I was surprised; there wasn't as much as there had been on previous occasions.

Today I'll clean up the backup PC, and starting tonight or tomorrow, I'll begin cleaning up the OS and reinstalling everything.

I think twice a year is enough. The risk of breaking a plug or cable is high.

Don't worry, it's not broken, it's just maintenance, a tune-up of the interior, to keep the cooling system in top condition and prevent it from overheating when I render images.

Have you ever looked into filters for your fans and cabinets? They used to be available, but I haven't had a tower rig in a rather long time.

No, I've never tried anything like that. Although the Alienware tower has hexagonal filters between the vents.

I had a bunch of filters that were made to be attached to the fans themselves, and on intake vents I had cut some bulk filter media that I attached with narrow strips of velcro tape. It wasn't a total solution, but they trapped a lot of the crud and were easily vacuumed or replaced. It made semi-annual case cleaning much easier.
