VERY IMPORTANT GUIDE! About how to play the map strategically and efficiently. The map is a battlefield and you have limited resources that you have to use efficiently! I explain how to play efficiently by trading resources well and what making space actually is!

Thanks Fan, amazing guides👏🏻

Thanks, Fan, Have you thought about making guides for areas in ranked (bronze, silver, gold, etc) and what to do on specific roles to increase the odds of winning? I just figured I'd ask because I'm having issues climbing as a tank. Your guides have helped, but people tend to make my journey harder than it should be. (currently silver 1 NA/Bronze 3 EU).

Hey Fan, as always, a really helpful guide :) Would you consider doing one for awareness? I struggle a lot with this, I dont know if It's because I dont know what to look for, If It's just a matter of a lack of focus and concentration. Even if It's a small one, would beinteresting to have some insights from a pro player in this, I'm sure you also went through this problem at some point in time. Love your vids and lessons <3

fanhots

I could try to make some generalized tips but usually I find what you should do to climb doesn't change too much no matter what rank you are in, the proper way to play the game (good soaking, camps, and getting ahead of the enemies enough to do both and still be able to help your team at the fight) is usually the best bet no matter the rank.

Great vid, interesting how you can trade your death for enough advantages. In RTS, you can mitigate having a smaller army by baiting/forcing the opponent into being inefficient with their army.

fanhots

Exactly, this concept is more obvious in RTS than in MOBA I think. People are VERY inefficient in MOBAs even at the GM level, they just tend to never think about it that way.

Great video. Reminded me years ago when pushing bot alone with Sylvanas on Sky temple I'd tell people to just not die at temples. Even after everyone died at temples and we'd lose both, we'd be ahead for having fully taken bot fort. I'd like to ask for a similar video for late game tfs. How to go about thinking on the best trade you can make for the team to win, even by dying, For instance, who to target with cc as tank, or who to heal and save as healer. Many games I play seem to boil down to one last TF that closes the match, in spite of any proper macro done earlier.

fanhots

Will keep that in mind. This is something that is game dependent and not always the same though, usually requires some replay review and thought of the variables in your game. Sometimes it can be better to focus healer, other times a 1v9 DPS, and other times simply someone who happens to be out of position no matter what role they are.

Efficiency is something I live and breathe in my everyday life but until you opened my eyes I couldn't see how to properly apply it to hots. I still struggle to make those decisions or even see them in real time mid game. I guess I'm more of a slow thinker. Practicing to make it muscle memory is the only way I guess. Thought I had it down when I started the season with an 80% win rate which I'd never done since beta. But then I went on a massive lose streak that brought me back to 50% in what felt like unwinnable games against stacked teams even though I was applying all the same things I had before. I even tried to keep my spirits up the whole time and encourage my team. I'm sure I was subconsciously tilted a bit but I still thought with all my new knowledge, I'd be able to win at least 50% of my games ... nope, not even close. Back on the climb again but hoping I can avoid insane backlash like that this time as it's pretty demoralizing.

I'm about to start asking myself, Is what I'm doing the same as being AFK? Because if they accomplish the same thing, I'm not doing the right thing.

I love this guide, super helpful! There is another topic on the 'obscure' side of things like this one, I'd be happy to see you tackle it in the future perhaps. This topic concerns the mechanic of ' committing to a fight'. I feel like some heroes are more commitment-oriented than others, and so they wouldn't fit well in a comp where the idea is 4v5ing a lot because someone is making space/stomping in solo lane most of the time. I guess this is an extension of kiting, only done as a team rather than a single hero micro-ing correctly. Hopefully what I'm trying to say makes sense.

lyukduke

I know that feeling mate! But in the long run, if you keep at it, you slowly rise! gl!

Great video, I actually was able to implement some of this thought process into my games last night to good effect. I think a struggle a lot of lower tier players (silv-plat) have is we just dont understand the value of each thing that we do. Like for example, whats one wave worth? How valuable is a wall and towers, how valuable is a fort, a kill, camps, 2 waves, etc. Im sure some of the answers are game and level dependent. But Ive been playing for years and I still dont feel like a have a good grasp of these things. I have some feel just based on experience, but if you asked me to tell you, Id really have no clue. I think time kinda factors into that as well. We dont quite understand how much value can be lost in ten seconds.

fanhots

Absolutely, I have another guide on here that addresses some of your questions that you weren't sure about, its called the Comprehensive Experience Guide, check that out if you haven't yet!

fanhots

Of course, you would not want to be 4v5ing with melee heroes that have to commit super hard such as Illidan. Much better to be 4v5 poking with ranged heroes and tanky heroes that wont die when outnumbered like liming or johanna.

fanhots

I go on those lose streaks from time to time as well, no matter how good you are, it can always happen. Just have to try to stay untilted or take a break if you are and go back in later and keep all the knowledge in your head.

PlayerHeroes1

Very nice vid! I was wondering if for example you have a stacking hero in your team, often he would always want to fight to get stacks, so how should you decide then? as you say in your comprehensive experience guide Exp is usually the right way to go, but maybe there are some situations where stacks are worth more than exp especially when someone in your team always wants to fight?

fanhots

Stacks are usually pretty low priority, I would never prioritize those above soak or camps or anything else useful if I am trying to win, you can still do everything and then fight after for stacks which is usually optimal. But if someone on your team is just running in it can sometimes be better to follow them even if it is not optimal.

HN

Crazy thing is that this video & the priority video applies to real life too. Probably why I love MOBAs so much.

fanhots

Yep, it boils down to efficiency and efficiency is a concept that is very important everywhere in life.

Marine One-sixteen

Ok now I understand. I used to do things like that only with Samuro, not only because my tf presence matters so little, but also because I'm so scared of dying in this game I don't know why, and pushing with camp and a catapult wouldn't be punished probably. Ty Fan!

Alekzander S

love this kind of stuff fan! appreciate the amazing guides!

Little Suruk

i find that even sometime the team made bad decision (like go help your rat Raynor), it better to join the team rather than split off doing the right thing alone. What your opinion on this?

fanhots

Yes I agree, it is often better to have more people do the wrong thing than less people do the right thing. If the option for everyone to do the right thing isn't there, then that is fine.

Lucas Andersson

Regarding Falstad joining the losing 3v3 at 15:00, if he didn't (and someone died) there would be a risk that your team would be tilted and go afk or troll for the rest of the game because you didn't try to help even though it might have been the right move to attack immortal instead. Just thinking maybe that's why he joined the fight.

fanhots

Yes this is a thing that is prevalent especially in lower ranks. In higher ranks though, Diamond+ where I believe this game was people usually understand enough to not just ping solo laner blindly so it should happen far less, but still happens now and then.

RC

What are the things one should be considering in situations where you have 1 to 2 players on the team who are vastly under performing relative to the enemy team, and you know that you pretty much can't win a teamfight whatsoever, but your teammates still want to aram and feed? Or, perhaps you're just up against a comp that your team doesn't know how to deal with (e.g. aba illidan, medivh). Let's say you're on ranged DPS or tank - at that point going off to soak or split pushing structures feel pretty futile, especially since these types of heroes don't soak or do structure damage well. Do you just rely on changing teamfight tactics (e.g. know who to target)? Personally I find in these situations the only sliver of hope is try to wait for the enemy team to make a mistake (e.g. out of position or 1 enemy teammate is split soaking alone somewhere), get a pick, and try to stagger deaths. But if the enemy team is staying grouped or getting picks themselves, it feels pretty hopeless. Are there any strats to deal with these situations earlier in the game, before you fall too behind? I find that when you're doing your B2GM climbs, you often tend to salvage these situations very well and not fall into a hole you can't climb out of.

fanhots

Not every game is meant to be won, there's a common saying in MOBAS about a 30-40-30 rule where 30% of your games are lost no matter what you do, 30% are won no matter what you do, and only the last 40% of the games will your efforts sway the outcome of the game. If your team is really that bad and you cannot split push or do any other useful things with your hero, then thats just a game that you shouldn't expect to win. Theres a few ways to salvage the situations you speak of. With Illidan aba/medivh specifically the best way is probably through draft. I often ban aba and also often last pick counterpick so if I see an illidan or aba pick I can pick something where I think I have the upper hand like Arthas. Same with medivh I often counterpick it with something like junkrat where I can always boop their portals to counter. Other then that it is mostly just playing the game well. There is a million ways to play well but 1 example could be if Im solo lane vs Illidan aba. That combo is a monster later on in the game but early game tends to be weaker. If Im on solo laner and I can pick something that soaks faster and I'm smart enough to avoid heavily trading into them and I just clear minions and rotate before them, I'm basically 1v2 but still getting more priority, giving the rest of the map 4v3 advantage and if I can swing into a teamfight maybe level 7 v 6 right before the enemy team gets 7 and get a few kills, that can completely change the course of the entire game. Compare this to someone who might not pick a faster soaker, or someone who trades heavily into illidan aba instead of minion clearing and loses all their life and is now behind on rotate, and now is slower to get lvl 7 and the illidan aba now gets to the teamfight first with more HP and wipes my whole team, these two games will be completely different based on a single players decisions.
