All About Charlie Cobalt in Silver Sweet

Another super close race! This time between Charlie and Beckett. The results are in, and we'll be discussing all things Charlie from Silver Sweet in this month's podcast! We love his storyline in Tom's book, and we can't wait to talk more about all the Charlie moments scattered throughout Silver Sweet and his relationship with Tom and Phoenix. Plus, we also love reading all your Charlie questions, and we're both excited to answer them on the pod for September -- Charlie's birthday month!

Early on in the book, Tom describes the type of girls he notices his brothers bring around. For Eliot, he says “Eliot has a habit of choosing stage-five clingers”. And then proceeds to say that a girl tried to do their laundry the morning after. Is there something you guys imagine Charlie has dealt with regarding a girl he’s had over that makes you guys giggle (since basically every interaction we’ve seen a girl have with him is a non giggling matter 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂)

It was rlly interesting going from Ben’s pov of Charlie in BB to Tom’s in SS and seeing how differently the brothers understand Charlie. Ben seems to struggle to look past the ways Charlie hurts him, whereas Tom can recognize that Charlie’s intelligence and the way his mind works may actually be part of what he struggles with. When Tom says: “But it’s hard to say I don’t excuse our oldest brother. When Charlie aims for the jugular like he’s hoping to be stabbed back, the first thing I think is, his mind seems like a prison he’s trying to escape. And I end up just thanking the gene pool lottery that I don’t have an IQ comparable to our dad’s.” Obviously Charlie’s intelligence is the root of a lot of his frustration, but does Charlie ever genuinely wish his mind worked differently, or is the frustration more about feeling like no one around him can fully understand what it’s like to live inside his head?

You guys mentioned that one of the main reasons why Charlie is more bothered by Benriet vs st cobalt is because Benriet has more of the love Charlie craves. I’m curious if you guys would be willing to share a piece of media you think Charlie would have looked at and been like “I want that”. Like maybe he was watching xyz show and saw xyz scene etc etc.

Charlie pushed thatcher (and jane joined) to answer questions about himself and his relationship, even forcing him to eat rabbit hearts in Jane’s books. In Tom’s book, phoenix and tom similarly hid part of their relationship from Tom’s brothers including Charlie and yet they never gave him as hard of a time as they gave thatcher. Was this because you didn’t have narrative time to introduce thatcher within the cobalt empire series?

Or is this also maybe tied to his masochistic tendencies?

during the WND when Audrey says she’ll stay in the dorms, Charlie says something along the lines of great do that. Would he actually have approved of/been okay with her staying in the dorms?

In the cobalt ritual bonus scene, Ben asks Beckett something along the lines of “do you think romance is a disease just like Charlie thinks friendship is one?” And in the escape room scene (I think or at least somewhere in BB) Charlie says by my definition of friend you only have 1 and points at Harriet. Does this mean that Charlie only considers friendship in the romantic sense to be worthwhile to him or possibly the only kind of friendship he is capable of cultivating outside that of his family and Oscar ?

An observation: when Charlie tugs his own hair out of frustration from his own thoughts or irritation from external factors it draws a stark contrast to the scenes in the winter break bonus scene and hot tub scene specifically where Harriet is running her fingers affectionately through Ben’s hair. I just really want someone to comfort Charlie that way cuz my guy is desperate for that kind of affection clearly😭🫰🏻

Yay!! I love Charlie! 1. How would Charlie compare Harriet and Phoenix? What are traits they share that he likes/dislikes? What are some differences in their characters that make him closer to Phoenix? 2. Could you share some insight into your decision to make Phoenix closest to Charlie/Beckett? I really appreciated you didn’t go with the ‘obvious’ choice of making him closest to Eliot! 3. What were Charlie’s thoughts on Harriet’s mother coming to their apartment? I know you can’t spoil, but could you reveal if he was really as callous/unperturbed as he came across on the phone? 4. What was your favourite Charlie scene from SS? And maybe super spoilery but is there a big difference in him in SS vs. LL? 5. Was it hard for Charlie to choose to go on tour with Tom rather than stay at home for Ben? Is this something he had to deliberate with Beckett? How did he keep tabs on Ben while he was away, or was he less concerned about him by this time? 6. Is Charlie’s go-to McDonald’s order a filet-o-fish? Does he eat fast food often? 7. My biggest reach: could you give us a little nugget on why Roxanne was so adamantly against speaking to Charlie when Tom suggested it?

So excited! Maybe this has been asked already, but can you talk a bit more about the scene with Charlie and Phoenix and the random girl. It reminded me a lot of a similar scene in BB in terms of not respecting boundaries. Do you think their behavior is because they think they know Charlie and because of that they have access to him or are entitled to him? Or do you think it is something else ? Does this happen a lot (Charlie seemed completely desensitized to it)?

We know that Charlie is great with kids and is Maeve’s favorite uncle. At this point in the timeline, does he also have a special bond with Ripley and Cassidy? Is he the closest of all Maximoff’s cousins (aside from Jane) to them? Does he ever babysit them if other Hales are unable to?

By the end of SS Luna and Xander have been living in Charlie’s building for a year and a half. At this point does he enjoy having Luna nearby to hangout with, since he is closer to her than most of his other cousins? Or does he see the Hales as more of a burden that he’s responsible for keeping safe?

We know that Charlie goes to fundraiser events at the ballet to support Beckett (as seen in chapter 57). We also know that he’s not friends with anyone at the ballet. He’s also not hanging out with Beckett all night since he’s working. So what does Charlie actually do at these events?

Can we assume that there’s something that occurred out of the scene that Beckett probably told Charlie about that could have lead Charlie to make an educated guess that most likely Leo was the one contacting Tom in that instance and not RJ?

“The city might contain millions and stretch for miles, but it’s not big enough that I haven’t run into Charlie reading at the Ramble by the stream. He has spots. Routines.” After observing Charlie from the POV of his siblings we come to see that even though he’s notorious for being the “ Houdini” of the family he’s always on the periphery of his siblings’ lives especially when it is evident they are struggling in some way and may need to be helped. Can we deduce based on this that his routines and his spots are strategic to allow him to be within reach to the people he cares about without making them feel like he’s crowding them or invading their space? He also says this in the earlier chapters in Tom’s pov in reference to making himself scarce during the burn bright period so as not to “provoke Ben to punch a wall”

We’ve only experienced Charlie from someone else’s perspective. How different is the Charlie inside his own head from the Charlie everyone else sees?

When Charlie says something harsh, how often is what he says different from what he actually feels?

“There is only one aimless brother in our apartment. I mean, I am sure there are goals inside Charlie’s genius brain, but he hasn’t shared them with us. Other than the goal of disappearing from vital obligations. Which he’s not achieving as much anymore. Which makes him very goalless.” If Charlie’s previous goal of disappearing from vital obligations is gone, can we assume his new goal is to make himself more present in his siblings’ lives? This is showing so much growth in Charlie’s character since the like us series when he was begging Moffy and Jane to move to NY when Elliott and Tom we’re moving to NY and discussions of when Luna was considering to as well. Does this indicate he is bearing more responsibility and maybe off scene strengthened his relationship with Moffy as he can now relate to him more as responsible eldest brother ?

How’s Charlie’s relationship like with Harriet during the timeline?

Charlie and Beckett’s entrance into the club scene was one of my favorite parts of the book. I could see Charlie coming down the stairs, and Beckett appearing in the strobe lights, almost like I was watching a movie. One of my favorite aspects of that part was that Phoenix had no idea who Charlie was, but was able to deduce that he was Tom’s brother just because he looks so much like tom. Other than their hair color, what about Charlie’s appliance clued Phoenix in?

Is Charlie the only brother that promised not to fraternize with becketts coworkers? If he is, was the promise made after Beckett realized he liked Roxy? Why else would only Charlie have to promise when I feel like Eliot is much more likely to hook up with one of them.

I'd love a LL tease hehe. In BB, through Ben's eyes we got to see a version of charlie that was harsher and less enjoyable as we could feel how Ben did not find amusement in his comments. But in SS we got so see a much funnier side of him, Tom let almost every comment roll of his back and fired back which led to pretty fun interactions. I want to know if in LL, through Audrey's eyes, what side of Charlie would you say we're getting?

In ss tom mentions that charlie has had to take paternity tests. We also saw in clu that a girl was trying to claim he was the father. I was wondering if we could get a rough timeline on the first time this happened and how long its being going on. The way they deal with it? I guess reactions, thoughts and feelings would be better experienced in the series or bonus, but can you share any details on the common knowledge stuff tom mentions in ss. I'm assuming this and the precautions he has to take is why connor didn't give him the safe sex chat in the hot tub scene. Can we assume this significantly affects his dating life/ desensitization to sexual advances?

Charlie is always perceived as this agitated, enigma/ genius. So my favorite things to see is when he is doing something really normal or mundane. That scene in the like us books of him playing catan and asking for sheep for example or anytime we get a genuine smile out of him. Do you have any favorite Charlie small moments like that?

Somewhat a Charlie question: will we ever see a storyline of the siblings not speaking for a long period of time? Truthfully, if I was Audrey I would’ve been way more upset of what he said at dinner in SS but I know typically your books are always HEA, however I could totally see a storyline of Audrey “cutting” ties with Charlie even if it was a small character arc, would that be a possibility? (If that isn’t too spoilery)

I’ve always wondered Charlie’s love language and would it be different with Roxanne than is siblings, because i think Charlie shows he cares through actions and showing up because he would prefer to be somewhere else. Do you think this is true from what we see of him through silver sweet? Charlie would sooo roll his eyes at this question hahaha

In the scene when Ben is missing at the end of SS and Tom has his breakdown, Charlie is the one to tell Tom he has unresolved trauma from the time Ben left. Did Charlie always suspect this? I assume he was clued in a little with the amount of times through SS that Tom was nervous/freaked out he might drive Ben away but when did Charlie decide it was trauma instead of just temporary anxiety/worry? Tom states Eliot can often fool Audrey and Ben that he can sometimes read when in reality he can’t. Obviously Charlie knows he can’t as he filmed the play for him. But is Charlie aware Eliot pretends he can? I’m assuming also yes and if so I’m honestly surprised Charlie hasn’t bursted that bubble and pointed it out. It made me think of the bonus scene where Charlie and Moffy talk about how their parents had “encountered real evil, but the worst kind of evil was the one that was partly good,” referring to their grandparents. Charlie talks about how the way their parents were raised “caused trauma on an entire lineage,” and how Connor and Lo raising their own families was “purely in contrast to how they were raised.” I LOVE this bonus and the insight it gives into how Charlie thinks, especially how he perceives Connor. That generational trauma also affects Harriet, so I’d love to know whether Charlie feels for her in that sense. But then he’s so rude to Harriet in the hot tub bonus, and aloof and offensive when Tom calls him on the plane. I’d just love a little more insight into how Charlie actually feels about Harriet and what their relationship is like now.

I assume that Beckett and Charlie went to the club together, and that Beckett may have also had his friends with him, but we know that Charlie doesn’t really interact with Beckett’s friends. So other than hang out with Oscar who is obligated to be there, what does charlie actually do on these types of nights at the club?

In most of SS Charlie seemed less bitchy than in BB. Tom enjoys bantering with him and Phoenix empathizes saying he too can come off as bitchy to people. So when we got to the part where everyone is on the lawn of the Honor’s House at the end of SS this part really stood out to me: “Forgot your shoes and your brain?” Charlie quips. Ben glares. “Fuck you, Charlie.” It immediately reminded me that Ben reacts very differently to Charlie than Tom does. I now realize that this isn’t a question 😂…but I just wanted to point out that I love how the POV you’re in really matters for things like this.

I had a question about chapter 41 to be specific about Charlie. Before the release there were a lot of questions about what type of girls Charlie hooks up with and you guys said that we see that in SS. There were two scenes that highlighted this, two scenes that were very heavy. The first one is on chapter 9 where Charlie tells tom that the reason the girl he brought over leaved so fast was be she tried to push his cum inside of her, which is NOT OKAY AT ALL. Then in chapter 41 we see a random girl hug him from behind and then when he ignored her she hugged him tighter and touched him inappropriately (hands below the waistband). Where these the girls that you guys were referring to? We obviously haven't seen how the hook up with the first girl started but I truly believe that Charlie, as he has gotten older, has experienced less people respecting boundaries. I would be happy to hear your guyses thought process
