If I remember correctly, Lakan overheard people talking about Jinshi's new assistant who came from the Verdigris House and Lakan called them over to him to learn more. I think this was the warehouse episode. Thats when he started to get into Jinshi's business.

21 is one of my favorites but I feel like the whole last half of the season gets soooo good.

back in the day a lot of people would carry syph or other illnesses and be asympomatic (or mostly) and not know for years until they'd progress to the point where you can't really cure it anymore. i believe syph usually takes a few decades before it affects the brain

Lakan: "Maomao...I am your Father" Haylo & Kiss: "NOOOOOOOOO!" Lol, they were right! Definitely one of my favorite episodes of this season! So many juicy reveals, so many questions, so many troubling implications. It's nice that Maomao has her own family that takes care of her at the Verdigris House.

You are right about the syphilis. The disease destroyed the nose of the woman in the annex, leaving a hole in her face. However, the anime production team chose to cover it up with her hair to tone down the severity of the content. In the light novel, Maomao actually refers to her as the "noseless woman.

In anime, morning glories symbolize willful promises, short lived youth and or unrequited affection. Morning glories have short lives of 12 hours or so.
