THE EXCERPT

“Secondly,” she says. “I made him red velvet cookies. He said red velvet is his favorite.”

My laugh sounds sharper. “Didn’t even have to form a hypothesis and test your theories to figure that out, huh? He just gave it to you?”

“Some men are easy that way,” she says, defiant and hot. Too fucking hot. “Others more difficult, incorrigible, heart-shrunken.”

“I’m sorry my heart isn’t on a silver platter for you to consume, princess.”

“I’m sorry you think I want it on a silver platter when I’d be perfectly fine crushing it in my hand.”

I grind my molars, but this feeling will not go away. I rip my gaze off hers to cool off. Do not keep going with her. I can’t keep going in this direction. “Let’s talk Strauss.” I nod to her laptop. “What do you want to know?”

She shuts her computer. “What are your Valentine’s plans?”

“Talking about Strauss with you.”

“After that. Tonight.”
