Wow, 80 dev diaries! That's nearly 81 dev diaries. Really makes you think.

This'll be a pretty short one (edit: it isn't), as the release this week has taken up a decent bit of time. I spent Monday finalizing some things ahead of public release, mostly the opportunity events system. I decided to make it so that you would really see these a lot in relation to starting conversations with people, especially if you favorite a lot of NPCs — making it essentially a complete alternative way of accessing the in-person dialogue system.

I'll want to continue to add more circumstances that invite you into a conversation with an NPC — seeing friends, partners, and so on. Ideally, they don't all just go to the main conversation menu, but instead invite you to start with a compliment, insult, or whatever is appropriate, like the option you may already have seen to ask a partner for a quickie.

Of course, conversations aren't all I want from the opportunity system, but rather just a baseline. The way the system is implemented, having these baseline opportunities won't lessen the odds of also getting the opportunities that lead to unique events, and I'll also want to gradually expand the selection of those as well.

On Tuesday, I worked on a bit of an experiment. A request I've seen from time to time, and more frequently lately, is a way to just increase the NPC count across the board. So... I decided to tinker with it.

In early versions of the game, this wouldn't have been possible... or, well, at least very inadvisable. I chose the original NPC count carefully, knowing that storage space for html games is at a premium, and therefore my save size had to remain fairly small. The limit for browser storage is generally 10mb or even just 5mb, and in Chrome, that limit is shared by all your local html games! In the prototyping stage of the game, I was creating different numbers of dummy NPCs and seeing the impact they had on save size, knowing that as the game grew, more variables would need to be stored and the save size would gradually grow. In this way I settled on... I think it was about 480 NPCs. Since then it's crept up to almost exactly 600.

I actually did a couple of tricks to help keep save size small. First of all, similar groups of NPCs (say, art students) will have many characteristics mostly in common — a shared archetype, if you will. Therefore you can turn a bunch of points of data (style, skills, likely inclinations, likes and dislikes) into a single point of data: the archetype.

Of course, every NPC of an archetype can't be exactly the same, so there needs to be random variation. The obvious thing is to generate each NPC, semi-randomize their characteristics, save the data so it can be referenced later, and move on. But saving all these individual data points eliminates the savings we got from archetypes, though they are still a good organizational tool.

So the second part of the solution is a seeded random. Given how computers generate random numbers, if you start from the same seed, then the same sequence of random-looking numbers will be produced every single time. You can take advantage of this to randomly create an NPC the same way each time by just using the same unique seed for the NPC. In this case, we just take their name and convert it into an integer. Using this seed, the NPC can be randomly generated over and over and will always come out the same.

So that's what we do! Each NPC in the game is saved as just a few key points of data (name, gender, archetype, and a few other things), but their more specific characteristics are only generated on demand — and since they're generated the same way every time, we don't actually need to save that data permanently. Lots of save file size savings!

Anyway, that tangent aside — even with all that, I figured the practical limit was about 500-600 NPCs. But then majou came along and helped alter the game to use the Sugarcube mod they created. This uses an alternate storage system that avoids the 5-10mb limit. The upshot is, if a player is using IndexedDB storage and their device can handle the extra overhead, there's no reason they can't have more NPCs in their game if they want. In the current dev build, the NPC count can be cranked up to around 2,000.

It'll take some more testing and experimentation, but I'm planning to have the NPC count multiplier slider available starting in the June update.

Public release happened on Wednesday, and with that came a few more bugs uncovered. More eyes on = more bugs found, that's always the way, but aside from a same-day fix to repair a broken link, it's been fairly smooth.

Besides bugfixing, I've been working on upgrading the gender and gender preference options. Gender preference has still mostly been using algorithms from the early versions of the game, where the concept was a much more simulationist and less customizable experience. The numbers of straight, bi, and queer characters have been mostly locked in, though you could give non-straight characters a bit of a boost.

This has been changed to be a fully proportional system, so that if you want, you can drag the Straight slider all the way down and the Bi slider all the way up and have almost all bi NPCs. I may still do more work on this — the Kinsey scale has been discussed — but even this one change will be a big improvement, I think. I'm also improving the results of unchecking the Traditional Sports Genders options, which instead of going for a weird 50/50 split of masc/enby and femme/enby NPCs, will now actually just use your gender distribution sliders, making the makeup of the teams more representative of your student body.

Wait, didn't I say this would be short? Sorry this turned out so text heavy! I hope you find it interesting. I've just been really deep into tinkering with code this week.

As a reminder, dev diaries will likely be spotty for the rest of this month as I'll be away from home, but I and the contributors will be working on things for the June update, which I expect to release on the usual timeline. I know it's been a little while since the last poll — what would you really like to see? The next items on the list are creating items (books, photos, etc.) and the quick sex system, but if you have other ideas, let me know!

Okay, I have rambled enough. I'll go back to getting elbow deep into code, and I hope you all have a good weekend! And as always, thank you for your support, it really does mean a lot!

Statistically Unlikely Games

I'm really excited for chatting to become an opportunity. Having to open the people menu to check who is around is kinda a pain, so I never do it. If they can wave at you first it will make the world feel more alive

moe egg lee

thank you and the volunteers for all your hard work for this month's release! I can't wait to see what else you guys have in store. I know personally that I'm super Invested in the storylines of core npcs, like the harraser, religious girl, parasocial stalker, etc, and can't wait to see more content for those be developed and added

I wonder if you'll expand the photo pictures, maybe allowing you to take a selfie with friends/colleagues, or showing off where you are location wise, with a pose and reaction to your selfie and can save ones you want to keep. In addition to this, for the aftersex scene, where you can kiss, massage or ask to go again, have an option where you or the person you had sex with to take a picture both together of an aftersex picture to capture/remember the moment, with them/you accepting or rejecting the idea and saving the picture as a "trophy" collection, like with the underwear trophy-taking system. Perhaps in addition you (if you have enough Exhibitionism/Disinhibition) or the other person can suggest to post the pic on Elkbook saying that you've both done it, with the comments reacting to it, with them/you accepting or rejecting the idea.

I appreciate the work on the gender preference options, it is something I had been meaning to ask about for a while. Happy to read it is on the works!

Wow, that's some clever behind the scenes engineering work. It reminds me of stories I've heard (and since forgotten) about tricks used in the pre-megabytes-of-RAM days.

Theyeti

The opening of BangCoffee shook a few ideas loose in my head... Chess Club - they often haunt coffee houses. The nerds need more clubs! Drama Club - another group that often frequents the coffee house scene. The actors can also be fond of poetry slams. Lots of opportunities for sexy times with the other drama kids. Douchebag with a Guitar - Could be an NPC, could be you! But we all had at least one of these guys (and it was ALWAYS a guy) at our college.

Gamercomander

I would like to throw an idea in the room. How about creating a hermaphrodite (gender) charakter customization option.

Ursula Rising

I was thinking that having both sets of genitals would be nice since that’s now an option for non-binary bottom surgery IRL

Ursula Rising

While I know the pregnancy system is in its infancy (hah) it does bother me that I can tell NPCs I’ve had a vasectomy but can’t actually be honest when I say that. Would be nice to add that option in early just to keep PCs from having to lie when saying that

indigo + lou

I would love the addition of working chastity belts/cages! I would also love the ability to edge your partner/be edged by them.

Jtzquyiwq

As a boobs guy, it feels spoiled to ask for anything else. But I’d love it if your nipples could get extra big, swollen and sore when they get sucked over and over at the river rat or elsewhere. Also if people could bite or twist your nipples, breast bondage, or if people could objectify you based on that more it’d be great

Taylor Hopkins

Once again asking you to shadow drop pregnancy. I don't care if you don't even go full on with it through birth, I just want the ability for females to get pregnant to be in the game.

Ursula Rising

I may have lost track of time and forgotten that I haven’t checked in like two or three builds 😅

SeekAndFind

Haven't played in a little while so downloaded the most recent build to find that several characters were de-aged? Many NPC's in their fifties are now in their forties and one of the professors in their forties is in his thirties?

courseoftemptation

The change to a bell curve algorithm probably changed some NPC appearances. You can re-customize them if it bothers you (just make sure the option is turned on, then you can do it from the View Person dialog). Changes to the NPC generation algorithm are rare so updates usually won't affect this.

There is a new bug when you are doing the "buy the candy bar" dare. The message "You have a dare to do here, but you should probably clean up first" appears regardless of whether you are clean or not.

lost_falchion

Just a very small request, but next update can you add fairy and angel options to pick to have as your v-tuber avatar? (If anyone else has other suggestions, feel free to reply under this comment!)

I happened to look at your roadmap, and it seems you are planning to add crime content later on. If that is the case, might you perhaps have plans to add gangs to the town? In reality, there are sometimes students who sell drugs on campus. And they get those drugs supplied by gangs. These gangs often initially approach students favorably, providing drugs as samples. Then, once the student becomes addicted, they make the student sell drugs on campus. Just like real-life gangs, once you get involved with them, it's nearly impossible to escape. If the PC sells their drugs on campus and later realizes her mistake and tries to resist their demands to correct her wrong, they would likely not hesitate to use threats and violence to break the PC's will. They might even have prepared means to threaten the PC in advance, in case the PC resists them. For example, if the PC is female, they might film a sex video of the PC while she is under the influence of drugs and keep it, then use this as her weakness later if the PC tries to stand against them. Currently, the only maps are the campus and Riverside town. Do you have plans to add additional maps later on? If so, I think places like a red-light district or slums would be suitable locations for gangs.

Dunan Rayne

I am so thankful to you that you have made the NPC customization possible in such detail. However, could you perhaps make it possible for the user to customize NPCs' tastes or preferred locations and date types? For example, whether NPCs prefer muscular partners, or partners with big breasts, or prefer blonde hair, or prefer casual fashion... things like that. Also, currently, when the PC becomes close with each NPC, the user can learn the places they frequent at specific times. Some NPCs are at the bar in the evening, some exercise at the Gym. It would be great if you could also allow these things to be customizable.

Dunan Rayne

I still hope that NPCs could own cars. It would be great if those cars were used in dates with NPCs, since driving without a set destination is one of the traditional date types. If vehicles are really added to CoT someday in the future, gangs could have cars too, right? If so, what kind of cars would the gangs ride in? I imagine gangs driving around town or campus in old vans. Isn't it very threatening and interesting? Other vehicles are fine too, but I prefer vans. That's because the interior of a van is very spacious. They are spacious enough for the PC and three or four gang members to do various things inside while the van is in motion. For example, how about something like this? Three or four gang members would drive around in an old van, but one with the gang's logo etched on it, intimidating residents and students. Loud gangster music would blare from the car. They would drive slowly, looking out the window with threatening eyes, as if scouting for prey. Then, if they spot a student who sells their drugs or who has become their plaything, they'd stop the car, call them over, and order them to get in the van. If the PC is already involved with them, they might even come to the campus parking lot to pick her up right after her class ends. Three or four gang members who have parked the van in the parking lot loiter around the parking lot or Mall, scaring students. Then, if they find the PC, they would call out the PC's name loudly. The PC would be very embarrassed, fearing the gazes of other students. Because she wants to escape that situation as quickly as possible, she quickly gets into the van as they demanded and leaves the campus with the gang. The van then proceeds straight to the gang's hideout, and during that time inside the van, the PC might have to have intimate time with three or four gang members. Besides that, a scene where the PC goes to town for shopping or a date and happens to run into a gang driving by in a van and gets into the van according to their demands also seems interesting.

Thanks! Will be fixed in the next update (before the weekend probably)

If its possible, add an monolid-eye shape to the options in the character creator

Not sure how difficult this would be, but it would be cool if clothing actually got dirty over time, either by events (splashed by a bike or spilled on at work) or just slowly over time to prompt more laundry use. It could prompt more clothing changing if you don't have time to wash them, or even doing without. It could cause the hygiene status to decrease faster if you don't. It would probably have to involve changing laundry to only wash what is dirty instead of everything unworn though.

I have a question. Even after assigning male NPCs "Breeding Kink" or "Risktaker" traits, some of them still consistently insist on using condoms during sex scenes. This happens even when the PC explicitly asks them not to, and they refuse her request, determined to use a condom. I'm wondering if there's another condition or game system at play that might be overriding these traits and influencing condom usage decisions. And I truly hope that if the PC tells male NPCs she's on daily pills or has a implant (or even if they figure it out themselves—perhaps by rummaging through her clothes while she's showering, or hearing it from another NPC with a Bragger trait she's been with), they would remember it and completely stop using condoms in future sex scenes. It can feel a bit like they have amnesia when they repeatedly try to use a condom, even after the PC has told them she's on birth control in previous scenes. Additionally, what if the PC and NPC could discuss condoms during a Pillow Talk scene? Wouldn't NPCs with "Breeding Kink" or "Risktaker" traits be thrilled to get unlimited free access to cum inside? Furthermore, I'd like to see a negative reaction from NPCs who already know the PC is on daily pills or has an implant and have been freely enjoying cumming inside, if the PC suddenly asks them to use a condom again. Perhaps they could say something like, "But you're on birth control, aren't you? Just take your pill again." Some jerkier NPCs could even irresponsibly suggest she take the morning-after pill after cumming inside, even if she claims she's stopped taking her birth control.

Dunan Rayne

Oh, just one more thing. It seems only the PC can request a second round after sex. Is it possible for NPCs to ask the PC for a second round as well?

Alkpaz

The only suggestion I have is showing you purchased the same clothing prior. If I want to "collect clothing" it is hard to do when I don't recall what I purchased. The sex toys show that you purchased them but not the clothing in either the internet or in the stores. Awesome game BTW. Once it can get possible mutations like "Accidental Woman" ( https://www.patreon.com/c/thaumx/posts ) and maybe a milk farm or something then it will be AIO and won't have to switch :D
