Great new episode! Had me cackling throughout, especially the dog mom feelings, so real. I wanted to share a couple thoughts about the empty netters debacle… I watched their reactions to all 6 episodes, plus their discussion of the show with other people (and cast members of Heated Rivalry who came on as guests). While they *are* a hockey podcast and the two brothers did both play hockey at a collegiate/junior level, both of them live in LA where they primarily work as screenwriters. They had already done a kind of “book club” series on some other “hockey smut” featuring a straight romance — one which they primarily made fun of. They frequently watch and review movies about hockey and roast them. So I do think they A) tend to approach popular media about hockey with a haters lens, and B) grew to love the show as they watched. If you watch their reviews week to week (not that I’m suggesting that), it’s pretty clear that once they start taking the content seriously, they get emotionally invested in the characters and their relationships. What made their reviews compelling, I think, was the bro-ey tone they took while consuming content made primarily by and for gay men and straight women. As Matt pointed out, patriarchy has taught our culture to elevate and seek the approval of straight white men, even when it’s not *about* them…and that is probably the appeal of empty netters. It was bizarrely refreshing to hear hockey bros center gay male desire in a way that felt, at least for awhile, like they understood it and related to it. As a bi woman, I’ll admit it made me feel like they saw sex through my eyes for a minute. I do think they made those awful, thoughtless comments before they knew they would gain so much traction and, cynically, capitalism has often driven the biggest moments of mainstream cultural acceptance. So…no excuses, just some self-reflection about what I saw from them before the text messages came out. Love you guys!
