Crystal in the Studio (Patreon)
Content
This is a short sequence of images all taken one after the other. The light stayed the same, one flash in a small octobox just behind and to the camera right of the model. You can see as you scroll through the images how very slight movements from the model gave slight variations of expression and mood. When photographing someone it is often a good idea to explain this method of very slight movements to help them create a variety of shots then go back through them and choose only the best one or two to use. The camera was mounted on a studio stand and didn't move much if any. Proper exposure is determined by the area of the model catching the most light. A lot of the model falls in to dark shadow which creates the feel of the shot. It's nice to be set up so detail is still discernible even in the deepest shadow areas. Sometimes a reflector may be necessary for this and it can be something as simple as a large white sheet to throw a little light into the shadow areas. The black background material in this shot reflects no light at all.
