Today's post is a unique one and I would love to hear your thoughts on this type of video.

It is quite specific but even if picture book illustration is not your interest, there is still some stuff in here that you might find useful.

This video was inspired by a question from Patron Chantal. She asked:

"I'd love to hear about gestures in relation to children's books. Like how gestures are approached for different styles kind of thing, and how far do you go with them until you start to clean up or whatever stages come after?" - Chantal.

This is such a great question and I'm excited to share the answer with you in the video.

My approach to illustrating children's books is very similar to how I approach gesture drawing...minus the nudity...

In this week's video:

  • Using model reference to inspire poses for children's books.
  • Behind the scenes of character gesture sketches used for Peanut Goes For The Gold.
  • Taking a rough character from gesture sketch to final.

Do you see any parallels between designing for children's book with your own process?

What would you do differently?

What's your favourite children's picture book?!

(At the moment, mine is Hot Dog by Doug Salati)

Gillian Gestures - Gesture for Children's Books

Did you find it hard to kind of “un-learn” anatomy for some of these illustrations? Every time I try to push something stylistically I find it almost impossible not to fall back on anatomical structure and detail, it’s like a curse lol

Good question! It's less of 'un-learning' and more about what information do I need to keep from what I know and what can I let go of to match the style I'm aiming for. Does that make sense?

This was awesome, thanks so much for sharing! Really nice to get some explanation along with visuals, it always looks easy when you see a cute dynamic character like peanut, until you actually try to draw it yourself lol
