General Q&A 2023

As 2023 is coming to a close, we wanted to do Q&A podcast for the end of the year 🥳 This is the time to ask us ANYTHING your heart desires, and we'll try to answer as many as we can. It can be about future projects, pop culture, writing, books, characters you know and love, whatever you wish! These ones are always a blast to record, and we think it'll be a great way to cap off 2023! The reason it's not coming for December is because we have the What To Expect in Nobody Like Us pod slated for next month 😉 So many good things are on the horizon! Thank you in advance for all the questions!!

Have you thought about a writing a bonus scene in Lo’s POV where he is listening in on Donnelly and his father’s first lunch (the one where Lo finds out Donnelly went broke for Ripley’s adoption, etc) I think it would be really interesting! Also are there ever scenes that you want to add in a book but you think they’d do better as a bonus scene or vice versa where you feel a scene needs to be in a book (and have the two of you ever disagreed)?

Since they have board game tournaments, do they each have a favorite board game? :) • How has planning for the next HMC series been? I know that you can’t say much, but I was wondering if you have the series order plotted out already? Or if you’ve solidified who the pairing for the first book will be, but the rest of the series is kind of open at this point? • If fans started making friendship bracelets for the famous ones on a regular basis, which famous ones & which members of SFO would be most excited about it? :) • In ULU Tom mentions The Carraways’ email account while discussing the Harriet situation with Luna & Eliot, and reading that scene made me curious about whether or not the recent drummers for The Carraways have been able to access The Carraways socials (as in have access to their login information)? Is that something that Tom & Warner would trust them with right off the bat, or would they be more hesitant to do so considering their cursed drummer history? I’m just imagining Tom and Warner having to change their passwords each time a drummer leaves the band & that making the situation even more frustrating for them (💀). • I was wondering what your feelings were on writing Moffy’s Christmas coming out scene as a future bonus? There’s absolutely noo pressure to write that scene! I’m just curious if it’s something that could happen in the future, or if it’s something that’s not likely to ever become a bonus?

I believe you guys talked about that you have Italian people in your family and I was wondering where did you get the name Banks and Thatcher from as someone who reads a lot of Mafia books and regular romance Italian books I've never heard those names before. Were there any other names you considered for those 2 characters?

For future children of the hales, cobalts and meadows would you ever allow us to vote on baby names alot of authors have been doing it. Letting us put our suggestions in the comments then the author makes a poll. For some authors we won't know when the baby name will pop up or who they belong to until the book comes out.

I love that you two write dual POV to give us insight to the head’s of the main characters of your books! I am curious since at this point, you have written so many POVs across all of your series and novels, who out of each series POV has been your favourite to write? (I.e, which POV from the addicted series, which POV from the like us series etc.) additionally, are there any characters that were just generally difficult to get into the head of? I know some authors will say “this character just didn’t speak to me right away” or “i had to really take my time with this character bc…”, just curious if this has ever happened and for which characters!! 🫶

I think in a previous podcast you mentioned that you have to write the next two Webs We Weave books back to back next year. Does that mean that there would potentially be a shorter time between the releases of those two books? I know we haven’t read dishonestly yours yet but I’m already hoping the next two in the trilogy won’t be too long after that!

You guys have now had multiple experiences with both Indy and Traditional publishing. If you were given the offer, would you ever go to traditional publishing only? Or do you like having the mix of the two types of publishing (and if so why?)

Are you guys still in the super early planning phase of the next HMC series, or have you guys determined exactly what the next series will be about, who gets books in it and how many, etc? It sounded in previous podcasts that you guys were still debating the direction (like if a book was going to be about the romance or about the brotherhood with romance elements)

Before you begin writing a new series, how far ahead do you plot? The Like Us series branched off on 4 different famous one’s relationships plus Oscar, so 5 total. When you started the series did you know which characters you were going to give books to and their love interests? Or did you decide to start with Moffy and Farrow and see where it goes? As you begin to transition into writing the next series, I’m just curious how much you’ll have plotted out on day 1 of writing? Do you know exactly who will get books, their love interests, and the plots on day 1? Or do you have maybe the 1st couple of books planned and then you wait to see where the writing takes you? And a follow up: I know you’re a big fan of charts and spreadsheets to keep details organized. Before you start a new series, I assume you have to have a lot of these details not only on the main characters, but also any side characters (like bodyguards) written down. Can you give us more insight into this process? I’m picturing your writing cave walls being plastered with like flow charts and family trees haha. Or one of those boards you see on crime shows where the detective tacks index cards with different names and details written on them on it and then has red string zigzagging all over the place connecting them. But I have a feeling you’re more digitally organized than that.

Eeek these are literally my favourite type of podcast because its an opportunity to ask new recs, fun things and ask what the characters enjoy! 1. Do you think that Farrow would grow up and enjoy the One Piece animation or manga? given his love for pirates? Would Moffy try and watch the animation secretly to impress or one up Farrow? Or because Farrow is his childhood crush ergo wanna consume any form of inspo/influence of Farrow? Or would he spearhead watching the real adaptation? Would they show the animation to baby Rip?

2. What are your guys' individually or seen together, top 5 comfort rewatched shows of all time?

3. The idea of the like us era ending honestly give me alot of anxiety XD. To know that the era will end on Lunalley's story when Lunalley are by book 3 when they JUST are trying to find their footing as a couple makes me sad we don't get as much screentime to see them be domestically together as say we did with Kitsulleti or Marrow. Is there a possibility that People Like Us can become what Some Kind of Perfect is for the Like Us era? A collection of domestic moments fit chronologically that will come out before the new Cobalt Era? While I do think we will always have bonus chapters, it makes sense that once we're in the Cobalt era it will be the cobalt bros time to take center stage (pun intended hahah love u leo) even in the bonus chapters. So much love for all these characters omg!

6. What are the individual Hale family's feelings on the state of Phase 4 and beyond? You guys echoed my own trepidation on why i feel like most of the Marvel projects coming out since Endgame haven't hit the sweet spot like the once did. So going through the list of family members (yes u too farrow) what would each of them respond?

7. Have you both (and Rose and Connor) been watching the new episodes of Gilded Age? :D

8. The Like Us era is a product of the past generation, ergo been very avant-garde about the way they approach life, conventions and beliefs. They all priortise individuality and weirdness (hehe the dream essentially). The realities that each character goes through are so real and resonates with so many, hence the strong fandom you guys have created. Reflecting reality and all the angst that comes with it is a theme strung along your guys' novels. With that in mind, most characters don't embrace or follow societal milestones thrusted upon them that we do. It's a given that most of us have to finish at least university degree in order to be even looked twice at in a professional setting when working for a Cobalt subsidiary. If we go through tough times during our personal life, most universities (at least in the UK) don't let us just switch our majors from in person to online. And a lot of us have to work weekends because it silently expected of us if we want to be promoted by peers meritocratically and be professionally respected. A very relatable moment during Alphas Like Us, was this reckoning Moffy was slightly having when he could have Farrow anytime he wanted because Farrow was under contract for a hospital, not him. Or in Sinful Like Us, when Thatcher had to keep it professional or else he would loose his job and financially suffer. Or in our current era, how Donnelly who doesn't have a drivers license because that cars cost a lot when u live in a city and taking the underground is just easier. However in all these three situations, it ends up working out for them, as compassion lent out to them by either Lo or Connor or one of the matriarchs. Which is amazing and wholesome but not something that always happens to us. Ironically its really expensive to have hobbies now a days and indulge in such eccentricities. Do you think going forth in the future eras, it is in the realm of possibility to see either some of the family members (Ben for example, who i think is the first Cobalt to commit to attending in person university and do a conventional sport like Hockey) where they will have to adapt to their partner's pride, learn how to compromise to their financial and career range and not 'save' them from it? Meet halfway around the others' schedule? Or find a place where both partners can afford splitting rent 50/50? PS. btw this is not at ALL in the range of a criticism, u guys know ur books have been my roman empire since the publication of Long Way down, ilysm, i just think this is just such an intersting opportunity to chat about some of the tough themes on: how money is really the solution to 80% of all our problems, how its expensive to have hobbies and be eccentric, the white knight trope etc. etc. :D in the KBR Roman Empire :D

That all makes sense but I can’t see any of the cobalts really working for someone else. They seem like people that like having control over their lives and not having to abide by someone else’s rule. It would have made more sense for this to happen in the like us series in my opinion. Either way I think if that were to happen it would be highly unrealistic because of their wealth. I love your point because it would make the characters realist and even more relatable. I think it would be more plausible for the future CMH love interests to be like that though!

I'm glad you liked it! :) However, I think you misunderstood my point. I am fully aware and have been forever that the protagonists are founded in extreme wealthy and with that brings eccentricities in their lives which i will always love and would never want them to change. My angle was about how THEY deal with THEIR love interest's complicated lives. And if the themes i brought up, KBR are interested in exploring not necessarily in the near future but just in the future. I am aware it takes a lot of plotting and planning so just wanted their general take on these challenging themes :).

I'm from Brazil and I loved the way you guys wrote Oscar and his family, especially that you didn't went for the classical Rio de Janeiro thing because it seems like this is the only way that Brazil appears on media. You have had so much happening this year and it seems like that trend is going to continue in the new year to come. Do either of you feel overwhelmed with how much work you have scheduled or are you more just excited about all your projects or maybe a mix of both?

On Instagram, Ana Huang mentioned she has her future releases scheduled up to 2027 and Lauren Asher jokingly replied in the comments that for herself she barely can plan up to the next weekend. I find the differences in everyone's writing processes really interesting, from how long it takes them to write a book or how far ahead they have things planned out. Obviously, things are always changing in your world, especially as hybrid authors who are doing indie and traditional publishing as well as personal circumstances outside of your work, I was curious how far in advance the two of you have planned for your future book releases? I would assume at least a little bit since you have to meet a deadline for the Webs We Weave series and I think I remember on one of your podcasts that you two wanted to do a series that is intertwined and going back and forth between characters which I assume takes some planning ahead.

What can you tease about how you see the younger kids books working out. Will we get there books while they're in college or when they're fully grown adults. I would love to know more about the process that went into deciding the genders and the amount of kids that each addicted couple had? I love this question! I know that Phoebe’s music isn’t quite the same genre that Tom listens to, but Phoebe is an emo fan at heart & I think that shines through in her songs! You both discussed different POV possibilities for the Cobalt Empire series in a previous podcast episode, and I was wondering if you’ve decided whether or not all of the love interests will have their own POVs at some point in the Cobalt Empire series? If some love interests don’t receive POVs, then does that mean that we won’t be able to request/receive bonus material in their POVs (since we haven’t unlocked them)?

Update: I did see the marvels and I surprisingly really liked it, I think the 3 actresses have such great comedic chemistry. I think it's mostly the MCU shows where I'm feeling the fatigue.

I was looking through some reviews of unlucky like us and let’s just say I’m NEVER looking at reviews because they make me sad! You guys have said you’ve learnt to write from the heart and write whatever you both love, but do you have to ban reading reviews? I personally would soon after the release but maybe a few months after I’d read them because maybe they’d have some good constructive criticism? Who knows. I’m not always happy with what some of the characters say or do but I like that because that’s what happens in this thing called life! Do you guys ever feel annoyed at your characters (even though you’re the one writing it😂) when they have to do something clearly stupid for the plot of the book? xx

As writers do you ever cringe when your characters say stuff they’ll regret or stuff they say in the heat of the moment? I believe loren and garrisons parenting style is probably the most common in real life. I for sure have a dad like them and most of my friends and family do too. Have you found that or am I way off? I prefer connor and rykes approach to parenting as well as daisys and roses. It feels like they give their children more space to breath and take risks ans push the boundaries in safe places. When they were at home obviously. I’m not saying lily and willow and their husbands don’t do that I just think they’re a little more cautious and have more double standards when it comes to gender which can sometimes be fair and understandable but irritating nonetheless. Who knows maybe like moffy I’ll understand when I’m a parent like Loren says but…I don’t know. This is me just asking if you can see that and if so what are your thoughts? xxx
