The Major is a pretty normal amount of sexist for someone born around 1905. The guests are written to be as annoying and eccentric as the plot requires, and they are very annoying in this one. Basil does have a point about them, but he doesn't have enough patience for this kind of work. The German guests are being perfectly reasonable, and are all too young to have been in any way responsible for things in the 30s and 40s.

Season one would have been 1975, only 30 years after the end of the war, so many of the guests would have been too young to be involved, but were probably alive The older German would have been old enough to have fought though
