THE FALL OF LARA
Part 1
The wind from the sandstorm made it nearly impossible to keep the helicopter stable. But the experienced pilot knew how to counter the storm’s onslaught.
“We should get out of here,” he shouted over the intercom. “Let’s log the GPS coordinates and come back when the storm clears.”
“Haven’t you checked the GPS?” Lara said, grabbing the rope she’d hooked onto the towline. “It’s fried. Something down there doesn’t want to be found. Once I’m inside the temple, you go back to base. The storm is getting worse. I’m taking a signal laser. You’ll just have to track the beam’s frequency with our satellite.”
Konstantin wanted to try to change her mind, but he knew it would be a waste of valuable time; the grains of sand were already causing the first problems for the rotor and getting into the gears. He simply said, “OK,” and waited, keeping the helicopter as steady as possible until Lara radioed him that she had reached solid ground. He immediately turned away from the the wind and sped off at full throttle, hoping to get clear of the storm.
Inside the temple, Lara looked up at the opening in the ceiling until she saw the helicopter disappear. She then took in the main chamber of these ancient Egyptian ruins. Apparently, the place had once been accessible via a slope or staircase, but now there was no way for a person to reach it except from above. The temple walls looked as if they’d been cut with a laser, making any attempt to climb them impossible.
There were several figures of the God Anubis, which, paradoxically, seemed to be watching over the main object in the chamber rather than being positioned to protect the place. The air was cold, like in a crypt in northern Europe, and quite damp. Curiously, even though she could feel it, Lara could also sense the new clothes Samantha had prepared for her.
“Lara, do you read me?” The strange silence was broken by the static-filled electronic sound of her radio. Apparently, Konstantin was still within radio range. “Is the temple safe? Over.”
“I read you,” she replied. “Yes, it seems safe… but more than a temple… this looks like a prison.”
“Prison?” he replied, his voice sounding increasingly cracked up.
“It’s as if whoever comes down here can’t get back out… it's cold and damp... By the way, thank Samantha for the new outfit; this new latex bodysuit and these YourSIN stockings seem to protect me very well from the cold and damp …”
There was no reply this time, only static. The distance to the helicopter and the sandstorm had cut off all communication. Lara looked up once more, at the opening at the top of the chamber. More than eighty meters of descent from the opening to the floor.
Then a strange sensation ran through her body. As if danger were lurking. Instinctively, Lara turned, and her eyes fell on the Ankh displayed on a pillar on the other side of the chamber.
For a moment, Lara’s suit seemed to betray her. Invisible hands seemed to run over her body, caressing her as no one ever had before, just as in her darkest, most personal dreams. Massaging her. It took her by surprise, and she didn’t know how to react, until suddenly, she heard a whisper:
“I’ll make you mine, bitch,”
Lara sprang into action. She drew her weapons and took aim.
