Over 100 hands!!!

Today I was scheduled to release a new anatomy video. One of our patrons, Ignacio, requested a tutorial on how to draw hands for gestures.

If you have watched several of my videos you may have noticed that I really avoid drawing hands or I just hint at them in the slightest of ways to make you think I’m drawing them…but I’m really not!! It was the perfect crime…

Until Ignacio called me out and challenged me to finally face my demons and learn to draw flippin’ hands!

As I sat down to make the tutorial, warming up with some sketches, I realized I needed much more practice to make a quality tutorial.

I also recently got a handy new toy to play with, an iPad!

So I spent the day drawing every hand from the Bridgman book, the Michael Hampton book and a ton from Pinterest, getting more comfortable with my technique and also with the iPad.

Suffice to say, the tutorial is coming! And I’m actually very excited about it now! I’ve got lots of tips and tricks for you to make drawing hands in gesture much less scary and much more fun!

Stay tuned…

Haha, I think I did about 15-20 today, answering the question in the title. A mentor once told me that people often have troubles with hands but all they need to do is practice drawing them for two weeks and all the problems would vanish. I’ve decided to give it a try. So far I’ve discovered that drawing a hand is quite different from drawing a fist 0.0 The tutorial will be very welcome especially cause I don’t set up a timer for my studies. I’m eager to know the foundation, but also what are the gesture specifics of drawing hands quickly. Thanks a lot in advance!

Also congrats on the iPad, how do you like it so far?

I had done a challenge for hands this year, actually! I drew 300 hands, about 15 a day, and timed myself no more than 3 minutes per hand. It was really helpful! I've done the same challenge before and repetition really is key

It’s good so far! Im a bit slow on it but I’ll get faster! Maybe we can go sketching and you can give me some tips!

Oh, now I feel kind of sorry for suggesting this :D, but these images look fantastic and full of tips. The tutorial looks really promising. Also very stimulating discussion here in the comments, now I want to practice drawing 10-15 hands a day. Thanks!

Hahaha! Don't feel sorry Ignacio! You are challenging me to do something I always avoid, so thank you! Have you started your 10-15 hands a day yet?!
