When shooting with lamps or lights in the background I always try to be sure they are turned on and that my exposures is such to allow them to look like they are turned on in the image. In my opinion a lamp or light in the background which is not emitting visible light in the exposure makes the picture look dead. So first thing I do is turn on all lamps where I'm shooting and as I'm shooting I adjust my exposure to make the glow in the background.
