As hard as it is to digest, these topics are sadly just facts of life. Whether we like it or not, these are things that need to be talked about and i’m glad this show isn’t afraid of tackling these talks without glorifying them. 😬

This is definitely a hard watch, but I love how maturely the show handled these topics. It's what makes this show so deep and impactful. Every character has so many layers, I honestly could write a whole essay about every single one

According to net discussions about LN and author comments, it seems the late emperor has been abused by older women both while being a prince and after becoming the emperor.

I can't remember any specifics, but I've seen speculation that the late emperor may have been afraid of adult women so much because he was assaulted by either the adult concubines or maybe even the late empress herself when he was a child. Possibly due to his looks and/or because there was a need to continue the diminished bloodline after the rest fell due to whatever epidemic happened that led to him becoming the emperor

I love Anshi, she is such a complex character. Her father sent her to the palace at 10 years old to purposely seduce the emperor, because many knew of his "preference" for younger girls in order to gain political power (same as consort lishu's father). I believe he was the only man she had ever known in that way & she birthed his children, so it's understandable to me that Anshi (despite how despicable the former emperor was), would be hurt that he could just forget her & want revenge. I do believe Anshi truly despised him; you could see it on her face when he approached jinshi & she stopped him in the flashback. I'm not excusing what she did because 2 wrongs don't make a right, but after traumatizing all those young girls for so many years, I can't say I'm not happy something put a stop to it. Also, when she mentioned "hiding his favorites" i think it was a call back to him having to have his favorite toys hidden as a kid, so that he wouldn't get too attached like he seems to be to Maomao.

unaware that jinshi is his grandson, the late emperor approached jinshi as a child like one of the little girls he’s interested in because he has a ‘beautiful face’. that explains the look lady anshi had and dragged him away

I'm not really convinced that's the reason. That's what a lot of people assume, and that may be a possibility, but all I know is that it's only a theory some people have. I don't see how he wouldn't know Jinshi is his grandson, since he knows Anshi birthed his child, a child in line for the throne, and he sees Jinshi standing next to Anshi and calling her "mother." I truly think the late emperor was just trying to give a gift to his grandson and nothing more. He's a POS, but he's a layered POS lol. Anshi could be shielding Jinshi for a number of reasons: she simply hates the late emperor and wants nothing to do with him; she fears what the late emperor may think of Jinshi; she doesn't want the reminder of what she did that night so close to the "child of a mistake"...etc. etc.
