I was inspired to create an ambient soundscape called "Cosmic Whale Song" after reading an article about a groundbreaking encounter between scientists and a humpback whale named Twain. The researchers from the SETI Institute, UC Davis, and the Alaska Whale Foundation were studying humpback communication systems in an attempt to develop intelligence filters for the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. When they played a recorded humpback contact call into the sea, Twain approached their boat and responded in a conversational style, matching the interval variations between each signal. This interaction, described in the journal Peer J, is believed to be the first communicative exchange between humans and humpback whales in the humpback "language."
