Here is my coverage of Tokyo Auto Salon 2026. The whole show was unreal and it was awesome to meet so many people I knew and got to see evolution of builds I'd been following for years. So to make things about as difficult for myself as possible, I decided that in addition to filming a quick video for YouTube I would also take a photos, which meant 2 cameras. For my videos I shoot with a Sony ZVE-10 vlogging camera with a wide angle lens attachment, but for photos I use my trusty Canon 70D which I bought years ago. Unfortunately I dropped it a couple weeks ago and busted my only zoom lens and so I bought myself a brand new 10-22mm wide angle lens specifically for the show and to help me try and fight Instagram's insane amount of cropping these days.
It's a beautiful lens, probably the most I've spent on a single lens to date but I'm super happy with it. Now here are a few of the photos I took of the show.
One car I do need to talk about is this "Pocket Bunny" Suzuki Twin with an R32 swap. This is the car that "broke the internet" and for obvious reasons, it looks sick as hell and I love it. What I don't love is how many people are just discovering the Twin and deciding they need to buy them, causing the prices to no doubt skyrocket like every other car that hits internet fame. I guess there go my chances of buying a whole fleet of these for me and my friends.
In the video I joke about this car being my new rival. It's important that everyone knows that this is not a serious rivalry and everything is just in good fun. I think picking rivals is actually a very useful thing as it can push you to go even further with your own work. That being said:
Hahaha. I've spent a few days now planning out what I'll do with my twin to top this build, and I was worried how I would top my Group C build, but this Twin is going to be absolutely my greatest creation yet. I can't wait for it to fail Shaken so I can get started.Back to the photos.
It's a little crazy that the car everyone was talking about this year at auto salon was the Twin because "kyahh, mini R32! So cute!" when there were actually a surprising amount of other mini cars there. This mini Fast and Furious Supra built by the legends at NATS, one of my favorite people to watch each year.
As well as the mini R32 and mini Supra, another mini build that I didn't really catch anyone talking about was the mini NSX based off I believe a Honda S660 chassis.
This was in the AthleteX booth with some other sick cars like a Hako and another one of Miura sans group C lookalike builds.
While I was walking around this booth I got spotted and so spend a good few minutes chatting with my new mate Eric who works for a company that makes custom wheels for a lot of these older cars.
While chatting with Eric the head of the booth Isaka-san came out and we got chatting as well, it turns out that he was a fan of the channel as well and had been watching since I started the MX-5. Forgot to grab a photo of him at the show but he swung by the garage after auto salon to check out the MR-C.
It was definitely a bit of a surprise to hear that he was a fan of the channel, not exactly the image I have in my mind of my target demographic haha. And it was also thanks to Isaka-san that I got to personally meet Hironao Yokomaku, AKA the president of Veilside:
That was definitely a pretty unreal moment. To get to meet someone responsible for a company that I've followed since before the idea of making my own kits even occurred to me. And to have it sound like he was genuinely interested in what I'm doing and reach into his wallet and hand me his business card. Turns out that Isaka-san and him go way back and are actually good mates. There may be a future trip to Veilside HQ for me to get to have a better chat with them both.
Another pretty funny find was this Lexus rocking clear wing struts. Seem familiar to anybody?
Can't forget to mention that while walking past the Hotwheels booth I managed to see my own car hanging on the racks and so I bought a couple. One I kept and one I ended up signing and giving away at the show.
So now when people ask me if I had my car at Auto Salon I can honestly say yes, at least 4 of them in fact, and it only cost me ¥500 per car.
I got plenty of photos of the other Rocket Bunny group-c build for reference and to help me figure out my own build.
Another booth I had to visit was the GCG booth, partly because I know a few of the guys there, but also because in the booth was Under Suzuki's time attack S15, one of my favorite cars and builders of all time. I got to talk with Under briefly as well which was unreal.
And lastly, honestly the main reason I went to this whole show, just to get to see this car in person for the first time.
And that wraps up my coverage of Tokyo Auto Salon 2026. I can say I'm now more motivated than ever to get some of my own builds to this show, maybe not the 2027 one but definitely in the future. If you're wondering why the lack of posts it's because I've been so fired up for both my MR-C and my Twin as well as finally getting a few more essential tools for the shop and I've just been working non stop. I'm currently editing up the next MR-C episode and have a full Twin episode shot waiting to edit for after that, but my hope is to get to be at the fiberglass stage pretty soon for the next large section of the Group C build.
