As someone who has recommended Vinland sage since attack on titan I think my hero academia is in order considering season 8 the last season just came out. Please put it in the poll

I’m a 36 year old man yet I still want to be like Thorfinn when I grow up.

The scene of Canute commanding the waves to stop is taken from the actual real legend of King Canute.

My pimp

Canute commanding the waves to stop is based on a story that the real life Canute did the same thing. To make a similar point that he was just a man, and was not all powerful. Though I believe in reality Canute was a devout Christian.

already waiting to long for the net ep

The world would be a MUCH better place if more people were like Thorfinn. And Tanjiro.

The thing that makes Vinland Saga such a transcendent story imo, is that it strikes the perfect balance between portraying the brutality of the world without being nihilistic and reveling in the brutality, while also being life affirming and hopeful without being naive about how difficult walking the path of nonviolence is in a world where might makes right.

The scary part with Canute is he did everything right. Manipulating the immature, angsty young master to strike first so his retaliation will look rightious from the start. The first act of war came from Ketil's side with the bumbling idiot who shot the first arrow. Canute didn't ravage the farm, he waited. Every action was driven by the opposing side making mistakes and Canute just taking the natural course of action from their perspective. And to tame the Vikings by not raiding after they won speaks volumes to the paradise he's trying to accomplish. Attempting to change the nature of the Vikings is a monumental task and that's what Thorfinn is in awe of. Canute is undertaking an impossible goal at the cost of becoming a king that fosters hate, seen from Einar's response. Changing a habit requires repitition and that means inciting violence to practice war in a way that Canute wants the Vikings to behave. More lives will be lost to achieve his peace, but at what cost...

The way I see it Canute is giving orders when necessary with the Vikings. Like maybe giving orders when absolutely essential will give them a different sense of purpose than what they currently know thus leading to something different down the line. Like he said priorly the paradise he is thinking of doesn’t have to be in his lifetime. But he is going make sure the world gets there someday. The waves bit scared me because it felt like “oh this is the crown talking now. Now we’re seeing a corrupt Canute. He’s losing it,” at first but it confirms that the hypocrisy is not lost on him. Nothing is going over his head. He’s fully aware of the fact he’s succumb to the duty of the king. If that wasn’t the case he wouldn’t have “welcomed” that ghastly apparition that keeps popping up at every turn. “Hate me if you must,” “mock me.” We’ve seen him accomplish amazing feats either by fear or atrocious acts like when poisoning his brother. It’s not wrong to say he’s showing contradictions in his pursuit to paradise but like he said he’s not God. He can’t stop the world with the power he has. “We're going to take back what we lost. I'm willing to turn into a demon if that's what it takes to do it.” Even with those amazing accomplishments his power can only do so much. I’m not talking down him poisoning his brother because that is awful and he knows that. Even though he continued to lie to him on his deathbed Canute’s words seemed genuine even though he was underhandedly putting him down. This is because he feels he has to do this to get to that end goal. One death will cut through a multitude of wars that is likely to happen with two successors. And that’s why he does these things the way he’s been doing them. He also needs to show results as well because men like his don’t follow someone who isn’t effective nor show any respect to anyone who isn’t strong. He needs strength to show results but he is also looking to save the Vikings from themselves. Great episode I can’t wait for more 👑

Prime Ami

When the other Vikings were quiet when Thornfinn yelled to get it over with, they were quiet because they saw how serious Thorfinn was not that it was not fun anymore

Smoker S

It's astonishing how 1 single line can change your whole mindset on your way of life & how you act !

Nat

I don’t think she meant that they were thinking like, “oh this isn’t fun anymore”. She was just pointing out that they were seeing him differently.

Nat

They have two polls right now, they’re not gonna do Berserk

Nat

They already put up the poll. And it is anime.

Came here to say the same thing! Some versions tell it like that, he wanted to show his brown-nosing retainers that he was just a man, but some versions tell that Canute had lost it and truly believed he could stop the waves. I love the way Yukimura uses this historical story/record for his story, really gives it more substance!

Viktor Engholm

Any time you find yourself enjoying the violence and action, it turns on you and make you feel bad about it. Just a little, haha!

Viktor Engholm

Indeed, it's about changing the violent culture, where Canute wants to enforce a new one step by step, instead of fully rejecting it. He needs to act like a true king, and keep the forces on his side, while changing their ways where he can. But he still commits atrocities, and spreads fear and despair to anyone in his way.
