The show ranges from comedy to drama to romance, to historical lore, to medicinal fun facts, to murder-mystery, to just the absolute fucking worst painnnnn, anddddddddd then back to comedy LMAO... Rinse and repeat. With the occasional perspective change. This show has it all.

2026-09-06 10:00 I always felt that part of the reason Maomoa is so inured to Jinshi's attempts at seduction is because she grew up in a brothel, so she is more accustomed to seeing that kind of stuff (and the dark side of what can go along with it) than the more sheltered ladies in waiting who populate the rear palace. It definitely makes for great comedy though

This is why I love this patreon channel :) So many easter eggs already sneaking in that reward the people on a rewatch ;) "I already love this show and we're only 2 episodes in, how much better can it get?!" Ladies, this is a rollercoaster of a show and you haven't even been SEATED yet on the ride... This show just keeps getting better and better, episode after episode. Ugh, I hate Jinshi, he's such a creep with only superficial "merits". Really the worst thing about this show, which is great otherwise. Also, the subs say "drugs" but the correct translation is drugs as in medicine rather than narcotics. The "aphrodisiac" is literally just regular chocolate, nothing more.

haha if you hate jinshi then you completely are missing the point of his character and ... tihngs that I can't talk about here. He does what he does for a reason, whether you like it or not, but if you don't understand his character and the story behind it, then you either gave up early, or completely missed the point and maybe you can see a new perspective when the girls react to the show, without being biased by the comments :)

Just so you know, eunuchs were often just castrated, which means they lost their testacles, but still had a penis. But sometimes, it was both (technically called emasculation). We don't really know which applies in the show. As always, I'm really loving your girls' reaction.

I didn't "miss the point", I just believe the "point" is a boring trope and all his supposed "points of attraction" are ridiculously superficial. Don't want to spoil so I won't go into details, but all he's got going for him is 1. being pretty and 2. following an obvious and imo boring trope. MaoMaos initial reaction is good and justified; being disgusted and creeped out. There's nothing about him that should change that. But the show is quite a bit the equivalent of a shonen power fantasy, except aimed at women who likes the ideas of being pursued by pretty boys of status, so the fact that he continously is an escalating creepy stalker that would be shunned if he wasn't hot (and one other thing) gets disregard. Of course, everyone else is free to like him, personally I just don't feel it.

I can understand not liking the trope but i can't imagine watching this show while actively hating Jinshi.

That's why I dropped it twice before managing to finish the current seasons. I'm still curious about where some things will go because a lot of things other than Jinshi - and the way Maomao clearly will lose her way with him despite him not deserving it, in complete defiance of her character as it was introduced to us - are still interesting. But Maybe the author will completely surprise me and Maomao will keep being sensible and Jinshi get what he deservs.

The best way I like to describe this show is that it's a Mystery for Maomao and a RomCom for Jinshi

Chocolate does help increase blood flow which does allow for high libido! Especially when chocolate was rare and had a high cacao content. Most aphrodisiacs are just yummy things that help blood flow honestly, mostly some kinda stimulant.

Again. There's a difference between a character's as actions bothering you vs completely discrediting the writing and the character's story line. If jinshi was making you cringe, that was BY DESIGN, heck they even throw in the metaphorical laugh track with maomao cringing and treating him like an insect because in her eyes he's being insufferable and not genuine... THATS THE POINT. That's not bad writing, if they made you "get the ick" from his actions ? Absolutely, all power to you, that's the intent. Because they're telling a separate story underneath that I won't get into the details here. But everyone for example used to cringe on zenitsu for 4 seasons straight, I get it, he was written that way but there was a payoff to that, so that when zenitsu actually locked in YOU FELT IT, you then realize his driving factor and why he's being that way and how he's pushing past it. Same with jinshi. If he's being a pain to maomao right now and for however long or even indefinitely (no spoilers) and sometimes pushing the limits of social boundaries, it's for a reason and it's because he also doesn't know better (explaining why would be spoiler territory), so you just have to either let the story take you on that slow burn of a ride, or simply just chalk it out to an "intermission" in the show if you really have to. Jinshi is not even my favorite character. Neither is maomao. My favorite character doesn't show up until next season and all my red flags about certain scenes became green heart signs (Iykyk), and yet that doesn't discredit the show or the writing or even the tropes. That jinshi doesn't work for you? That's fine. Neither for me, but to insult the character writing completely without giving the benefit of the doubt for the same writer that gave us amazing OTHER characters, it's demeaning because those characters and stories are proof that they're good writers, once you figured out the characters... Jinshi's is a bit slower though and set up for more cringe by design... You just gotta let the writer cook and not complain over every ingredient that goes into the pot without understanding why that ingredient is needed for the final course.
