Artist Study: Frank Frazetta (Patreon)
Content
After the success of the first Artist Study, I couldn't wait to get to the next one.
I've had Frank Frazetta on my list from the very beginning and I explain why in the video.
If you are new to the Patreon and this is your first Artist Study, let me briefly explain what it is....
Artists have been doing artist studies for hundreds and hundreds of years. All the way back in days of yore, artists looked into each other's work not just for inspiration but also to learn different techniques and approaches.
But as with gesture drawing, we are not simply 'copying' the artist's work. No, no, no. We are being intentional and choosing things we like about their work that we may find beneficial to our own practice.
What drew me to his work for this video, was the drama in all of his work. A lot of that is due to his composition, lighting and colour but there is also so much drama in his figure posing too.
In particular the areas I'm focusing on in the study are:
- Upward angles
- Exaggerated depth
- Rotation of body parts
- Dancing Hair!
- Simplistic but effective tone
- Playing with the levels of detail
- Maybe some ink gestures?!?!

So check out the video to see how examples of Frank's work and how I break down his work in a way that I can take some ideas from here into my own sketches.

Come back next Monday for Realtime Gestures #13 where I will be applying these new techniques to my gesture session using reference from the AMAZING Frazetta inspired model Amanda Achen @TheArtAche2.0 (instagram).
As always, if YOU have any suggestions of artists you would like to see an Artist Study of, please comment below or send me a DM.
Who are you favourite figurative artists right now?
