Weekly Recap

Happy Friday, magical & heroic beauties! We're busy finishing up the extra bonus and prepping some podcasts for next week. We're also writing Nobody Like Us, and it's been so much fun just to jump straight into it after finishing Unlucky Like Us. Last time with Misfits we had to take a bit of a break to work on Dishonestly Yours, so this has been a different experience already. We LOVE Luna and Donnelly so much that we're just glad we can spend more time with them before we have to say goodbye. Aw, cue the sappy tears! It honestly hasn't hit us yet that this is their last book. We're going to be piles of mush by the end of this. Luckily, we're not there yet, so we're just in the "fun stages" before the ultimate farewell.

We hope you all have been having a great month so far. August is shaping up to be pretty awesome for us. We are obsessed with the main bonus this month, and we hope you all enjoyed being back in Maximoff's head. 😊

💜 EVENT TOMORROW: August 19th, Bookstore Romance Day 2023, hosted by Reads & Company- Phoenixville, PA

Romance authors will be in attendance from 12-4 pm to sign books as readers come by, much like a festival-feel rather than a traditional author event. The street is shut down during the event, so it'll be super cool! Becca will be there to sign books and pass out bookplates with both of our signatures. (Krista can't make the event due to a prior obligation, but I am going to be there and channeling my twinnie's spirit! Hopefully some of you can make it out!)

I’m really excited for more of Luna and Harriet!! :D I’d love to see more Luna + Charlie, too, and of course any Girl Squad cameos 💖 I’m REALLY hoping for a real, proper conversation between Donnelly and Beckett - that’s one of my most anticipated things for NLU so I’m hoping that happens. Plus I really want to see more of Quinn now that he’s back on Luna’s detail; I really enjoyed watching them interact in the Shake Shack bonus scene. There’s also the new dynamic of Quinn and Frog working so closely together than I’m excited to see! And last but not least, the other two thirds of the Troublemakers!

Hii! Happy Friday everyone 🩷 I loved ULU soooo much !! 🤩 it was such an unexpected plot twist and the cliffhanger that it ends on is so cool and I can’t wait to see how it plays out. (Sorry a bit of a belated and unsolicited review, but lots of life things recently and I still wanted to share my excitement !!) ✨ That being said, we all have our favorite characters and one of them for me is Beckett. I was so pleased with the amount of page time he had in ULU (great balance for a secondary character imo) and I loved the little tidbits of tension and possesiveness he showed over Donnelly. I can’t wait to see more of that in NLU and see that tension boil over and hopefully the situation between them be resolved.. or you know, maybe not? Maybe you want him to keep simmering in quiet frustration until he has his meltdown in his own pov over the much-anticipated Cobalt empire series.

I'm really hoping to see Donnelly & Beckett's friendship regrow. I'm curious about Donnelly's mom and if/how she is connected to O'Malley. The "shady ass journalist" who was talking to Donnelly's family. How do they factor in to the story? Who is it?!? I'm super hoping Rose and Connor warm up to Donnelly. It breaks my heart that any Cobalt would be against him when he has so much love for them. Ultimately though, I'm just really looking forward to Lunnelly getting their HEA. They've been through so much that I just want to see them get the long term happiness they deserve

Please please please more Beckett, I need to see him resolve the issues with Donelly because it's KILLING ME. Also love Oscar and Jack so I always get excited when they appear (yale boys scenes would be a plus). And of course my fav trio, more of Tom, Eliot and Luna pleaseeee. I loved how welcoming they were towards Donelly so I would love to see the dynamics of those four explored in the book :))

I’m just thrilled for NLU, so I have lots of characters I’m looking forward to: Donnelly - who is his mom? Will his trouble with the Cobalts be resolved? How will his found family grow? Luna - will she get her memories back? Who are the strange texts/phone calls from? Will the world ever accept her tentacle romance? How big will her HEA be? Will she finally get back at Jeffra? Farrow & Donnelly - can’t wait to see their brotherhood bonds grow Lo & Donnelly - some of the best banter you’ve written, so excited to see this relationship grow Lily & everyone - I’m craving more Lily fairy moments after ULU The whole Hale Family - I love them all & will be sad to see their books go for a bit after NLU (I’m definitely more team Hale than team Cobalt - except for maybe Eliot & Tom because their chaos is awesome) I could really keep going!

I LOVE BEING IN MOFFY AND FARROWS HEAD *queue the hobbits dancing in a circle rejoicing!* so obviously, hanging out with them in Nobody Like Us, is going to be so much fun! I also have been eyeing more and more Xander. I think he, and Ben, have become my next favourites (contigent on their love interests and how those pan out of course as well hehe) for the next series that might come *crossing fingers*!

And chicas I need to rant. I am officially, not only taking a break from X-Men comics :') BUT ALSO LOBBYING A STRIKE. I am so DISTRAUGHT. Not really just because of the MARRIAGE that's happening this September involving our 616 version of Rose Calloway, (the event i have with held from telling you just in case! But i do think its become such a big thing, i can only assume by now you know?) but because I feel like its just plot after plot without no soap opera? WHERE IS THE FUN DRAMA?! there is no interpersonal deep dives into the characters, fun friendships, romances, conversations about ethics? WHERE IT AT!? ITS CRICKETS! And its all kinda upsetting because Krakoa as a setting, its the most creative one marvel has ever done. But I have kinda lost investment because I can't get this level of depth anymore. My biggest complaint in the Krakoan era has been Cyclops' (aka Loren hale lol) characterisation and the obvious nostalgia baiting choice to pair him with JG. been Cyclops. I used to love Scott's obsessive need to be in control being derived from his fear of losing control of his powers is a perfect part of his character. Scott was such a hot mess of a character and this being due to his childhood trauma explains everything. In fact, without the childhood trauma, the only explanation of some of his actions are him being a complete bastard. Scott's boy scout persona and refusal to relax being a further part of this makes even more sense. His reliance on Jean and Xavier to make his decisions is further part of this. Scott's a superb leader, but it's a different sort of leader than Captain America or Storm. He doesn't lead because of his charisma or his personality. He leads because he's the best and he's not the best because he's some natural genius like Reed. He's the best because he works harder than anyone else. And Emma helped shape him to he a far better man and leader, helping him overcome his childhood trauma and move on. And embrace his powers instead of regress him for her own personal gain (like Jean). They were such a SHOW not tell romance. Now that he and Jean have been together for what, 4 years now back together, ALL THIS HAS BEEN RETCONNED. Where is all this hard earned work in his character? I think in the Krakoan era, Cyclops became probably the most inconsistently written character I have ever read. And in part i think it’s cuz writers just have constant conflict pov on how he should be and just rely on readers to assume personal development and character explanations happens off page..and for A about 4 years NOW, they got away with it. It’s such a displeasure to read. I’ve also seen people self insert and excuse his messy ass saying it’s because he’s autistic but again that’s giving writers yet another benefit they haven’t even tried to write! A freebie almost! I have also come to the conclusion that Cyclops and Jean Grey's relationship is a lot like Spider-Man and Gwen Stacy's. A relic of an era long gone, while Cyclops and Emma Frost are analogous to Spider-Man and Mary Jane, a modern, and realistic pairing. And nothing is moving! Why regress them so! Why do I have to read panels of them arguing and Jean grey HITTING him in the face! AND THEN LECTURE HIM (and belittle and abuse) on forgiveness? Mercy?? Genocide?!?? Because she’s so much better, right 🙄🙄 GAH, there’s something unsettling about her using her powers this way. I just don't think using this force against a romantic partner and removing a visor that aids his disability feel right! And as a result of this fight, in the latest Hellfire Gala issue, he tries to come back with tail between his legs to Emma just trying to, without context, or biuld up, get back together? PLS CYCLOPS ENTER UR SPEAK NOW ERA! PLS. learn to be Kenough✨ 💀😭😝 but also man up and stop being a himbo to JEAN! SPEAK NOW! Gah I swear xmen brings out the worst in me sorry for the rant yall. I just have been too blessed ig reading such consistently written fantasy characters with writers with clear visions for months now (LIKE UNLUCKY LIKE US OMG THAT ENDING HAS ME IN A CHOKHOLD)I forget how bad it gets at Marvel. Such a shame really.. 😫 Okay rant over. sorry i have nobody to talk to with this about lol. i would so love to know what you guys think. I can just envision this maybe being a prime conversation over pancakes in the Hale household. xxxx

They would be on similar levels to them and other actors/celebrities -- really those who are consistently on TMZ, on the front cover of tabloids, and bring a strong rush of paparazzi when they go out. We would say Brad Pitt and Angelina back in the day, the Hales, Cobalts, Meadows would 100% be of that level of fame. Photos of their children sold in the millions, and paparazzi camped outside of the hospital when she gave birth.

OMG EMMA FROST IS GETTING MARRIED?! I have been under SUCH a rock that I didn't even get spoiled, but I looked it up bc I am just...SHOCKED and I had to know to who she's tying the knot with. And...my jaw dropped. I don't think I've EVER read anything where they're even in the same comic panel together? It feels so random. Also, all your thoughts about Scott, I totally understand. Sometimes I think his change in personality just really boils down to writers deciding they like "A version of him versus X version of him" and instead of actually trying to stay true to who he is, they go to the extreme of one version at the cost of the other. (And by writers, I mean that the teams of writers who get to write him. I think there are likely writers who prefer him to be more of the young First Class kinda of Scott and then those who like him as the leader he becomes. It's my theory anyway! I think the fact that comics are written by so many people at different times has to be a cause of this. Bc they can really change up the entire trajectory if they didn't like where someone else took it.) Regressing him back to his early days with Jean Grey is super predictable. I'm almost not surprised by the decision. The Scott who needs to have control, who is a GREAT leader, who makes choices and stands by them, is the one that Emma loves and that Scott just fadesssss into the background when he's with JG. But also JG is my least favorite X-Men prob of all of them, so I'm very biased too 😂 I loveeee X-Men but it does go in waves with how good the storylines are, so I can understand taking a break on it. I'm still bingeing Star Wars, and with it vs X-Men, it's like eating Sour Patch Kids to raisins right now. So picking X-Men back up isn't as enticing. Honestly, sometimes I think all of the X-Men storylines would just be great if they kept the same handful of writers on to do all the lines. I feel like having so many people write the characters is what makes them disjointed and unable to go deeper. I LOVE YOUR COMIC RANTS!!! 🤓 It fills my geeky heart!! xoxo B

That’s understandable - keeping up with the live feeds can be a lot because it feels as though there’s always **so much** to catch up on when you are able to tune in. & I try my best to keep up with the feeds! I watch them when I’m able to and when I’m unable to I try to go to the Joker’s Updates website and read the highlights there so that I can stay in the know! There have also been some TikTok accounts that have been posting important moments from the feeds - so those have been helpful as well! :) 🤎 I am also **so excited** to see the return of the pressure cooker comp that Julie teased! I hope that it’s entertaining & lasts for awhile (🤞).

Not to mention it's done because the main head writer, Duggan of X-Men, is also writing the iron man run now, and he's been using Emma Frost in Iron Man's storyline because he knows Emma pulls in views and dollar signs and so merging the two in popularity isn't because they work or there is a potential ship but purely for the dollar sign. This marriage is kinda a scam which i never thought i could say. But i'm trying to remain positive! Who knows! Forced proximity, enemies to lovers, arranged marriage, royalty vibes are all tropes i could potentially see them have! Which is intriguing? But then again... idk if these X-Men writers who have been outputting this quality of comics necessarily have the chops selling a really complicated pairing... And you are so spot on for JG! I mean in the panel where she hits Cyclops mid argument she's lecturing him and the entire time i'm just like JG is SO FULL OF IT 😭😭😭 like really? She’s gonna lecture (and belittle and abuse) her husband on forgiveness? Mercy?? Genocide?!?? Because she’s so much better, right 🙄🙄 And you're right, everytime they're together he fades into the background. Which is kinda toxic too. Because x-men comics have done so well over the years not because it is a 'or space' but because it is an, 'and space'. Everybody has their cake and eats it. But for some reason i think like you said, the writers just don't know what to do with these underdeveloped pairings in the mix with super developed characters so they just let them FADE into the background in the guise of the 'leaders taking the backseat for other x-men to shine'. When it's like no! You can have everyone shine and have their moment! Honestly you so need to tell me what the Hales stances are in the X-Men Krakoa state! Reddit is kinda a war zone now... It's not as bad the Spider-Man subreddit which is trying to painfully pretend the current run doesn't exist, but it's still pretty bad. Everyone's kinda fed up with half-hearted disney plots. Would any of the Hales take breaks? Or would they continue reading even if the plot makes them... idk... sad or angry? :O I can imagine maybe Luna can easily just like you, switch up to the Star Wars comics whenever X-Men kinda sucks until it gets good again, and maybe Xander has the fantasy series he always defaults too, but what about Lily and Lo and Moffy? OMG MOFFY! *insert squirrel reaction at the thought of Moffy* DC on the other hand is so healthy :O. They gave their writers and aritst a break over summer so all lines are paused (healthy break i tell you) and are giving us a white girls' wet dream event this summer which is the simple plot of, "a virus has struck that's giving everyone nightmares and spooky horror realities they must battle, what are all your superheroes worst nightmares revisited?" and we get to see everyone battle like, their worst nightmares and ghosts and horror stuff which is kinda amazing! It's an amazing character deep dive. Flash's one was AMAZING! As well as Nightwing. TBH they were all really good! A lot of Marvel writers are jumping Disney ship and moving over to DC because they just give them more liberty and freedom of plot. But I JUST STARTED STAR WARS LEGENDS and it's really really good! The beginning seems a bit slow but i bet it will pick up right away! Do you remember the comic book that made you be like, "OMG this is IT"? Once you finish legends and are up to date, will you continue reading the current star wars comics? I heard that there was a crossover event titled, "the war of the bounty hunters" which seems kinda awesome? And speaking of Star wars! I am off to watch the latest 2 episodes of Ashoka!
