So Maomao quietly realized at the end that Jinshi lied about who he was meeting, he was meeting a courtesan to ask that question and just ended up asking her anyway.

There's a lot of good easter eggs and layers in this episode that looks like it's a "filler" episode, but the girls have been noticing the important character/story progression hidden gems for a reward later. Basen munching on the chicken skewers gives me "Private PI on a stakeout while trailing someone" vibes and it always makes me chuckle! I can't even think of a single thing that they didn't already notice this episode! impressive. WARNING: Hint at something that hasn't happened yet, don't expand unless you want to be hinted at: . . . . . . . . . . Also, it took me multiple rewatches of the entire series to understand the fake alias easter egg of jinSHI to jinKA is very subtle and maomao's intentional obliviousness or deflection has stopped her from asking so many questions even after she notices things that don't line up ;)

Yeah, on the topic of Jinshi's alias that he chooses for this outing, I only caught that recently myself. That is very interesting, and maybe not the smartest move for him to do XD

These episodes really DO feel so short. I am watching for my first time too and man, it would be really cool if you maybe watched two episodes at a time. This show - more often than others it feels - really carry the stories into multiple episodes and often barely move it along in any one, single episode. The wait even being just two days between new episodes is too long. 😆 I’m weak!

I would not say FALSE, but headcanon is fair. It would also explain why he went to a brother area different than the verdigris house so he could ask the question and get a step ahead on Lakan without asking that question to the sisters\brothel that houses maomao and more importantly: Lakan said he once knew someone from verdigris but never said if that person is alive or not so jinshi probably didn't want his information asked in a place where one of lakan's ears can hear, hence a separate brothel... This also happened in the very next episode after lakan's teasing. So it fits in terms of cause and effect. Headcanon? Sure. But explicitly false? I wouldn't completely chalk that out.

Well Jinshi calls it a restaurant and isn't even aware that there are courtesans operating there as becomes clear in the following episode. But in any case, since it isn't stated who he meets it's fine to speculate. Just giving a disclaimer that it is not canon. By the way in the manga it's actually Ah Duo he is meeting, but again, not in the LN so not canon.
