Usually, we think about gesture drawing as the practice of drawing the human figure. But of course we can extend this practice out to drawing all kinds of things. The process can be adapted to draw anything organic and sometimes even man made things.

Today we are focusing on how to apply our gesture drawing process to drawing our animal friends.

Mike Mattesi has a wonderful explanation in his book Force: Animal Drawing, where he explains the lines of action in terms of drawing a generic mammalian form, kind of like a sea lion:

Mike Mattesi, FORCE: Animal Drawing:

I’m currently in the middle of illustrating a non fiction picture book about the ocean and the many animals that live in it. I’m using my gesture process to help create movement and appeal in my sharks, squids, fish, sea lions, whales, etc.

Interesting, the video is quite complex. Might need to return to it. Speaking of using gesture techniques in drawing other subjects, I wanted to ask, is there a way to apply rhythms to portraits? Would be interesting to hear about landscapes as well since You've mentioned it :) Also since we are speaking about animals, here is an artist that draws them in a super flowy way, maybe someone will like him https://www.instagram.com/aveartz/fr-ca

Hi Kate, yes this video has a lot of layers, but just think about it the same way you think figures and keep it simple. Good question about the portrait...I think there are definitely rhythms, but in a different way. I will add this to the list of topics for later. Thanks for sharing the artist, his work is lovely!!!

I think you are right just need some time to chew on it. Glad that you liked the artist! And thanks a lot for answering all of our questions :)
