Ugh. I'm almost mad at Peyton. I don't wanna be, but it's pretty shitty to ignore Brooke who is literally heartbroken because the heartbreak is your fault.

That said, I'm happy Lucas broke up with Brooke. We're paving the way for my ship! But it only lasted about 10 minutes. Sigh.

Also, why the hell would Nathan choose to live with Dan? That's completely insane! You know exactly how this is gonna turn out!

(1) I feel so bad for Brooke. She's just a 16 year old girl who loves a boy who doesn't deserve her love. She doesn't deserve to be used by Lucas to shield his heart from Peyton and she doesn't deserve to be ignored by her best friend. And that's just the tip of the betrayal iceberg. I get that Lucas loves Peyton and that is all well and good. But just cause you love someone doesn't mean you can use people, cheat on people, and all around treat them like trash. Lucas is treating Brooke so badly. He didn't have to start a relationship with her. He knew he was in love with Peyton and yet knowing that he decided to get in a relationship with her best friend. It's so shitty! (2) Nathan is in such a difficult position. He knows his father is a horrible person and he certainly would rather live with his mother. But he's trying to protect his mom. He knows that if he goes to live with her then Dan will make her life more hell than he would otherwise.

I was so pro-Brooke at this point in the show. To be fair, I was never fond of Peyton. I didn't hate her or anything, she just rubbed me the wrong way in early S1 and then she turned out to be a pretty shit best friend with the whole cheating thing. The show really rubbed salt in that wound too by showing just how caring Brooke is like you said she came off as overbearing but only cause we knew Lucas was cheating on her and didn't want to be with her. If it had been Nathan who almost died and Haley was the one who sat by his hospital bed and bonded with his mom and rearranged his furniture to promote healing, it'd be endearing rather than overbearing. And then we find out too, that it's not just lovesick teen overbearing cringe. Showing up for people and checking in on them and being too involved is how Brooke shows she cares and you realize that when Peyton mentions that that was how Brooke was when her mom died but it's also what Brooke does with Peyton now. She's constantly asking her if she's okay, reassuring her that they're best friends and nothing can break that, trying to get Peyton out of her head and doing something fun and stupid like a "normal" teenager and while I'm not the biggest fan of that side of Brooke, it's pretty much only her standing by Peyton. Like her mom's dead, her dad leaves her in this big house alone all the time, Peyton's too moody and broody (and a little snobby if we're being brutally honest) to be real friends with the other girls at school- referring to the cheerleaders. Petyon doesn't have to be friends with them though if that's not who she clicks with but she also makes no effort to find friends outside the popular group. Brooke invites herself over to Peyton's house and checks in on her, she includes her in social activities and keeps her from being a pariah in the world that is mean high school bullies, and she provides her with positive affection and attention that no one else regularly gives her. And then, on the other hand, it kinda seems like Peyton doesn't really give much to the friendship. She just kinda takes for granted that Brooke will keep showing up and inserting herself so that way Peyton doesn't have to make the effort herself. All that said though, it's not like Brooke's the best friend in the entire world. She gets too wrapped up in her teen drama and misses stuff like Peyton's mom's death anniversary. She doesn't always know the best way to make Peyton feel better and sometimes she doesn't know when to be serious. She's not perfect but she is the one showing up and trying and Peyton repays that by having an affair with her boyfriend. Hard for me to be pro-Peyton when the show took that route with Brooke's character. I think as far as Nathan, it's a mix of everything. I think he's protecting his mom because she's been very clear that she wants to keep her secrets and Dan made it very clear that if he doesn't go live with him, Deb can't keep those secrets and he'll actually use them against her and make them public and drag her name through the mud. I also think though that he's just frustrated with the fighting and figures that if he gives Dan what he wants, it'll be the least amount of drama and fighting. Then like you said, Dan is the devil he knows. Deb might be home now and fighting for Nathan but she's been absent a long time and Nathan's been basically living alone with Dan anyway. What's the difference between doing it at home and doing it at the beach house?

i think a big thing the show does wrong is how brooke gets thrown under the bus in favor of peyton and lucas. from the get-go the writers wanted it to be peyton and lucas, but i don't know why they had to throw brooke into the mix. i know it's for the *drama* but still. brooke is so sweet and so kind. her biggest insecurity is not being good enough and not being loved. she feels she has to prove herself worthy of being loved through over the top actions. she's always been like this. think back to when she messed things up with haley and nathan and her big scavenger hunt she did with them. she always goes over the top to try to fix things or show she's worthy and good. it makes me feel so sad for her. it's a painful part of the show to watch. as much as i love peyton and lucas, it felt like the show tries so hard to make the audience root for them and paint brooke out to be annoying but is brooke really in the wrong? her biggest insecurity in this relationship is that she's not like peyton, doesn't have the same interests as peyton, and that lucas might not like a girl like her. and her worst fears are actually true. i don't know why lucas persued her knowing he was still crazy for peyton. i don't think that was fair to brooke at all. and the worst is she's asked him several times if she's good enough, if he really wants to be with her, etc. and he keeps reassuring her and giving her false hope. at this point it goes beyond cheating. there's an extra layer of sinister there when you take into consideration they're exploiting her biggest insecurity and fear. peyton knows brooke better than anyone. she knows she doesn't have family that loves or cares for her. it just makes the whole thing feel so sick and wrong to me. i'm not saying peyton and lucas could never be together. but i think they went about treating brooke the completely wrong way. lucas needed to be up front with her and tell her he shouldn't be in a relationship with her. he should never have kept reassuring her. and peyton needed to be up front too. brooke isn't dumb. she picked up on a lot of things and kept digging and trying to get peyton to admit it to her. her asking over and over again if things were good, if it was okay for her to be with lucas, was her trying to get peyton to say it herself. if there was a problem, she wanted peyton to tell her to her face. peyton didn't. the show tries to paint brooke as the "bad guy" or the "annoying one standing in the way of lucas and peyton" but i just can't get on board with viewing her that way. if anything, my heart just breaks for her.

now onto nathan lol this poor kid. i can't even imagine being put into this position. he think he's protecting his mother. he's been with dan on his own long enough to know how dan is and how to navigate him. he can *tolerate* dan, while i think he understands that if his dad goes after his mom this way, dan'll do more damage and cause more pain than just what's *tolerable* if that makes sense. nathan can navigate and side step and just put up with it a certain extent, in his mind; but his mom's reputation and emotional and mental state could be in danger and so he's weighing out the cost/benefits here. he can tolerate dan and his bullshit for the sake of his mother. and i think that's what it mostly is, is bullshit. nathan sees past it. dan may have been physically abusive in the past at times, but i don't think he is today. i think he's mostly bluster and blunder and i think nathan is in a healthier mindset and a stronger mindset where he thinks he can just kind of roll his eyes and let his dad's nonsense go in one ear and out the other in favor of keeping his mom protected. or at leas that's what i think he's thinking here. it just breaks my heart that he's even having to think like this and weight the cost/benefits. like sacrifice himself to keep his mom safe. no kid should have that put on their shoulders or have to think through these kinds of decisions. he's one of my "i just wanna give him a hug and fix him a cup of cocoa" fictional characters, up there with shawn hunter and chris chambers lol

No I feel so bad for Brooke here. She is so into Lucas and just trying to be a good girlfriend. Lucas is being a jerk treating her like that and he/Peyton are in the wrong, though I still blame lucas more. Brooke didn't go "overboard" in my opinion. She was making an effort to show how much she cares about him.

Yeah I agree. Brooke likes romantic gestures and is trying to do that for Lucas, which is really sweet.

Haley in her singing era. ❤️ I love that she is branching out. She has one of my fav arcs on the show.

Nathan has issues with both of his parents. Nathan just isn't close to his mom, which is her doing. He was so uncomfortable when she covered his hand and when she said she loved him he was like "yeah you too." 😬 Sure Deb is trying to do better now, but the damage with Nathan is already done. You can't just erase 16 years. She left him with his dad. He blames them both. Nathan holds onto his anger, holds grudges and does not forgive easily. Nathan is just accepting his fate and the fact that Dan will do wtv it takes to win. His mom has never fought for him. He probably sees his mom is trying and he wants that mom, but at the end of the day you can just tell that he's done with both of them. They always disappoint him. I don't see him trying to protect her. She didn't protect him. Nathan is like that rn. He's lacks perspective and has a lot of anger towards them.

I am so glad that I’m not the only one who finds Lucas and Peyton in the wrong because idc what anyone says but what he did and continues to do to Brooke is so beyond wrong

Now when I rewatch this storyline, it is impossible for me to choose a team because they all made mistakes and it is fair that in the end that they all ended up alone. Brooke put herself in the middle of this messy situation involving Peyton and Lucas. She knew very well that something was going on between these two. She even knew what Lucas told Peyton in the room in 1x07 but for some reasons she didn't care.... x) And the fact that she pursued Lucas despite knowing Peyton's feelings for him is very questionable. Peyton didn't make things easier. Her mistake was not to be honest about her feelings and she misled everyone including Lucas while trying to figure things out. But I can't blame her too much for being afraid. We know her issues. And the situation became too tricky with Brooke in the picture. The same way I can't completely blame Lucas for being afraid too. He had every right to start dating Brooke. She wanted him and Peyton didn't. He even seemed happy with Brooke but Peyton interfered when she told him how she really felt about him. I didn't expect Lucas to trust Peyton or to make up his mind easily after what happened in 1x07 and how she hurt him. His mistake was to continue this relationship with Brooke while things were not crystal clear in his head... but he genuinely liked her and he never planned to cheat on her or to hurt her. They would have broken up eventually. The cheating part is wrong and Brooke is 100% right to be mad at them but it is also true that they didn't plan it or that they were not proud of it at all. And it lasted 2 days I think... I also don't mind Lucas for pushing Peyton to be honest once and for all. She was blowing hot and cold. They had to clarify their situation. Once they were on the same page, they quickly decided to tell Brooke... it sucks for her but it was the right thing to do at this stage and they kind of tried to protect her... but life got in the way... and we know the rest.
