laces from all her BMX races she’s won.
“Stopstopstop,” Garrison whispers quickly. He walks into her emotion and immediately hugs her. She starts crying, and I have to leave.
I can’t be here. I want to be with my wife and daughter, but I’m trying to do what she asked. So I end up on the balcony, my arms on the railing as I check my texts.
Connor isn’t answering any messages. He’s either on a plane without service or he’s dealing with too many children to respond to me.
I hear the sliding glass doors whoosh open. I don’t turn to see who comes out because he’s already saying, “Don’t jump.”
Lo sidles beside me but puts a healthy distance between himself and the edge. “It’s a joke. You can laugh or…not.” He sees my searing eyes. “Is Winona…?”
I shake my head, my tensed muscles screaming with the movement. I open my mouth to tell him something, but words knot in my throat. I somehow manage to sink into a patio chair. Bowing forward, I feel utterly fucking sick.
What Vada was alluding to is one of my worst fucking nightmares, and I blocked out her words but they’re slamming back into me. That’s what he is, Dad! He’s a fucking sick cunt.
He?
A guy did something to Winona.
“Ryke?” Lo crouches in front of me. My little brother. I can barely see him with the burning, raging film in my eyes.
I lace my hands on my head, trying to breathe. “I…” I didn’t protect her. I didn’t protect my youngest daughter from…
It hits me. “It’s that kid…in the neighborhood,” I choke out. It has to be. He chased her in our own fucking backyard with a group of boys at one point, a dumb teenage “prank” that led me to almost putting a fist in his father’s face on their front porch steps.
Connor—yes, fucking Connor, went with me to confront his parents. Because I asked him to. Because I didn’t trust myself speaking to that teenager’s dad. I knew if I asked Lo to come along, he’d be as short-fused, and it’d only set me off more. And Daisy wouldn’t be able to restrain me. Rose would’ve provoked me to actually hit him, and Lily—just no.
So that left Connor.
The dad was a fucking prick. He acted like I was overreacting. Like I was making a mountain out of a molehill. He laughed and said, “You were teenagers once. It’s harmless.”
“I never chased a girl through the fucking woods to scare the shit out of her. You can’t tell me that’s okay. There were three—four of them? Against both my daughters—no. That’s not fucking harmless.”
“According to my son, your daughters chased them—”
I got in his face.
Connor pulled me backward, then emphasized to him the importance of his kid not entering our private property. This would be the only warning before we involved the police, and I remember feeling Connor’s palpable irritation when we left their front porch.
“He’s going to be a problem,” he said, and I wondered if he knew it’d morph into a greater issue because that kid’s father was going to do jackshit to discipline him. To teach him right from fucking wrong.
I also remember telling Connor, “You should’ve let me hit him.”
I wish he would’ve. Right now, all I want to do is strangle the dad because I can’t hurt a teenager.
“Which neighborhood kid?” Lo asks, still squatting in front of me. His jaw sharpens, eyes narrowed into hot pinpoints, and his lethal features look as murderous as I fucking feel.
“The…Townsends. Tate Townsend, I think.” I shake my head over and over, my neck aching as my muscles sear. “He used to fucking harass Winona at Dalton. He put bikini photos in her locker. He made fucking lewd comments to her.” I scrape my hand over my mouth. “She reported him. The administration….slapped him on the fucking wrist. Said he stopped. Winona said…” I shake my head again and again, an acidic ball building in the back of my throat. “She said it ended, Lo.” I throw up my hand, realizing maybe my daughter lied.
Maybe she’s been suffering for…I don’t know how long? Thinking she could handle it herself.
I should’ve protected her. “I should’ve pulled her out of school—”
“He should’ve been expelled,” Lo snaps.
“We tried that to no fucking avail.”
“What did he do?” Lo asks more quietly.
“I don’t fucking know.” I stretch a heated hand toward the door. “Winona won’t tell me. But what could possibly be so fucking bad, Lo, that my own daughter doesn’t want to tell me…?” My voice tapers out as this violent rage fists my lungs. I stare him dead in the eyes because he’s recently been through a situation where he thought his daughter was… “If she was…” I swallow hard, unable to even say the fucking word. “You’re going to have to handcuff me, sedate me, do something, because I will fucking kill his father. If his kid forced himself on her, I will kill him—”
“Stop.” He grips my knees and pushes off to a stance. “You’re going to go out of your goddamn mind if you keep theorizing the worst-case scenario, and you’re making me start to go out of mine.”
“Vada was alluding…” I trail off at a sudden thought. “Ben.” I shoot to my feet, and Lo puts his hands on my chest.
“Ryke—”
“Lo, Ben knows him.” I breathe hot breaths through my nose. “That’s why he left Vegas. He’s going to go find him.” He’s going to fucking kill someone tonight—because that’s what I am seconds away from doing in this stark, haunting moment. Hurting. Eviscerating the person who harmed my daughter. The guy who harmed a girl. “We need to find Ben.”
“Connor and Rose will find him,” Lo assures. “You know those two would scour the entire planet for him. They’ll find him. You need to go talk to your wife before we both commit murder.”
Maybe he’s right. I can’t sit here and wait with these thoughts.
I will put a hole through the wall. This might not be as fucking horrible as I think. Even Lo says, “You overreact, bro. This could be about a million other goddamn things. It might not be that.”
I need to find Daisy.
And we're back! Thank you all so much for your patience this month. It really has been the hardest deadline month of our careers, so we're incredibly grateful for you all bearing with us. Returning to Ryke's POV during this moment was so painful, but also a really needed insight into everything happening. We love writing him! We hope you enjoyed Part 3...and Part 4 is just on the horizon. It will be dropping TONIGHT. So keep on the lookout!
