Doenitz did actually become Fuhrer after Hitler died. I don't think anybody else of the Nazi top echelons wanted the job

I remember it coming as a surprise when I learnt it in History. I would have thought Himmler or Goering or even Goebbels . I was given the impression they gave some of the others the chance to be the new Fuhrer and Doenitz was the first one to say "yes".

I think I remember reading that Hitler viewed the army and air force as having let him down, which is why he turned to the navy
