All About Charlie Cobalt in Burn Bright

December's poll has closed, and the results are in! We'll be discussing Charlie Cobalt's appearances and dynamics in Burn Bright. He has a lot of moments, so we're excited to dig into all of those! We don't answer things "off-page" since those are spoilers, but we'll be doing a character dissection of sorts to take a deeper look at who Charlie is! We love him and all that he brings to the Cobalt fam, so we can't wait to dig in!

In the Cobalt Civil War bonus, Charlie is furious at Eliot and Tom for putting a tracker on his phone, even though Eliot explains they did it out of concern since he disappears so often. In Burn Bright, Charlie does the exact same thing to Ben. Does he feel bad in doing so? Does he recognize that this is a hypocritical thing to do, but just not care?

In the latest bonus Hockey with the cobalts, you can see that Charlie went to the locker room to get away from Harriet and Bens relationship and Beckett was there. How much has Charlie shared with Beckett in wanting to fall in love? Was Beckett aware that's why he left the area or he just knew something was wrong and wanted to be there for Charlie ? Did Charlie tell him why he left?

After Harriet offed to blow him, Charlie had a change of attitude towards Ben. He was way less harsh on him than before. And I'd like to know if it had anything to do with Harriet and what happened, or if he started to see there was more to Ben than he thought, or maybe it was Beckett asking him to play nice so Ben wanted to stay in NY? How does Charlie feel about Beckett’s flirty behavior with Joanna considering she’s his bodyguards sister? Is he concerned that if they hook up it may have a negative impact on his relationship with Oscar?

In BB, we see that Charlie is the only one able to get Beckett out of an OCD loop, specifically the scene in the kitchen when Ben witnessed Beckett spiraling. Charlie always rushes to help Beckett with extreme urgency. Charlie obviously/definitely helps Ben through his OCD but it's not with the same kind of urgency (excluding finding Ben in Alaska). Is it because Charlie is still coming to terms with the fact that Ben might need him in the same way that Beckett does or is it simply because he is closer to Beckett? PS: I also have OCD (kind of similar to Beckett's) and oftentimes my sister is the only one able to get me out of a loop and calm me down. So, I relate to Beckett and Ben on some level. 🫶

i think you’ve mentioned how you wanted to write the brothers’ povs on patreon but thought that would turned down the hype but like as of now you’re considering again, so i was wondering if you are still interested in this would you publish bonus scenes when they were little and still living with their parents (like not in bb timeline) since that would work for you better and not limit you bc there are scenes that ben talks about in bb about their childhood etc. and in charlie’s case this could be when he won the WND? Is the transparency that he has with Beckett equal to what he’ll have with Roxanne, or will Roxanne some how reach a part of him that even Beckett is unable to touch? Is it the same for Beckett?

And an add on question: Would you say he considers Roxanne an objectively good dancer also? Or would you guys say she's close to Beckett, Leo, and Beth Anne's levels? I feel like the first part is hard to answer because Charlie isn't as objective as Connor but I'm curious

I am a big fan of all the scenes with Harriet and Charlie and I wondered how much Charlie actually knows about Harriets past? He mentioned it a few times (also in the breakfast bonus scene) and kind of motivates her to go to therapy but does he know a little bit more about the things that happenend to her or does he just assume/interprets Harriets behaviour? BUT… I was thinking about the met gala the other day and I started thinking about what the Cobalts might do/wear etc. and I couldn’t stop thinking about the fact that Charlie would purposely where something entirely off theme and like end up going viral for it. I’m curious about what shifts internally for him in each scenario, especially considering his longing for emotional intimacy and his complicated history with both Moffy and Ben. I’ve always found it fascinating that the two people Charlie has clashed with the most in his family also happen to be the first love stories of their respective series. And even though it clearly hurts him that he hasn’t found his person yet (Roxanne baby, your time is coming 🩰❤️‍🩹), he’s never been outwardly malicious about love. He genuinely appreciates it. He can be happy that the people around him have found a deep connection while still mourning the belief that there’s no one out there for him. Or, if there is, they wouldn’t “deserve” to have their life tied to his.

Marrow and Roxlie weren’t organic pairings so much as intentionally built to fit these two unique characters. I was wondering — is that something Charlie actually wants, or did it just kind of happen because it was expected? In Burn Bright, we see multiple moments where Charlie steps in to calm Beckett during emotional spirals or breakdowns, carrying the weight of that responsibility on his own shoulders. It makes me wonder: as Beckett’s twin, does Charlie genuinely feel it’s his duty to constantly look after him and be the one who steadies him? Or, on the harder days, does he question whether he’s actually helping—or unintentionally enabling him by always stepping in before Beckett can process things on his own?

(also sidenote but i really love listening to your podcasts while working, so this is me trying to understand charlie through his interests). - what type of music charlie usually listens to? is he like ben and tom (and connor 😄) who likes punk and rock? or does he like... everything? songs (or pieces of music) from different languages, different eras, different culture? ‐- another question (if you can answer): who is his favorite composer? - with books, we know that he likes james joyce, shakespeare and significant french writers but, do you guys think charlie will like contemporary literary authors like elena ferrante, sally rooney, claire keegan, jhumpa lahiri? or is he usually the type to lean into 20th century novels and classics? (i must knowwwww if he likes james baldwin ahaha) - does charlie have a favorite ballet dancer? except from his brother and his loml, ofc. like if i were to imagine roxy's dancing, i can see her in nina kaptsova—very soft, gentle, and verrryyy musical! -- also did he alr watch every swan lake version there is? I wanted to ask about the scene at The End Of The World where Eliot steps in to protect Harriet and Charlie is very relaxed and doesn’t even react to Eliot punching the guy. Is that because he knows Eliot wouldn’t let anything happen to him or is that because he doesn’t care IF anything were to happen? 🫶🏻 Also side note Rihanna’s song 🎵 Love on the Brain is so Charlie and Roxanne coded to me ❤️‍🩹

My second question is related to the imagery of Beckett and Charlie being two sides of the same coin. How Beckett is linked to being an angel 🪽 and Charlie a devil 😈and how depending on the POV that might change. Also Beckett was described as being pure steel inside and calm ont he outside while I think Charlie is the opposite. Is that something that you envisioned from the start or did the characters just naturally grow into that dynamic. It just makes their bond so deep and interesting 🩶

The first being can you please tell us what was going what was going through Charlie’s head when a very drunk Eliot was boping him on the nose. This scene lives rent free in my head and I need to know what Charlie was thinking and how many bops Eliot was able to get in! Also would love to know what cane Charlie typically brings out, if it’s a gaudy one that his brothers bought him or a more classic style? Final question but could you talk a bit more about the dynamic between Charlie and Eliot questioning Harriet about Bens finances at the bar. Their relationship was so interesting to me here and how they played off of each other to get Harriet to open up!

Kind of unrelated but do you plan on doing more language translations in the future as you write other characters who are fluent in other languages or will it be more like (enter English words here) but said in (blank language)? Example: Hi, he said in Spanish vs Hola, he said, which means hi in Spanish. Is this something that Beckett deliberately didn’t tell Charlie because Charlie’s interest in Roxanne is very obvious to Beckett? Does Charlie realize how obvious his interest in her is? Because in the Bonus scene he changed the topic pretty quickly after she was mentioned.
