Hey guys! Sorry this is late (again.) Still feeling a bit ill, but feeling better than I was a couple of days ago. Blackadder really cheered me up, though! (Well, until the end... 😢)

Glad you are feeling a little better Megan, great reaction. For me this is the best ever episode of Blackadder, the writing of it is brilliant, but with the great writers involve with the show, that is to be expected, the final 5 minutes brings tears, just to think of what all those young men gave on both sides. Did you notice Dr.Price (The sausage wanting doctor from Fawlty Towers) as Field Marshall Haig. One last note, I adore Baldericks "Boom Boom Boom".

A very topical reaction considering we can't be too far away from WW3 now. A few years ago the The Vengaboys did a cover of one of Baldrick's poems... https://youtu.be/llyiQ4I-mcQ?si=Z9_8mVL26T0uvTaJ "I'm scared Sir", that's when the episode changed tone. Probably the first line that didn't end with or set up a joke. Even though you can hear one woman in the audience laughing still. I'm not a massive fan of Blackadder but this episode is pretty amazing. They used to show it in schools. Maybe they still do.

thanks David! I agree! It definitely gives all the emotions. Ahh no I didn't but I knew he looked familiar! Yes! That's such a great moment! 😆

MeganRuth

ah yes you're very right! Omg! I've actually heard this song before... had no idea it was a cover 😆 Yeah, definitely agree that line changed the tone... it was delivered so well, too!

Probably the finest ending to a series one could have. After the absurdity of WW1 shown throughout the series. The reality of the war is perfectly conveyed. Over 60,000 Canadians died in that war with another 172,000 wounded. A massive sacrifice for the then British Empire. One should never forget these men and women and all the others who came from across the globe to join the fight against Germany and Austro-Hungary. Such a terrible waste.

You could watch Blackadder Back and Forth next. It was made by Sky for the Millennium Dome

MeganRuth

ah yes! Thanks for reminding me about that!

I wonder if Field Marshall Haig had his sausages for breakfast 😊😊

Known as one of the best endings ever to a TV show, and you can totally see why. Though this wasn't the original ending, it was actually edited "The cast and the other soldiers charge over the top and a few seconds afterwards the whole group began violently (and rather unconvincingly) shaking (while getting shot by Germans). Baldrick is the first to die from the cast and falls down near Blackadder and Darling and George (with very amusing faces, albeit unintentionally) slowly die next. Soon after everyone is dead and the firing has stopped, Blackadder, who only pretended he was dead, gets up again and goes back to the trench for safety, thus surviving the war." though I definitely think it was more effective leaving on a sombre note. Have always loved that transition to Flanders Field ❤️

A little Tid-bit about Baldricks poem “The German Guns”. Somehow, a copy of it ended up in the archives of the Imperial War Museum. It wasn’t discovered until the 2000s, when a school child was asked to narrate his favourite poem from the IWMs archives; “The German Guns” by S. Baldrick.

On the note of being shot for going mad; accounts tell of soldiers that were diagnosed as mad, self-diagnosed, diagnosed by a fellow soldier, or lying about it, were dragged out without question and executed, the sentiment being “put the poor soul out of his misery.”

If it wasn’t mentioned in the comments for episode 4x2, there is a monument in Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, called the Shot at Dawn Memorial, commemorating the 309 men and boys who were executed for “cowardice”, now believed to be PTSD. They were posthumously pardoned by Parliament under the Armed Forces Act 2006.

MeganRuth

😂 you're joking! That's hilarious!

MeganRuth

No I don't think it was! Thanks for the info. I'm glad they were pardoned :)

MeganRuth

Ah the magic of editing!! Thank you for sharing :)

MeganRuth

Yes I saw the video of the original! Someone posted it here. The magic of editing! 😊
