The writing in this show is beyond wonderful. We're amazed how easily the characters can evoke emotions in us and how powerful the story is. And that shot with Subaru and Rem at the end is one of the most beautiful shots ever.

Great reaction as always. When he said " I came back" he didn't mean anything special. He just triggered the Witch of Envy by mentioning the previous iteration where the white whale killed Rem and caused him a lot of trauma. Each time he mentions the return by death , everything darkens around him, and the Witch threatens him. So when he said, 'I came back,' he meant he returned from that dark place. Also the "Subaru saving Emilia for himself " is a very heavy statement with quite a lot to unpack. as you said at first it was for Emilia but when the deaths became to accumulate it changed Subaru and it became for himself. Over time, the suffering and trauma wore him down so deeply that he clung to the idea of 'saving Emilia' as if it were his only anchor. It became his lifeline—the one purpose that gave him direction and kept him from completely losing his mind. Desperate to stay sane, he convinced himself that Emilia needed him, that she was helpless without him—even if that wasn’t true. Even when she was arguably no longer in danger in the capital, he insisted on staying by her side, involving himself in everything she did—irrationally, and without regard for the promises he had made to her. In his mind, she had become a fragile belief shaped by the countless deaths and failures he had endured. And while that perspective wasn’t entirely his fault—he had been conditioned by pain and repeated loss—it was still his mistake not to wake up from the illusion, not to let go of the narrative he had built around her. But letting go would’ve meant abandoning the very thing that had kept him sane—and that, in itself, is no easy thing.

I think I can now explain why Julius beat up Subaru, since it won't be covered in the anime. By insulting the Order of the Knights at the castle, Subaru effectively put a target on his back. His actions gave every knight a reason to harm him or demand compensation for mocking their order. Some of the less tolerant members might have even gone as far as to kill him later on. So what did Julius do ? He humiliated him in front of everyone in the arena and gave him a beating in front of everyone, this way the other knights won't see him as a real threat to their order but a buffon whose words you shouldn't take too seriously.

So yeah julius actually saved him in the long run and the fact that he beat him up like that actually stained his track record as a knight for beating up an amateur ( not very knightly to prey on the weak). So Julius sacrificed some of his reputation to protect Subaru selflessly because Subaru won't even know what Julius protected him from.
